The Librarian: An Investigative Class for D&D 5e

"There are tales of monstrous beasts and hidden cities that have been passed down through generations. They are told as fables; small bedtime stories that children dream about when drifting off to sleep in warm, summer evenings. Tales of fantastical creatures, of wonderous items and of mystical landscapes far forgotten and lost to myth and legend."

"A librarian is not one to take such stories lightly. Buried under books, alchemical equipment and strange, technological inventions, a librarian follows these tales, setting forth with adventurers to discover the truth behind the legend. Using their knowledge, wit and dogged preparation, librarians defend the world from ancient otherworldly threats others never even knew existed."

Inside this pdf you will find a complete class for playing this lovecraftian inspired investigator in games of dungeons and dragons 5th edition.

Hi! I'm really excited about trying this out. However, I cannot find how many Mindful Gaze uses the character gets. It says that you get used back after a rest, and more uses at higher levels, but how many is that? Is it the same number as Mindfully Studied creatures?

Hiya Gail thanks for the support!

The mindful study feature should have uses noted down in the class table. You get your first Mindful gaze at 3rd, then an additional use at 7th, and 14th (total 3 uses). I hope that helps!

Why is it called the librarian? I've poured over it several times but never has it screamed that to me. Perhaps "(Paranormal) Investigator" or "Inscriber" or such, but really not Librarian. The way that it is has no identity ties to that term.

There's a lot of paranormal investigator classes out there on the guild, so it helped to have a more unique name to it, but the main reason is that this is a class developed from my long standing home campaign, and the concept there is similar to a 'behind the curtain' type of investigators spread across the world. Each group has their own 'library', which is essentially a collection of all their research, observations and studies into monsters and events they've encountered. This is represented by the Mindful Study feature the class uses, but also gives them their name as collectors, researchers and protectors of sensitive information.
I suppose you could also look at it like Indiana Jones, Rick O'Connell and Lara Croft call themselves 'researchers' and 'Archaeologists', not just dungeon delvers/adventurers.

I really wish this wasn't a protected pdf, because I am used to copying and pasting homebrew or outside content into roll20 character sheets, and that's simply not possible due to the secured pdfs.

I do love it though! great class. though it's weird that pagemaster gets an upgrade to mindful study the level before it gets mindful study proper, but since this campaign starts at level 3 and it's not really much of a concern.

Hi John, thanks for the kind words and feedback!
I'm looking into updating the Librarian when I get the chance, so I'll be sure to sort out the copy/paste issue in the next update, and have a good look at ensuring all the pagemaster's feature trigger at the correct points. :)

So I like this class and am planing on playing next chance I get to make a new character, but I've found 2 versions of this, one here and one on reddit, I was just wondering which was newer because there are differences between the two, especially with the hunter.

Hi Aiden, the DMsguild version of the Librarian is the most up-to-date version. The playtest version on reddit has changed dramatically since I originally posted it, both for thematic and balance reasons. :)

Thanks for the support!

I am somewhat confused as to why the Librarian's spell slot progresion does not fully follow the proper leveling for a half-caster's spell slots (see PHB p.90 for example). Though it is a half caster, it for some reason gets its spells at level one, and it gets two 4th level spell slots at level 13 when it should just get one.

Hi Rowan, the Librarian follows a slightly different progression route due to its play style and theme, so the slight shift in spell slots was done to accommodate that at earlier levels, and grant them a slight extra boost of utility at higher levels, while keeping them unique compared to other classes in the PHB.

If you must keep the spell slot progression as is, you need to update the calculation for multiclassing. <br>
With 1 level of librarian and 1 level of a non caster class such as fighter you can lose spell slots.<br>
<br>
Level 1 bob takes his first level as librarian, get 1 lvl 1 spell slot.<br>
Level 2 bob takes a level in fighter, for story reasons.<br>
Now bob uses the multiclass spellcasting table. <br>
Fighter levels don't count. And Librarian levels count for half rounded down. Well half of 1 rounded down is 0. No spell casting for Bob even though at level 1 he could cast a spell

Half librstiwn levels rounded up would probably be the least significant change.

Hey there! I instantly fell in love with this class when I heard some details in a dnd podcast campaign and bought it for my new world. Now I'm making custom character sheets pdf that are fillable. As I came to this class I noticed I could not copy the big features from the document. Could I maybe have the password to copy/paste the bigger text passages? It would make this a lot easier ^^''

Cheers :)

Hi Marcel, thanks for the kind words! There shouldn't be a password on the PDF, but to be sure I've removed the copy/paste limitations on the product page, and I'll get a reupload sorted as soon as I can and see if that fixes anything for you. :)

Updated to version 1.2 -
Changed Pagemaster Maneuver 'Insightful Observation' - specify learning 3 characteristics when using Mindful Gaze, instead of 2.

Thanks to Sacha H. for noticing the error!

I have a question. Under Mindful Gaze it says you learn 2 characteristics on a success. However, if you use the Pagemaster maneuver "Insightful Observation", it says you learn 2 characteristics instead of 1.

Is Mindful Gaze only supposed to give 1 characteristic or am I missing something ?

Aha, that is a good question! Have you got the most up to date version of the pdf? I'll take a look at it tomorrow and get it fixed, as it's a typo from an earlier version. The Pagemaster ability should give you 3 rather than 2, I believe. Either way I'll make sure it's updated by tomorrow for you.

Thanks for the question! :)

Is this class supposed to be a half-caster like Paladin or Ranger or is it supposed to be closer to Warlock? If it's the former wouldn't it gain spellcasting slots at second level like the others?

The base groundwork was a half caster, though as it lacks the fighting styles and other benefits half casters get at 1st level, I felt it was a helpful bump to give the class something else to keep it viable at 1st level while also remaining flavorful.

Fixed an error with the level requirement for Research Technique. Changed from 1st level to 2nd level.

Thanks for the update.
I have a question about mindful study. The pagemaster gains advanced mindful study at level two, starting with 4 creatures memorized, then at level three you gain the regular mindful study with a 2 creature limit. Can the pagemaster can study 6 creatures at level three or is it just 4?
Question aside, I am really enjoying the class.

Thanks for the question. I'm really glad you're enjoying the class so far!

Having a creature name written in your notebook doesn't mean you automatically have it studied, just that you have that as one of your creature options when you choose to mindfully study something.

For example, you could take notes of a hundred different encounters or creature names, but you would only ever be able to mindfully study 2 of those at a time at 3rd level, when you gain the mindful study ability.

The advanced mindful study essentially grants you the mindful study ability a level early, so you would have 4 creatures written in your notebook initially to help start you off instead of 2, but when you reach 3rd level you wouldn't get the ability again, and as your notebook has already been started, you wouldn't get an extra 2 names added to it again.

Unlike the normal limit of 2 the other archetypes get, the pagemaster can have an amount of creatures mindfully studied equal...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
