Character Options: Talents (5e)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Talents are extraordinary aspects of a character’s abilities, background, personality, physique, proficiencies, and features. They are similar to, but not always as powerful as, standard Feats. They are bonus 'perks' that improve your current existing abilities, slightly or temporarily shift game mechanics into your favor, provide you with a new capability, or build your character’s background and personality for a richer roleplaying experience.

The Fantasy Grounds VTT version can be found here.

Quick question, how compatible would you say will all the character option books be with Tales of the Valiant?

Hello,
These are great! Question- for "Impairing Critical," it says the target "is also
bleeding and will take extra weapon damage at the start of
your next turn". I want to check, does this mean at the start of their next turn the player rolls the base weapon damage (like 1d4 for sickle) without modifiers?
Thanks

Here's an idea for a racial talent that I wanted to run by you:

PREHENSILE TAIL

You were born with an unusually long and flexible tail.

Prerequisite: Tiefling

Benefit: Your tail is prehensile, able to grab and carry small objects. While your character cannot wield weapons with their tail with this talent, they can use it to retrieve small, stowed objects carried on their person as a swift action.

That is pretty good, and I think can be applied to any race that has a tail.

When I update Talents III, I can add that.

However, I am currently holding off on all updates until the new PHB is released.

Mini-feats: I like it! More comparable to 3e feats. Does this book offer guidance on how to offer Talents without overpowering your players? Ex., give them a talent every 4th level? Offer them as rewards (i.e. Elven Precision for elves who make X number of hits in a row, etc)?

There is a small section at the start to guide you on how to implement the talents and balance your game. One of the suggestions to balance your game is to also give NPCs and monsters talents. But ultimately, it should be entirely up to you as you balance the system with your campaign.

Hi Vapora. None at the moment but it's impossible for me to add them on Talents III. I just need some time to develop it but I'm currently busy with several projects I need to finish first.

Hi Adam. This is something that I've thought about and planned. But it would have to wait until I've finished my current projects, which have me locked in until 2023. Right now I can't simply release the product as PoD, as there are certain requirements that need to be accomplished first. But thank you for your interest. I know there are many people who want these series to be in physical form as well.

We enjoyed talents as half feats in our campaign.
Great fun!

Some feedback regarding talents as half feats with some new talent suggestions. Feel free to use:

Agile, Astute, etc. Reroll one specific check or saving throw 1/long rest
Feedback: Underpowered, compare with Lucky feat.
Suggestion: 1/short rest?

Commanding Precence, Great Fortitude +1 On saving throw
Feedback: Underpowered, compare with Resilient feat.
Suggestion: Add proficiency in a save.

Extra Rage
Feedback: Underpowered,. Fatigue seems unwaranted. Unneeded with special rules for fatigue
Suggestion: +1 rage Remove fatigue or at least replace fatigue with one level of exhaustion

Barbarian is fine until high levels IMHO. Damage resistance gets poached at lvl 17 by several other classes (war cleric etc) sure barb gets against magical weapons but war priest etc is always on. Talents could be used to remedy.
Suggestions:
* Brutal strikes....See more

Hi Marcus, sorry I didnt notice this post before.

The talents are definitely underpowered if you will compare to feats. They should, at best, equal to 1/3 of a feat.

I'm starting a new campaign that will use milestone leveling; however, the advancement will be slower than the players would like, to keep them from leveling out of the campaign events. I'm debating using Talents as a reward outside of leveling up - instead of gaining a talent as described in the book, I'm trying to puzzle out awarding a talent between levels.

I've thought about awarding a talent as a milestone reward after every even level - so they'd earn one between level 2 and 3, between 4 and 5, etc. However, this means they'd earn ten talents by the time they're 20th level, as opposed to six under the rules as described.

Anybody who has experience with Talents - is this too much/overpowered? If it is, can you suggest any alternatives?

Thanks!

Hmmm, if you'd do it that way, then I'd suggest a rule that players can only keep a max of 4-6 talents at any time. So when they hit the max and they earn more talents later on, they can replace old ones. That way they still retain flexibility but they don't get too overpowered with so many talents.

I noticed the prerequisite for Two-Weapon Rend is Two-Weapon Fighting. Since any character with two weapons has the potential to fight with two weapons, should that prerequisite be Dual Wielder?

dunno if you got this figured out by now. but Two-Weapon Fighting is just the fighting style version of Dual Wielding

Sorry for the confusion. It should be the fighting style 'Two-Weapon Fighting' that fighters and rangers can acquire. I will update the book to make this specific.

This looks extremely interesting as my players feel like they don't have much agency over character customization. Before I took the full leap, how would this interact with feats themselves? Would you replace the entire feat system with this or in addition?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
