"5 Stars. Exactly what I was looking for! Gives my players that extra flavor and utility while maintaining game balance. So many cool talents in here, I can't wait for the second book!" - Joshua C.

"4 stars. I want my players to be epic. I want them to be larger than life heroes. Adding talents give them another simple mechanic to give a bit more depth to the characters. All in all I really like this idea of lesser powered talents that can provide additional dimension to characters and I'm looking forward the the second one coming out." - Steve C.

Character Options: Talents offers variant rules for your 5th edition gaming. It does not change any of the existing rules. Instead, it provides you with additional options for character customization and development. It offers over 230 talents that you can choose from, enabling you to bring flavor, diversity, and much needed punch to your characters!

The way Improved Flexible Casting reads, because it only affects Creating Spell Slots, could a sorcerer simply not create (for example) a 3rd level spell slot for 4 Sorcery Points, then next turn Convert a Spell Slot of 3rd level to Sorcery Points for a return of 5? This effectively nets them unlimited sorcery points and subsequently infinite spell slots.

Improved Flexible Casting
You have mastered the art of Flexible Casting.
Prerequisite: Sorcerer level 12.
Benefit: The cost of creating spell slots as shown in the Creating Spell Slots table (PHB p.101) will cost you 1 sorcery point less than normal. Additionally, you can create spell slots of up to 6th level. It will cost 7 sorcery points to convert a 6th level spell slot.

Won't you only get 3 back when you convert the 3rd level spell?

Holy crap I'm glad I said something. After a year and a half of DMing I've got my first player choosing a sorcerer and neither of us saw that last bit. Forgive my oversight and thanks for pointing that out!

Is Improved Bardic Inspiration supposed to work with all abilities that use bardic inspiration dice (like cutting words and peerless skill) or only the "vanilla" bardic inspiration ability?

Hi Lefteris! Improved Bardic Inspiration only works with the "vanilla" bardic inspiration ability.

Does Improved Second Wind heal 2d10 + fighter level + fighter level?
Customer avatar

Yes, you heal an additional 1d10 + fighter's level. So yeah, that's a total of 2d10 + 2x fighter's level.

You have Tool Focus as a Misc Talent but the prerequisite is being a Halfing, so shouldn't it be a racial talent?
Customer avatar
Dragonix N September 05, 2017 1:18 am UTC
CREATOR
No, that's an errata. As I mentioned in one of the posts below, there should be no racial prerequisite. Please ignore that prerequisite for now. I will upload the fixed version soon.

Your next book says it's going to include material from Elemental Evil, Unearthed Arcana, Sword Coast Adventures, but will it even Include the Artificer, Mystic, the class archtypes and new races from the 3 Plane Shift books, and even the material from the Taldorei campaign setting created by Matt Mercer such as Blood Hunter class, the Order of the Lycan archtype for the Blood Hunter, Bard College of the Maestro, The Gunslinger archtype for Fighters, and even the Revanite Dragonborn?

I will cover everything that appeared in the official Unearthed Arcana site (http://dnd.wizards.com/articles-tags/unearthed-arcana), as well as any official releases that have come out before the book's release. The Artificer and Mystic were officially released through UA so I will definitely include them.
I have yet to read the 3 Planeshift books but as they are official D&D releases, I can possibly include them as well (but I have to check if its possible to use a campaign outside of Forgotten Realms and Ravenloft even if its official D&D).
The Tal'dorei Campaign however is not an official release and under DMG rules I therefore cannot create material for it.

Hi Dragoni X,

It's looking really good from what I can see, my current DM is reviewing whether he will use it in our game so I'll give you some feedback if he does.

I wanted to check, are there any plans to include material for races/archetypes outside of the PHB such as Volo's Guide? Also will UA material be covered, classes/archetypes/races?

Finally I'm looking forward to your book on monsters talents, keep up the great work :)

Hi everyone,

I started taking down notes and began the tweaking of all talents. This will be a long process and I hope you will have the patient to wait. For now I will keep the talents as they are. I don't want to keep small updates and keep everyone's versions too varied. I will try to come up with one big update 2 months from now, alongside the next Talents book (which should then be aligned with the updated version).

I've already began looking at increasing or adding requirements (such as ability scores, more ki points, etc.), limiting use (from short rest to long rest), or outright nerfing the features or bonus.

I would like to very much hear from you what particular talents you wish to tweak, tone down, and how to balance them, if you have already done so. :)

And if I haven't said so yet, thank you for the support, feedback, and purchasing of Character Options: Talents!

Hello Dragoni X,
I've really been enjoying your book; pretty fun stuff. I did have a question about one of the talents: "Improved Blinding Strike" for Light Domain Clerics. There isn't anything in the PHB called "Blinding Strike". Are you referring to the "Warding Flare" feature for Light Domain Clerics?

I really gotta say that this needs another few pass throughs and considerations for the power level of these talents. I gave the benefit of the doubt for the 9th+ level talents but anything below that that really overpowers normal feats, especially the stronger ones, has me concerned that the quality of these talents is just too all over the place and could really use some tinkering (not even mentioning the underpowered ones).

Another worry I have for this product is that you have Archetype specific talents, but only for PHB archetypes, which leaves the other published archetypes in the dust.

As it stands now I'm going to have to do some serious tinkering and cherry picking the most balanced talents to come up with a list to present my players because the wide range of quality in these talents is too much imo.

Hi J.D.W.,

First of all, thanks for the comment. You are exactly right about your observations. In the first page of the book, it says, "Most do not bring as many features as a standard feat. Instead, they either help shape and add flavor to your character, improve your specializations, or address your opportunities. You do not need to use all of them if you think some are not balanced. Feel free to modify them as you see fit. And most importantly, have fun!"

Not all campaigns are the same. The design decisions I made are based from my experience running 5E campaigns since it came out. Most of the talents you see here are born from the opportunities I saw and what I've observed from my players. You mention that the quality of talents are too all over the place. IMO, it's the same thing in the PHB. Again, that will depend on how you run your campaigns. Because my campaign is combat/strategy heavy and light on rpg, I noticed that very quickly, in just the first year of...See more

Hey Dragni,
Love the book. There are quite a few typos throughout, but most of the time I could figure out what you mean.. the worst one I caught was in the last couple pages in the Monstrous Talents where you accidentally merged Freezing Breath and Sweeping Strike into one additional text box. No biggie though :) Planning on using these to help spice up some of the One Shots I run on Roll20. I'll let you know how it goes!
Thanks,
Matt

Yes, we do plan on tackling the UA releases. We had initially just planned on Monstrous Talents first but my partner and I have decided to just merge this with our next release and just call it Character Options: Talents 2.

This book will now cover all current and upcoming UA releases, as well as the existing player content found in Elemental Evil, Sword Coast Adventurers Guide, Volo's, and the aforementioned original Monstrous Talents.

We are in the planning stage but we are looking at a late 3rd quarter elease this year.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
