Old School Hacks Vol. 2: Player Roles - Campaign Management for Players and DMs

This guide for players and DMs provides advice, options, tools, and handouts for helping your DM make the game easier to run, as well as adding Old School-style gameplay to 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons. Take the role of caller, mapper, timekeeper, quartermaster, or rules coordinator and use the provided handouts and illustrations to optimize your D&D games!

Be A Better Player. Expanding on content first developed for Old School Hacks Vol. 1: Hexcrawling - Wilderness Exploration and Random Encounters, this book gives new and experienced players guidance that will help create a cohesive party of characters, streamlined bookkeeping, and the tools to take on responsibilities that can distract or bog down the Dungeon Master during play. Ever hear stories of Gygax & company's use of party callers and mappers during their extended hexcrawling campaigns? This guide brings that to the modern age, and has tons of tips on how to make your party act like a team and make a living in their chosen career of adventure!

Be A Streamlined Gamer. The tools and forms designed for this release are elegant, simple, and immediately useful at any game table. Player Roles includes a Party Tracker for up to 6 characters along with their marching order in two different formations; two types of Map Keys to make mapping as in-depth or as simple as you want; three useful lists of Containers and Consumables straight out of the core rulebooks for building your own tracking tools; a variant, simplified Initiative system; a blank Calendar of Harptos page to build your own campaign calendar or time tracking tools; Quest Cards that help keep your party focused on the NPCs, Locations, Rewards, and Goals that they come across during the course of their campaign; and advice from 30+ years of gaming!

This 16-page guide contains:

  • General player advice for creating a cohesive adventuring party and making gameplay run smoother.

  • A chapter each for the roles of Caller, Mapper, Timekeeper, Quartermaster, and Rules Coordinator.

  • Advice, forms, and variations to make the “boring” stuff fun, like adding a Co-Dungeon Master, using arts & crafts to track consumables, and more!

  • Elegantly designed handouts and record keeping forms that make managing notes and party loot easier!

  • Tips for mapping in multiple styles, whether it’s on a grid, free-form in a notebook or on scrap paper, or using digital tools.

  • Useful lists of consumables and variant rules for Initiative.

  • 30+ years of gaming advice distilled into tips that you can use at your D&D table tonight!

Looking for some feedback!

Currently in the works to be added to Player Roles:
1. Rounds/minutes/hours timekeeping sheet for durations & consumable items (rations, torches, etc.)
2. Full-page versions of all the handouts for better printing
3. Some new blank calendar pages formatted to represent calendars beyond simply the Calendar of Harptos (Forgotten Realms)

Any other ideas or requests? Any edits to the existing sheets you'd really love to see?

Additionally, we're looking to greatly expand the Co-DMing section. If people have feedback and experiences regarding having a Co-DM, we'd love to hear it. Comment here or contact us through

Was hoping for a better timekeeping sheet, but an all around good product!

Thank you for the feedback! Are you looking for timekeeping that goes round-by-round, or longer intervals? Or different calendar types?

I'm very much open to adding to and improving this product going forward: all of my releases are "living" documents!

Gary said, "strict timekeeping. I think I'm just being too literal. I'm also thinking as A DM. A more fine grain timekeeping worksheet would be great, what I would love to see is full page worksheets. Thanks for taking the time (hehe) to respond.

Rules Edition(s)
Original electronic
Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
