5e Solo Gamebooks presents The Death Knight’s Squire by Paul Bimler, a 100+ page solo adventure for D&D Fifth Edition, set in the Forgotten Realms. This adventure has been created for individual play without a dungeon master, and is is a great way to scratch your D&D itch between regular adventures with your DM. Or, it can serve as a way for a player who cannot find a group to get a taste of the game.

“Definitely worth every dollar and more. The amount of work that has been put into this is incredible. You will most assuredly have fun adventuring ‘Solo Style’.”   Josh Lambert

“If, as I did, you cut your teeth on Fighting Fantasy or Lone Wolf gamebooks, you will definitely enjoy playing this solo D&D Adventure!”   David Bond

"Definitely a great substitute for group play."  Travis Dickens

The Death Knight’s Squire is the first in a planned series of solo, DM-less adventures. Unlike standard gamebooks, 5e Solo Gamebooks include a map / token dynamic to make the experience more like full tabletop gaming. Sections of the map are revealed as the PC moves through the adventure, encountering monsters, items and other occurences. The PDF contains clickable links that move you between your choices, keeping you fully immersed. With over 350 separate narrative entries, as well as varied combat encounters, there are innumerable paths your quest could take! Another difference from standard gamebooks is that you roll up your own PC, just like in a normal D&D quest.

You will need access to a printer (preferably colour, although black and white would suffice) in order to print the Maps Booklet for the optimal experience. You may choose to print the adventure booklet too, if you wish, although this could be accessed from laptop or tablet where you will have access to the active links. If you do not have access to a printer, .jpg files of the maps have also been included for you to load into applications like Roll20, where you can place and move tokens digitally. You will also need some small objects (miniatures, game tokens, coins) to function as PC and monster tokens.

The Death Knight’s Squire has been extensively playtested by experienced players of 5e D&D, and includes combat, opportunities for spellcasting, use of diverse class feats / skills and more. The quest should take about 2-4 hours and is designed to be as close to the experience of playing with a DM as possible. (NOTE: It can also easily be played by two players, or run as a full party adventure with a DM and multiple players).

So read the introduction to the Adventure Booklet (do this first), roll up a new Level 2 PC and let’s get playing! And when you're done, be sure to check out the other books in the series, as listed below. The sequel to Death Knight's Squire is Tyrant of Zhentil Keep.

This was my first time playing any version of D&D and it was great! I wanted to try some type of solo experience to learn the ropes before hopping into a traditional D&D match, and I chose this one.

While I know that the traditional D&D player experience is more expansive, this adventure helped me understand the basics of exploration, combat, and the DM's role a bit better after reading through the 5e PHB. Dying in my first playthrough also pushed me to understand character creation a little better for when I rolled my next PC (who I won with!).

For anyone like me who wants to do a bit of hands-on learning before hopping into a traditional match (with the understanding that you will have to slightly adjust your understanding of the mechanics and rules), or if you think solo gameplay might be your kind of thing, I highly recommend The Death Knight's Squire. I'm excited to continue with this series!

My son and I need an unbiased opinion (or, I suppose, the creator's would be a biased but correct opinion :)).

At one point, someone can be tossed a "dagger or shortsword". I have a spare handaxe that isn't currently embedded in any opposition... can I toss him that different small bladed weapon?

Absolutely. This is a perfect example of how I want people to approach the adventure - not necessarily taking everything at face value, but using common sense and adapting the adventure as you see fit. I hope you're enjoying it :) Thanks for the support Joseph!

I am on my second play thru, my first character died. I’m a bit of a novice with DnD. In the NICECAMP entry, (Despite your troubled dreams, you sleep well and may recover one hit die). Does this mean I recover all lost hit points? Or only one die worth of points?
Thank you!

I'm looking forward to playing this. I don't suppose there's a miniature list for this module and the 4 subsequent adventures?

Just to confirm, I really only need the Player's Handbook to be able to run this solo, correct?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
