Tomb of Annihilation Companion

ADD TO WISHLIST >

This expansion to the Tomb of Annihilation adventure gives dungeon masters ready-made material to help run certain sections of the adventure with little preparation.

This book is written by the author of the best-selling Emirikol’s Guide to Devils, A Guide to Curse of Strahd, A Guide to Storm King’s Thunder, A Guide to Tomb of Annihilation and more. Included in this PDF:

  • Dinosaur Race: Alternate rules for running a dinosaur race that allows players a bit of structure to execute cool maneuvers such as attacking other riders and leaping on to someone else’s mount.

  • Jungle Travel: 30 days of jungle travel, complete with foraging results/encounters and events that occur at night. These can be dropped in to any journey through the jungle when you feel the need to liven things up.

  • Montage: A sample travel montage to help dungeon masters get a handle on hand-waving a week of travel in an interesting and consequential manner.

  • Visits from the Sewn Sisters: In the adventure, the Sewn Sisters are meant to try to invade the camp of the heroes. There is a fully-developed encounter for each hag ready to be used.

  • Killing Baggy Nanna: Notes on what is under the hag’s hood, and a special scenario for those who dare to try to find out.

  • Locations in Omu: An expansion of the “Navigation” section of Tomb of Annihilation, this has 9 buildings that can be used when heroes want to explore or rest in a random building of Omu. Each contains unique situations and encounters, some deadly and some exploratory.

  • Cog of Blood: A variant version of Room 60 in the Tomb of the Nine Gods. This version pulls monsters and NPCs from old products and adds them to the mix in encounters that don’t necessarily need to be resolved with combat.

  • Lost Treasures: Each of the “story items” listed in the Tomb adventure are fully statted-out as magic items.

  • Albino Dwarf Characters: Rules on making albino dwarf characters.

  • Yuan-Ti Characters: Rules and ideas on making yuan-ti characters right from the beginning of the adventure.

As many have commented, most of the text in the pdf can't be copied properly.

The following site worked for me to recreate a copy-able pdf: https://www.ilovepdf.com/ocr-pdf

Just purchased and still reading...
The Albino dwarf shows +1CON. Is that meant to be in addition to the +2CON dwarves normally get, for a total of +3CON?

I did not yet read the book end to end, however a good part of it and I like it very much.

However it is a no go to provide a pdf which it is impossible to copy text from. The age of printed books and playing around a table every week is over for probably a major part of us. I have been playing online with a VTT since COVID and I need to copy over at least parts of the content to use it, like stat blocks, items descriptions, etc. I will downrate the document for this reason.

I tried online OCR converters with no success.

Just in case someone with a Mac (Monterey) is not already aware: Make a screen shot of a page and your Mac will allow you to copy perfectly OCRed text from the image.

Also on a Mac: Select print, then open the Pdf file from the print dialog. Save this Pdf as a new file and select Pdf/a. This results in a perfectly OCRed document.

Great product, especially the dinosaur race, I’m definitely using that.

There are two changes I would make, where you have misread the original adventure:

1. Captain Ortimay Swift & Dark is one character, not two co-captains. “Swift & Dark” is the family name.

2. Free passes to the public bathhouse is not a good prize, the public bathhouse is already free. Perhaps this could be changed to spa treatment at the Temple of Sune, or a private bath house.

This is an excellent companion guide with one glaring exception: in the 30 Days of Jungle Travel section the PDF file is broken and translates only garbage text when copying over to another field. Kind of a big deal when you're trying to paste everything over to a program such as Realm Works.

Is there anyway to get a version of this without the background coloring? I'd like to be able to print it for my table game.

Because it had a background and could recognize characters,
I will report. The capacity seems to be 10MB or less.

In the Dinosaur Race section, there is a mention of a dinosaur's "minimum speed". What is the minimum speed?

According to the Tomb of Annihilation rules, a rider that fails their Animal Handling check has a speed of 0 ("that dinosaur's tally doesn't increase that turn"), a rider that beats their Animal Handling check has the lower speed listed, and a rider that beats their Animal Handling check while lashing out furiously has the higher speed listed. This would imply that a dinosaur's minimum speed is zero. Is this the intent?

I suggest the following house rule instead: a rider that fails their Animal Handling check travels at the lower speed listed (so not zero), while a rider that succeeds at their Animal Handling check has the higher speed listed. Lashing out furiously either does nothing, or simply gives advantage to the Animal Handling check. Thoughts?

Regarding the Dinosaur Race, is it intended for the race to be "chained" or "unchained"?

As a reminder, a chained race is one in which dinosaurs have their claws and horns blunted as so to not injure competing dinosaurs.

Clearly there is no Printer Friendly version nor copy paste friendly version coming, so what I did was took screenshots of my PDF and fed it into an Online OCR Program to extract text from images. Tedious but dependable.

I agree with the ability to be able to copy the text. I use Fantasy Grounds and have tried everything to convert this to be able to put this amazing guide into fantasy ground but have ended up just typing it out bit by bit which obviously takes ages. I even tried emailing Sean but he probably thought I was just a crazy person

The alternate rules for the dinosaur race in this book went down as one of the highlights of the entire campaign. It was exciting, had clear rules, and allowed for some creative efforts on my players' parts. Can't ask for much more.

The addition to the Sewn Sisters has also lent to a more fleshed out villain that the players are terrified of and enjoy. All in all, this is worth every cent. I'd recommend checking out the creator's other, free content to see his style. If you like it, this is more of the same. Fantastic job, Sean.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
