5e Solo Gamebooks presents The Death Knight’s Squire by Paul Bimler, a 100+ page solo adventure for D&D Fifth Edition, set in the Forgotten Realms. This adventure has been created for individual play without a dungeon master, and is is a great way to scratch your D&D itch between regular adventures with your DM. Or, it can serve as a way for a player who cannot find a group to get a taste of the game.

“Definitely worth every dollar and more. The amount of work that has been put into this is incredible. You will most assuredly have fun adventuring ‘Solo Style’.”   Josh Lambert

“If, as I did, you cut your teeth on Fighting Fantasy or Lone Wolf gamebooks, you will definitely enjoy playing this solo D&D Adventure!”   David Bond

"Definitely a great substitute for group play."  Travis Dickens

The Death Knight’s Squire is the first in a planned series of solo, DM-less adventures. Unlike standard gamebooks, 5e Solo Gamebooks include a map / token dynamic to make the experience more like full tabletop gaming. Sections of the map are revealed as the PC moves through the adventure, encountering monsters, items and other occurences. The PDF contains clickable links that move you between your choices, keeping you fully immersed. With over 350 separate narrative entries, as well as varied combat encounters, there are innumerable paths your quest could take! Another difference from standard gamebooks is that you roll up your own PC, just like in a normal D&D quest.

You will need access to a printer (preferably colour, although black and white would suffice) in order to print the Maps Booklet for the optimal experience. You may choose to print the adventure booklet too, if you wish, although this could be accessed from laptop or tablet where you will have access to the active links. If you do not have access to a printer, .jpg files of the maps have also been included for you to load into applications like Roll20, where you can place and move tokens digitally. You will also need some small objects (miniatures, game tokens, coins) to function as PC and monster tokens.

The Death Knight’s Squire has been extensively playtested by experienced players of 5e D&D, and includes combat, opportunities for spellcasting, use of diverse class feats / skills and more. The quest should take about 2-4 hours and is designed to be as close to the experience of playing with a DM as possible. (NOTE: It can also easily be played by two players, or run as a full party adventure with a DM and multiple players).

So read the introduction to the Adventure Booklet (do this first), roll up a new Level 2 PC and let’s get playing! And make sure to follow this publisher (5e Solo Gamebooks) to stay informed about future gamebook releases.

The sequel to The Death Knight's Squire is Tyrant of Zhentil Keep and is available HERE.

The Death Knight's Squire is also available on Fantasy Grounds, at the following address:

Played this today with my wife; we had a great time. We printed the maps at 125% and used miniatures. Looking forward to the next installment. Hoping to see specific entries for both one and two player notes on the individual entries.

I really enjoyed this adventure, and it inspired me to create my own 5e Solo Adventure. I would love for you to check it out and leave a review. We need more of these out there!

5E Solo G - I'm new(ish) to 5E. Why do you make the restriction of players not using Unearthed Arcana? Is that not a single other source?

Good question. Alot of AL games don't allow UA material, and the PHB+1 rule is pretty good in ensuring balance, which as a DM (I'm not there in person) allows me to gauge balance better when I'm writing the adventure.

I've already had far more than 4 hours of fun from this adventure, I think I'm at around 10 so far, its top-shelf stuff Solo G. But I made a new rule for myself when I play solo, everytime my character gets to have a rest (short or long) they have to make an entry into their journal. When I rolled up my character I decided to give him a bard friend who was not on the adventure, but had asked my character to keep a journal of his travels as a resource for writing sagas. I would definately recommend that other solo players try and write an in character journal as they play, its been adding a nice bit of RP to the experience of solo gaming, and extends the time you get to spend in the adventure.

I love that idea Dylan. In fact, you're making me think I should design a little free journal template for players. Wouldn't take long to tool up in Photoshop.

Hi Dale
If you scroll down through the comments you'll find one comment of mine which contains a sendspace link to download the full map.
Suggestions for more solos - Wait for my next adventure to come out?! (Should be out in about a month) Yeah tbh there's not a lot, but with a bit of digging you can turn up some good 1e/ 2e/ 4e stuff if you don't mind playing using those systems.

Is the content suitable for children (between age 8-11)? I'll be there to guide the child through the game but just wanted to make sure the overall storyline is child friendly.

Hmmm... tbh Jia, there are some bits that could be considered a bit scary... but nothing too over the top. I read a lot worse when I was a kid, but then that was a different time!

How can I access the Adventure booklet from my iPad?

Hi Eric
You might need to load it to a computer first and then sync it with iBooks.

Googled and found this:
To sync a PDF from your computer to iBooks on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:
Select your iOS device. ...
Under Settings, click Books.
Select Sync Books.
If iTunes is set to sync only selected books, make sure that there's a check in the checkbox next to the PDF you want to sync.
Click Sync.

Hope that helps.

118 pages should definitely going to take more than 2-4 hours to finish. Anyone played through this and could share how long it roughly took them? I have playtested material in the past and when you -know- (even more when you've created) the adventure it plays shorter.

Love the idea. Certainly looks to have a lot of work in it.

Hey Andrew! It was pretty extensively playtested and 4 hours was the longest time period I heard of it taking, although if you include character creation / reading through the module guidelines that would bump it up a bit. Yes there are 118 pages, but 15 or so of those pages are maps, and as it is a gamebook you don't read all the pages. Also, there is a definite possibility for it to go longer if you explore every inch of the adventure, which is encouraged!

Enric, I can't see your comment to reply to it for some reason. But yes, the adventure can easily be played with 2 PCs. All instructions on how to do this are in the introduction. There is one rule that I am playing with for the next adventure - when you do battle with a final boss, for 2 PCs add +2 to its AC and add half its HP to its total. Example, 14 AC and 30 HP would convert to 16 AC and 45 HP for 2 players. Hope that's clear

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
