Codex of the Infinite Planes

Volume 5: Border Elemental Planes

The secrets of the four Border Elemental Planes ... ripped apart at last!

The mythical Codex of the Infinite Planes is a massive book containing information on the very planes of existence. Too many for one document to tackle, so it's been divided up into volumes covering individual planes. Crack open the codex in this continuing volume and learn about the four intersections between the Inner Planes - the Border Elemental Planes of Ash, Ice, Magma, and Ooze!

Inside this volume you'll find the following information ...

* An overview of the Planes of Ash, Ice, Magma, and Ooze, including ways to get there, how to survive, how to get around, and what to avoid

* A look at the powerful entities on the four planes, including the Slime Lords, the Mephit Monarchs, and Fimbulvinter the White Doom!

* 13 new monsters, including the belker, dripping crawler, elder thing, border elementals (ash, ice, magma, and ooze), frost salamander, lava shark, mud serpent, ragewraith, swarm of ash rats, and swarm of frostmites!

* Hazards to avoid across the four Border Elemental Planes, such as chokeclouds on the Plane of Ash, deep freezes on the Plane of Ice, magmafalls on the Plane of Magma, and insect swarms on the Plane of Ooze!

* 12 interesting sites and treasures to be found across the Border Elemental Planes, such as the Battlefields of Smoke, Bog of the Dead, City of the Elder Things, Throne of Blazeheart, Lost Mire, Slime Lord Tombs, and Tundra Pits!

* Adventure hooks for all tiers of play!

* Random encounter tables for the Planes of Ash, Ice, Magma, and Ooze!

* Three new player options - the Oath of Clarity for paladins, the Ooze Magic origin for sorcerers, and the River of Rage patron for warlocks!

UPDATED 12/4/2019 - A new wizard subclass (Cryomancy), new backgrounds, and 12 new cold-themed spells for the cryomancer to play around with!

The Codex of the Infinite Planes awaits ... will you risk opening it?

I noticed under backgrounds it is missing the trinket/treasure scavengers of the Plane of Ooze.

Is there a way to maybe buy all five elemental codexs for a discounted price?

I need to bundle them up into a single product, but it IS something I'm planning on doing as I complete each "set" (Inner Planes, Echo & Transitive Planes, Upper Outer Planes, Middle Outer Planes, Lower Outer Planes). With the Inner Planes set now done I've been working on getting a bundle together that's more than just the five docs crammed together. Probably will get that out after Astral Plane, which should get released next week!

I'm curious why only Cyronax is mentioned (and even there as a myth) vs the other previous rulers of these planes. It seems like less went into establishing rulers/persons of power in this volume versus the other ones you did for the Inner Planes--was that intentional?

Honestly, it was intentional. I liked the idea of the Border Elemental Planes being realms of relative instability, regions where true dominance had yet to be established by mature elemental forces. And, it's interesting that Cryonax is the only paraelemental lord referenced in older books - why was there no ooze or magma lords? Who knows? I think there's an interesting space there to set an adventure series, where one dominant elemental power rises to claim ownership. Is it a good one? Or a bad one? How does it interact with the rest of the planes? What are its ultimate goals? My instinct is to make them a villain, but perhaps it would be more interesting as a force of good trying to establish its own realm.

Those were some of my thoughts for this one. I hope this helps, thanks!

There actually were lords for ooze (Bwimb), magma (Chlimbia), and ash (Ehkahk)--they are cited in a couple of books and can be found online--I didn't realise you were unaware of them. While I understand the principal of leaving space, I would have rather seen them or something like them included--I have all the creative space I need without this product, so (to me) the point of a book like this is to offer creative suggestions. As such, I found this a weaker entry compared to the others you've put out.

Thank you, I appreciate the feedback! I hope there's enough other material in the volume to spark some ideas. As a designer I'm happy to move on from the Inner Planes as well - Astral Plane, Ethereal Plane, and the echo planes (Faerie, Shadow, and Dream) are my next codex entries and I've very excited about all of those.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
