“This is an incredible supplement full of clever writing that made me think Ed Greenwood had contributed. Every spellcaster, from wizards to clerics to eldritch knights, needs a copy of this book. Sure, this book has hundreds of balanced, creative, fun, new spells to fill your arsenal and is brimming with magic items both sinister and hilarious, but it also is chock full of story bits. Names for towers, magic words to shout when casting spells, and more, this supplement is worth at least triple every penny you drop on it... I could not be more excited!” (James Intracaso, host of Tabletop Babble)

“A fantastic book filled with some of the greatest powers ever to shine in the lands of Faerun! This book is a a wonderful asset for players seeking more options for their arcane characters or dungeon masters seeking new ways to spice up their arcane villains!” (Mike Shea, author of The Lazy DM)

"Elminster’s backlog of Wizard Tower Names and the tomes within the Spellcaster’s Library are perfect for those players that love to explore the details absent from current modules and will fuel your own adventures with new possibilities. Magical Trinkets and Strange Elixir made the little artificer in me go wild! My favorite section by far pertains to exemplary options for DMs or fastidious PCs roleplaying magical dialects and phrases with Verbal Spell Components. Okay, you got me… I’m impressed. (Ruty Rutenberg, Co-Creator & Dungeon Master of Maze Arcana)

Hover: How big is the effect? Is the web of energy invisible? If so, can a creature notice it? How?

Spells:

Entropic Shield: Material component is (your holy symbol), yet it is available to bards, which typically don't have a holy symbol (and if they do, it is of no mechanical value to that class).

Hailstones: Duration of Concentration, up to 1 minute, so I assume the hailstones float nearby the caster for the duration, but what action do they take to launch the stones and how many can they launch with that action? Can I launch them upon casting? For now, I just model it after Melf's Minute Meteors (Elemental Evil Player's Companion / Xanathar's Guide to Everything)

Spells

Elemental Body: This is minor but shouldn't the conditions say poisoned, unconscious, paralyzed, and stunned? Instead of poison, sleep, paralysis, and stunning?

Energized Shield: Can either creatures safely wield the shield? Also, the way it is worded makes it seem like you gain damage resistance for simply casting the spell even if you arent holding the shield. And I assume the shield returns to normal once the spell ends, the spell should clarify.

Does the spell Alicorn Lance, regrow the lance after being launched or does the spell end after it is launched, whether it hits or misses?

Hey Kite, great question.

Once you fire the horn the spell ends.

I can see where the language is confusing. We are currently updating Elminster's Guide to Magic for print on demand, I will make sure the spell description is updated.

Also, Blood Mantle: what are the AC and HP of the blood wall effect of the spell? And does it have resistance to fire and cold damage but vulnerability to lightning?

Elemental Blade: Does the secondary 1d4 fire damage explained in the 2nd half of the spell ongoing until they choose to drop prone or otherwise somehow extinguished them? When do they make the choice to drop prone, upon being hit, or at some point during their turn? And when do they take fire damage if they choose not to go prone?

For Death Armor and Acidic Armor, how does the spell interact with grappling or being grappled. I assume that the creature touching the armor takes damage at the start of each turn for as long as it is grappling or being grappled.

Cloudburst seems like it was meant to target only willing creatures, and it can target of to six creatures but has a range of touch, trivial but kind of odd to imagine. (imo)

Blastbones allows for no saving throw but the damage can scale a pretty...See more

Life Bolt; The spell is confusing me. It deals with both hit dice and hit points. can you explain this better to me please.

Hello Walter, thanks for asking.

It might help to think of Life Bolt as having two separate stages.

In the first stage you target an undead creature within range and inflict damage on yourself to power the spell. This damage cannot be greater than half the number of Hit Dice you have remaining.

In the second stage you damage the target. The amount of damage the target takes depends on how much damage you inflicted on yourself.

For example, a 12th level wizard is being attacked by a ghoul. This is his second combat today and the wizard has already taken a short rest, using 2 of his 12 available Hit Dice to heal some damage. He cast Life Bolt and targets the ghoul. He may inflict up to 5 points of damage to himself because he has 10 Hit Dice remaining for the day. If the wizard had used 4 Hit Dice during his short rest, he would have 8 Hit Dice remaining for the day, and could only inflict up to 4 points of damage to himself.

Once the wizard has...See more

An idea comes to mind, what with the stream of error reports and blah. Have you guys considered putting together a discord for people to report errors, get the errata documents, and post news of new/upcoming builds as well as possibly gauge the audience about things like balance and etc?

It's a good idea - I'm only just getting into discord myself, but more and more folk are saying its the way to go. If we create too many channels for feedback, though, it makes things challenging. So we need to think carefully about it.

One more, you have the spell enervation in your list, which was also added in Xanathar's guide. Suggest renaming and/or spell tweaking.

I found a couple issues. There's a spell Visage of the Deity, Greater, but that's the only version. Dread Mercy is on the lists as 3rd level spells, but in actuality it is a first level spell, and Death Armor, despite being a 2nd level spell, says when cast as 2nd level or higher, instead of 3rd.

I’m a bit curious, do the spells of “Elminster’s guide to divination” are included in this book or just a few of them? I’m asking this because I wanna know if I just have to buy this pdf or both.

The Guide to Divination adds a whole bunch of new divination spells and magic items, etc. Read the introduction to the Divination book (it's in the preview) to understand what the book is giving you. cheers, MTB

Spellscar Savant mentions "Your mastery of your spellscar allows you to tap into the raw magical energy known as spellfire, either to heal yourself with its sizzling power or invigorate your body in combat." but I dont see any ability to "heal".

Argh, you are right! The Channeler gets healing but not the Savant. I'll need to ask Jeremy (the author of that archetype) if he meant for the Savant to have a healing buff of some sort.

One nit picky comment about the formatting of spells. The casting time, range, components, duration block should be consistent between all spells. There are a number of spells throughout the book that has Range and Components swapped.

Hello MTB+Team! I'm currently in the process of reviewing the entire PDF; as a part of my process towards enabling a books content for play at my table, I retype everything to help me memorize it. After many days, I just finished up with all of the spells, and the majority of it is awesome content! However, I did find a couple of issues; a few glaring balance issues, but majority is just editing stuff. I will list these issues below! I hope this helps you all improve this book and make it the best version of itself.

Azuth's Alteration Mantle: Duration of ward is not specified.
Blade of Pain and Fear: damage type not specified.
Blastbones: enemy skeleton does not get a save, or a spell attack against enemy skeleton is not specified; may be intended, just seems odd.
Blood Frenzy: perhaps limit to before next long rest; this prevents abuse example being any time the party has a day or more of downtime/non-combat, it wouldn’t make sense to not take this spell, use it on the...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
