"To say I'm a fan of what MT Black writes and motivates in others would be an understatement, as would simply saying 'He's done it again!' I can speak from experience when I say that working closely with a ton of designers, on a project with no upfront payment, is a daunting task. Yet, the Player's Companion is a superb achievement in page count alone, never mind the ingenuity of many of the features, spells, and equipment. Finally, his crew of designers (which rallies a list of names you should already know) use Chapter 7: Better Gaming to address something we all talk about at length but few ink succinctly and with such vigor. The product gets 5-stars from me and... MT, as always, you continue to amaze and inspire me. Thank you." (Ruty Rutenberg, Guild Adept, Co-Creator & Dungeon Master of Maze Arcana)

"This should be called the Players Handbook 2. It's a magnificent tome of inspiration and awe-inspiring content! As someone who focuses on story more than numbers this book has my mind spinning in wheels - can I leave work and just go play with this book please? The Player's Companion is a masterful work that genuinely expands the narrative options for role-players, experienced and new... it adds to the Dungeons and Dragons arsenal of storytelling like no other... this is a book that Wizards should have released themselves... I love it..!" (Guy Sclanders, Host of the How to be a Great Game Master and Co-founder of RPG Table Finder)

"...an impressive plethora of player character options from several of the Guild's finest authors... this is a book every Fifth Edition D&D player will want. Check it out!" (Tony Petrecca, author of Amazing Adventures!)

"There is so much I can use in here—I'm building a half-dwarf Janissary as we speak! Ready to kick some ass..." (Mr. Tarrasque Reviews)

Is accelerate metabolism 6th or 5th level? In the Cleric spell list it is 6th level but in the actual spell's description, it is 5th level. Which is it?

Looking into buying this, but I'm very short on cash and a bit worried about balance. I'm hoping to give it to my players without having to go through and read everything beforehand as I'm a bit strapped for time and money. Would anyone mind letting me know their thoughts on the feats, spells, and subclasses?

If I do end up buying it I'll probably be willing to *attempt* to break the classes and let the creators know about any potential game-breaking items or anything that may need some looking into.

I should add that the group in question that I'm DMing are new to D&D (most of them it's their first game) and this will be a long-running campaign. Noting how complex/over detailed it may be would also be appreciated.

Hi Severian, there are nearly 20 pages worth of preview content available above. I'd recommend you look at that and see if you like it.

This book from what I've seen so far seems extremely unbalanced and haphazardly put together.

Hi James, hundreds of hours of work went into creating this book, and it was far from haphazard! But thankyou for taking the time to have a look at our product anyway.

I bet if you actually provided better feedback then just a generic statement it would help the creators understand what you mean and what exactly is unbalanced and what you consider haphazard.

Hi mtg.

I would consider changing my review to 5 stars if some of the classes options were condensed. And anything that may seem like a blatantly powerful effect required a saving throw. I think anti-magic ray which requires an attack roll could also require a saving throw each round for an enemy to shrug it's effects. This way it is still a game changing spell with that puts a timer on the party to finish off that powerful enemy before they break free.

Like i said. Your race section is perfect. And the flavor and mechanics are there, but just how wizards does with their unearthed arcana, I would just sit down with a group of min-max players, and dms and just go over the balance, because like I said:as a player i would love to play these classes, but as in 3.5 territory more than a few of the subclasses will outshine the others, and a few had mechanics that did not make a whole lot of sense. But I totally think that if you guys combed over it a few times you would have a top quality wizards...See more

Hey MTB, if you are considering a Fantasy Grounds module conversion for this and interested in outsourcing it, please let me know. I would be interested in working out a royalties deal and completing this work for you.

You can look at some of my personal Fantasy Grounds work on DMs Guild (http://www.dmsguild.com/product/237283/The-Rift-Fantasy-Grounds?filters=45469), or see some of the modules I've converted for independent publishers (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/store/product.xcp?id=KPWRK5E).

The cover was done by Patrick E. Pullen. Most of the rest of it is stock art, much of it freely available on the DMs Guild!

I have a few questions, if you don't mind me asking.
1) Where do you get that cool art? Comission, or royalty free?
2) How do you break up payments between all contributors?
3) Will this be available in hard cover?
Thanks in advance!
Customer avatar
Chris B January 01, 2018 1:25 pm UTC
Hi Dave, thanks for the questions!

The cover art was done by Patrick E. Pullen, and the rest was stock art (much of it from the art packs that WoTC released here on DMs Guild, I believe).

DMs Guild allows creators uploading work (in this case, M.T. Black) to set up a royalty share, which automatically allocates a % of sales to anybody you like. In this case, all the creators are receiving a % of sales, with DMs Guild handling everything.

At the moment there's no option for hard cover/print on demand through DMs Guild. If that option ever becomes available, we'd absolutely look into releasing this in hard copy - for now, though, it's PDF only.

Thanks again for your interest!

Thank you, Chris!
I have one other question -
The font that you use on the cover, how do you create it? What font type is it? I notice a lot of the DM's guild titles have a white font with black borders.
Customer avatar
Chris B January 13, 2018 9:24 pm UTC
I didn't do this cover, so I can't say for sure, but the font that's used on the official WoTC releases (which this one is very similar to, if it isn't the same) is Modesto Condensed, which is available through Adobe Typekit.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
