Ever run an ongoing campaign and need a map? You need something quick, but also want something that is of high quality. If this sounds familiar, well, you're not alone.

That's where this Fantasy Grounds module comes into play. Here, you'll find a ton of maps, ready for play, all created by the talented Dyson from Dyson Logos.

Here's a quick preview of the maps included in this module.

Here are more details on the maps and module.

Overview

This module contains 90 maps from Dyson Logos. These maps have been:

  • Instrumented with pins that link to stories and vice versa.
  • Renamed, organized and gridded for impromptu play.
  • Resized and optimized to minimize loading times.

Types of Maps

The maps included in this module range from small to very large playable space. In general, however, these maps would be best used in an exploration or dungeoncrawl manner. Note that these are not individual battlemaps meant to be used for a single combat encounter.

Interlinked Stories and Maps

Each map includes a pin to its corresponding story entry. The story entry links to the map as well. Furthermore, these story entries include:

  • A link to the post on Dyson Logo's site detailing the map.
  • An excerpt from Dyson on his original intent for the map.

Dyson has incredibly imaginative ideas for these maps, as you will see. The guy is a RPG genius. However, feel free to use them in your own way.

You can, of course, prepare these maps for your use by dragging and dropping story pins, encounter pins and more onto the map.

Genericized for Ad-Hoc Play and Search

Dyson had some original purpose for each one of these maps. The main goal of this module, however, is to provide a large source of maps that can be used in an ad-hoc manner for game masters running ongoing campaigns. As a result, the maps have been genericized. These maps have been:

  • Retitled into two categories: Aboveground or Underground.
  • Retitled to include possible uses for the map such as Keep, Temple, Mansion or Inn. You can use these descriptions to filter the list of maps by simply typing one of these words.

The goal of this effort has been to make it easy to find a map, supporting impromptu play.

Additionally, color has been added for a number of maps to more clearly distinguish trees, water and lava. Yes. Lava.

Gridded for Fantasy Grounds Play

All of the maps in this module have had a grid added. This means you can simply bring up the map, add a mask and drop players onto the grid.

Note that some of the maps included in this module have a grid drawn by Dyson. In some cases, the Fantasy Grounds grid does not exactly match the drawn grid. Of course, you can always manually change the grid to fit your purposes.

Secret Stuff Has Been Removed

As originally drawn, some of these maps included overlapping passageways and hidden doors. In these cases, such secrets can be obvious to players as the map is unmasked. Pfaw. Sneaky players.

As part of the development of this module, overlapping passageways and secret doors have been removed. To give game masters an idea of the original intent, text and arrows have been added showing how how passageways connect and where secret doors are hidden. See. No hints or clues.

Modified to Minimize Load Times

Another goal of the development of this module was to minimize the loading times of these maps in Fantasy Grounds. That effort included:

  • Resizing the map such that 50 pixels equated to 5 feet.
  • Running each image through an graphic optimizer.

As a result, all but six of the maps are smaller than 500kB in size. No delaying until that map loads for that one player with a slow connection.

Dyson’s Commercial Maps License

All of the maps included in this module have been released by Dyson Logos for commercial use.

"These maps are free for anyone’s use – they are released under a free, royalty-free, commercial license. This allows them to be used, reused, modified, remixed, mangled and published for personal or commercial use. The only requirement is that you credit the map or cartography to Dyson Logos."

Note that Dyson is supported through a Patreon account. Many of these maps were only released because his patrons generously contributed financial support. Please consider supporting Dyson on Patreon so he can continue this kind of work.

It's format used by Fantasy Grounds. Just put it in Modules folder and open it in FG.

You can also rename the .mod to .zip and then unzip it and extract the maps as desired.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
