Subrace Handbook (Over 40 New Subraces)

Suggested Price $7.50

Version 0.5 contains the new yuan-ti subraces, a few balance revisions and many text fixes. In some cases the previous version was making a section of text unreadable. This has been corrected in the latest version. If you were having trouble with a previous version, please try downloading again.

Revisiting favorites from previous editions, this handbook is designed to give you and your players more options when it comes to character creation and advancement.
There are more than 40 subraces, 20 variants, and racial feats in this companion book. The subraces and revisions are designed to be about as powerful as a half-elf, elf, or dwarf.

Subraces and variants for Dwarf, Genasi, Gnome, Goblin, Goliath, Halfling, Hobgoblin, Kenku, Kobold, Lizardfolk, Orc, Dragonborn, Firbolg, Human, Grung, Tiefling, and Yuan-ti.

This document is intended to be updated over time. The current version is 0.50

Can you please make a Fantasy Grounds version of this module?
Customer avatar
Brian I April 02, 2018 6:36 pm UTC
It will be a lot of work to port my works over to Fantasy Grounds, as it's a manual replacement process for the data for some reason.
It's not a priority, but I can get it done eventually if there's more folks who'd like a FG version.

would yakara (yak men from Al-Qadim) be considered a variant on a minotaur

The wording in some of the features confuses me a bit. By "bloodied" as in the Bloodbear subrace for Firbolgs and the Brightnose Hobogoblin, does this refer to a creature below its HP Maximum as I can't recall any other official wording that refers to being "bloodied" except from other editions.

That's interesting. I hadn't realized it wasn't a "technical term" anymore. It means the creature's hit points are equal to or less than one-half the creature's maximum hit points, rounded down.
I tend to think of bloodied as part of the lingo of general D&D play, but I may revise the wording in a later revision. Thanks for pointing that out.

Good stuff, you actually made the Yuan-Ti playable

In the Dragon-wrought kobold section, the Hardened Scales ability: "armor, your Armor Class equals 7 + your Dexterity modifier + your Constitution modifier." Is that supposed to say 10 like the Barbarian, or is it intentionally 7?

Brian I February 11, 2018 1:16 am UTC
It's 7 intentionally.

You asked about overpowered and underpowered Feats, I'll leave a list
-Ascending Claws (OP Feat for an OP class)
-Renewed Breath (On a lucky spree that's a free nuke every turn)
-Master of the Forge (Crazy in 5e where +1 items are a big deal)
-One with the Elements (Not too bad, but pretty op)
-Scrapyard Mayhem (Free vehicles whenever you want for the setback of a little gold and some garbage? Might need to up the cost)
-Worg Whisperer (WOW this one is powerful)
-Oversized Grip (It's a very good Feat for the small races)
-Giantkin Blood (That's on the levels of a Legendary item effect just for taking a Feat)
-Gnomish Transformation (This one actually feels underpowered. If they can't see, how do they ever know when is a good time to come out?)
-Tree Hopper (Basically you're never catching the Gnome with this Feat)
-Fury From Beyond (Orc/Half-Orc already have an effect similar to this. It seem weird they can't be healed, and it'd be op if they could....See more

Thanks for the detailed response. I'll be editing several of these feats based on your comments and other's responses for the upcoming 0.4 update. Look out for it in the next few days.

Have you checked the latest 0.39 document? The text looks clear on the goblin and feat pages to me now.

I just redownloaded the only version available right now. The section on the Mountain Goblin (page 9) is still blurry. I'd be glad to go into more detail on these if you wanted

I went overboard on the clarity edits on the goblin pages for 0.4. it should be readable now, if a little dark. This is intended as a temporary fix until I figure out exactly what made the text screwy.
If you could look at the newest revisions of the feats, I find advice from others is valuable for figuring out what needs fixing.

Renewed Breath- Let it only go on recharge if it works. Like it can only be SUCCESSFULLY used once per l/s rest.
Scrapyard Mayhem- 100g still seems REALLY cheap for something like a flying vehicle
Worg Whisperer- I think this one is still broken. Just the fact that you get a free flying mount.
Oversized Grip- It's still really overpowered that with this a human could grapple an adult dragon. Maybe lower the size by 1
Giantkin Blood- Still way too broken.
Fury From Beyond- I'd let them be stabilized. It can only be used once per long rest, so it wouldn't be broken
Commander's Shout- Still seems very weak. I'd make it a Bonus Action
Airborn Ambition- Still makes no sense to me
Piecing horns- Still very strong. Minotaur horns don't even do that much

The rest were fixed beautifully

So I was wrong, Minotaur horns do 1d10 damage. So that feat is fine. Sorry about that

Lizardfolk Subraces would be awesome. There are some in Return of the Lizard King which are really cool.

Perhaps in a later revision, the races that are not featured will appear.

Thanks for reading

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
