Dungeon Module J4: The Mind Merchant

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Three adventuring parties have been hired to rescue the daughter of a wealthy noble. If they are to succeed in their quest they must tackle deadly traps, brain-teasing puzzles, and fearsome foes. Nevertheless, these trials are merely a taste of what lies ahead from the sinister MIND MERCHANT.

This module contains background information, Dungeon Master notes, and a complete map level. THE MIND MERCHANT is from the Just Because(”J”) series; like others in the series, it is meant to stand on its own and is a complete 5TH EDITION DUNGEONS & DRAGONS adventure. The recommended number of players is four to five.

Brief Outline of the Story

A group of the rich and old are dying. They ask Velthomer (the mind merchant) to transfer their minds into strong younger bodies. Velthomer hires three adventuring parties to fulfill a task, but in truth, it’s just a giant test to decide if their bodies are suitable for the old. Those who pass the test are to be the new vessels of the elderly.

What to Expect:

The Mind Merchant is a one-shot adventure and a dungeon crawl at that. The adventure at hand is more of a “funhouse” of challenges and encounters. Players may find the order of events to be random and without structure. This is on purpose. The overall goal of the villain is to test the players through a gauntlet of various situations.

Leveling:

This adventure will not award experience points but rather players will level after each of the five sections. Players will be level six by the adventure’s end.

The following books are needed to play this adventure:

- The Player’s Handbook (PHB)
- Dungeon Master’s Guide (DMG)
- Monster Manual (MM)
- Volo’s Guide to Monsters (VGtM)

About the Author: I started D&D with the classic adventure White Plume Mountain and loved it. I enjoyed the simple formula and the way we just jumped into it. The quest lasted a few nights, and we felt accomplished as players when we finished it. My ultimate goal was to capture what I loved so much with that module and classic modules in general.

The Mind Merchant was made to emulate a classic Dungeons & Dragons adventure in the best way I could. Obviously, these are 5th Edition rules, and the pages inside follow that formula, but I've emulated the covers to classic modules, even made the traditional blue and white maps. Like a classic D&D module there's a little background info, and then you're put straight into the adventure and go from there.

The Mind Merchant is meant to be played as an adventure anyone can jump into and have fun. I've tried to structure this adventure so that everyone gets a chance to shine.

HAVE FUN!!!

I have adapted this for a very different setting and a different power level. The mechanics of the dungeon are great for pretty much every kind of group and allow a DM to challenge the players with the interesting puzzles. [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
