The Tinker’s Toolkit Race Design

ADD TO WISHLIST >

This is an analysis of 5th edition D&D’s underlying mathematics and system for referees to create new races and feats for their campaign settings. There are 37 new races in short form including minotaurs, centaurs, and pixies. This book benefits from three years of playtesting and development. Hundreds of hours of mathematical analysis of evidence from the Players’ Handbook, Dungeon Masters’ Guide, Elemental Evil Player’s Companion, Volo’s Guide to Monsters, and the Tortle Package has determined how canon races are built enabling you to build quality new races for your players. There is also an optional section that contains rules that are NOT part of the reversed engineered system. Rules from the PHB and DMG are applied in new ways to open up a greater diversity of PC races.

Picked this one up a little while back and have been using it to make adjustments to other 5e based products and my own homebuilds. Excellent stuff, and I'll be happy to pay for it again if we can get an updated version that has him work his magic on additional PC species from Eberron, Dark Sun and the like. Maybe in a sequel?

Only real complaint is I wish the tables were formatted a little easier to read. That is the only negative I can mention, everything else is well written and analyzed, and presented in a format that's easy to use.

Valuable stuff for the 5e GM. Highly Recommended.

This is one of my favorite products for 5e.

Is there any chance of an update or follow up to this book that might tackle some of the newly published materials that have come out since its initial release?

Thank you!

I’m very close to releasing an update, have been in fact for several months (I’m lucky enough to still have a day job). However, even this won’t include a lot of the evidence from the new books (again the day job). Will get to it eventually...

Hello again. After deciding to improve the layout and presentation and add a bit more material the second edition took longer than expected. You can now find it here: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/420200/Race-Design-for-DD-5TH-Edition-Creating-New-PC-Species?

Karl, I spoke with you on the Dungeons & Dragons 5e Facebook page a few months ago. So far I am enjoying the supplement and soon will guide some of my players through some of the items. I wanted to be able to share some of that with you but I lost track of you on that group. Here is mine https://www.facebook.com/quintin.steeves

How similar is this to Savage Species? I'm looking for something like Savage Species that would allow a Monstrous PC to eventually reach its full stat block potential from the Monster Manual rather than being permanently nerfed as a monster. For example, reaching Level 20 in any given Class but still not having access to the original monster Race's Resistances, Immunities, Natural Attacks, etc. Thanks in advance.

Using this book monster races can almost always be created with all of their racial traits. Sometimes the trait is delayed to higher levels. In the third part of the book I go beyond the reverse engineered race design system and use existing rules in new ways to allow a greater variety of PCs. Purists can just use the 2nd part and be bound by the limits WOTC currently has in place.
For the rest of us part 3 contains a Level Adjustment (LA) option but read it carefully, it does not work exactly like the one in Savage Species. You can use the book to build your own LA races. Many of the example races given in short form use this system. these include young metallic dragons, a selection of giants, minotaurs, and others.
I do not provide rules for race-classes because my mathematical analysis did not include unpicking the nitty gritty of how classes are built.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
