5e Solo Gamebooks presents The Death Knight’s Squire, a 100+ page solo adventure for D&D Fifth Edition, set in the Forgotten Realms. This adventure has been created for individual play without a dungeon master, and it is a great way to scratch your D&D itch between regular adventures with your DM. Or, it can serve as a way for a player who cannot find a group to get a taste of the game.

“Definitely worth every dollar and more. The amount of work that has been put into this is incredible. You will most assuredly have fun adventuring ‘Solo Style’.”   Josh Lambert

“If, as I did, you cut your teeth on Fighting Fantasy or Lone Wolf gamebooks, you will definitely enjoy playing this solo D&D Adventure!”   David Bond

"Definitely a great substitute for group play."  Travis Dickens

The Death Knight’s Squire is the first in a planned series of solo, DM-less adventures. Unlike standard gamebooks, 5e Solo Gamebooks include a map / token dynamic to make the experience more like full tabletop gaming. Sections of the map are revealed as the PC moves through the adventure, encountering monsters, items and other occurrences. The PDF contains clickable links that move you between your choices, keeping you fully immersed. With over 350 separate narrative entries, as well as varied combat encounters, there are innumerable paths your quest could take! Another difference from standard gamebooks is that you roll up your own PC, just like in a normal D&D quest.

You will need access to a printer (preferably colour, although black and white would suffice) in order to print the Maps Booklet for the optimal experience. You may choose to print the adventure booklet too, if you wish, although this could be accessed from laptop or tablet where you will have access to the active links. If you do not have access to a printer, .jpg files of the maps have also been included for you to load into applications like Roll20, where you can place and move tokens digitally. You will also need some small objects (miniatures, game tokens, coins) to function as PC and monster tokens.

The Death Knight’s Squire has been extensively playtested by experienced players of 5e D&D, and includes combat, opportunities for spellcasting, use of diverse class feats / skills and more. The quest should take about 2-4 hours and is designed to be as close to the experience of playing with a DM as possible. (NOTE: It can also easily be played by two players, or run as a full party adventure with a DM and multiple players).

So read the introduction to the Adventure Booklet (do this first), roll up a new Level 2 PC and let’s get playing! And make sure to follow this publisher (5e Solo Gamebooks) to stay informed about future gamebook releases.

Attention Non Fantasy Grounds users!

Ever wanted to TRY Fantasy Grounds?  This adventure is fully compatible with the DEMO version of Fantasy Grounds!  Just go to fantasygrounds.com, download the DEMO, and load this up!

I HIGHLY suggest you read the tutorial and play the example campaign (it's a couple of encounters).

Then you'll be ready!  Enjoy!

Hey Will. You do NOT need to pay for any of the 5E books to play this. Fantasy Grounds comes with the 5E SRD files, so you can build characters and have everything you need to play this.

The adventure was very good. It really is like a 5e version of the old Choose Your Own Adventure books. Having the adventure ready to go in Fantasy Grounds was well worth the few bucks over the cost of just the PDF. Make a choice and then click the link. Quick and you don't accidentally read entries you aren't supposed to. The only issue came when fighting the Death Knight. The link to the token was an entry or two later I thought it should be. In other combats you read that there is a bad guy and then right below is the link for it. Also I had a little difficulty when the stat block changed. I wasn't sure if the damage should carry over to the final stat block.

I'm going to grab the next one shortly.

Found an oversight on 500.10 Tilepage 1. The link to 223.00 QUIETENTRY is missing.

Hmm. Ok, if you say so. On my copy there is nothing there but the text. I added the link myself.

I downloaded the file and double checked. The link is there, perhaps you can update the file?

Yep, I tried again and the file contains the link, as you said. Not sure what went wrong with the other one. Thanks again. I love the adventure and am eagerly awaiting the Fantasy Grounds conversion for the sequel. I hope you are doing it.

Just ran through this adventure and found it enjoyable, thanks! I did find several bugs that you may want to address:

<spoiler>

In story 271.00 SPIDERBATTLE, the link for victorious points to an image instead of the correct story.
In story 500.60 TILEPAGE 6, the link for the map is missing.
The dagger attack action for Darek has an incorrect damage type of bludgeoning.
The damage type for the 'Sword of the Goddess's Wrath' is missing the magic type.

I have downloaded the mod file and it works in FG! You wrote in the Adventure Booklet: "You will need to print the Maps Booklet... You may want to print out the Adventure Booklet".
But where are these PDFs???
Customer avatar
Rob T December 13, 2017 10:38 pm UTC
CREATOR
Norbert, the FG conversion is a faithful rendering of the text from the PDF, so it may say things that don't apply to the FG version such as "...print the maps...". But all the maps you need are in the module, you don't print anything when playing the FG version.

(On mac steam demo) I have moved the .mod file to /Users/simon/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/Fantasy Grounds/FantasyGrounds.app/Contents/Resources/drive_c/users/Wineskin/Application Data/Fantasy Grounds/modules but the application cant find the campaign. (Ive also unzipped a version and put it in the modules folder, as well as the campaign folder with the .mod)

Unfortunately, they are two separate products, with separate commission structures. You would need to contact customer service to have them refund your original purchase and then rebuy the other. Sorry about that. We try to be clear about which is which.

"Contact us" link bottom left of this page. Make sure you're on a PC, not mobile. I;m sure you can go ahead and just grab the FG version now (so you can play) and then they'll refund you the other later. Or you can wait for the refund first.

When you store the file, make sure to store the .mod file within your "modules" folder in the place where you have that installed (usually it's something like "C:Users***AppDataRoamingFantasy Groundsmodules") that way when you open Fantasy Grounds, it will be in your library. Hope that helps!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
