Classic Modules Today: N1 Against the Cult of the Reptile God (5e)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

In 1982, TSR published the module named “Against the Cult of the Reptile God” with the module code “N1”. It was written by Douglas Niles and published as a 28-page booklet. The module provides a town as a home base for adventure as had been previously seen in a number of other modules but for the first time introduces a threat within the town itself. In addition it provides a challenging underground adventure and a number of plot suggestions for further adventures in the area should the player characters prove successful.

This conversion guide allows DMs to run the original module with 5th Edition rules and provides a reference sheet for encounters.

To use this conversion guide, you will need a copy of "N1 Against the Cult of the Reptile God" originally available in hardcopy and now for sale in digital format at DMSGuild.com

Hi James, great work! Will be running it in a few weeks.
My question is very meta but hey... Why is Dorian a Warlock instead of a wizard? How should we justify it; who did he make a pact with?

Hi Ugo. Thanks for the feedback. I really need to get back to this and do a few updates and at the same time refamiliarise myself with it. To be honest I don't remember, but I suspect I wanted to keep the spells he had access to as close to the original module as possible, and that may have steered me to warlock (which I don't believe existed when the original was written). As to the pact etc. I leave that to you! :-) . I will try to go through the conversion this weekend and let you know if there was any other reason

Hi Alejandro. As per DM's Guide rules you need to buy the original as well. We are not allowed to produce conversions which replace the originals completely.

Hey James,
Someone pointed out, I advertised or listed my 5e conversion for N1 in the discussion threat. I honestly did not intend to do so and wanted to reach out to you and apologize. My comment has been up too long for me to delete. I will put a link to your product in the comment section of my conversion guide. Hopefully that will mitigate any confusion. I am truly sorry about this. It was accidental.

It seems to reference page 28, for seeds for further adventures, but there are only 13... What else is missing?

Hi Keith, thanks for the feedback. I see the reference you mean on page 6. The page 28 reference is actually to the original adventure, which has further seeds on page 28. For the life of me I can't remember why I put that in the conversion! But to answer your question, the conversion ends on page 14, so there is nothing missing. I seriously need to post an update to this as there are a number of small changes that have been suggested by users that I have not had time to get to. Thanks again

This seems to be an oversight, but i Could be wrong; why do most of the NPC spellcasters not have their cantrips (at will spells) listed?

Hi Karen, thanks for your feedback. There are three possible reasons. 1) An oversight, 2) I'm Lazy, 3)I thought I'd leave it to the discretion of the DM since they don't take up spell slots etc. and the DM may want to tailor the mix a little to work with (or against) his / her group.

I'm going to go with number 3 because it makes me look better :-)

Seriously though, there are a number of suggestions people have made for small changes, and sadly, real life has not given me the time to make them. I will make a real effort shortly and perhaps state in the text that the DM should remember to assign cantrips, as well as listing the number of cantrips available to each NPC etc.

Again, thanks for your feedback!

James

No Problem :) It's not a big deal deal, I'd be a pretty lazy and unimaginative DM if i couldn't pick 2 or 3 spells to fit an NPC's Theme. I was just curious :P

I thought this might be helpful. My party is about to run into Abramo. Looking at the conversion, it says that one of his first level spells is Curse (Reversed Bless), which is how it is written in the original module. "Reversed Bless" sounds a lot like the Bane spell. Bless allows you to pick targets to add 1d4 to their attack rolls, and Bane allows you to pick targets to subtract 1d4 from their attack rolls.

Thanks for the post. You may actually have discovered an oversight on my part. I believe I had meant to change that spell as 5E doesn't really use the concept of reversed spells. Thanks for finding the correct one! There are a few other updates I've been wanting to make and never seem to get around to it. Will try as soon as I have some spare time.

This comment is in response to the review by Preston H, since even the creator of a product can only leave a review after purchasing (and I'm not going to purchase my own conversion) I'm responding here.

Hi Preston, and thanks for the thoughtful and very useful review. It's always nice to see someone elses opinion of something one has written.
Regarding your concerns over Explictica Defilus, I must admit I felt the same while doing the conversion. The naga in the 5th edition monster manual is, I believe, much too powerful for a module of this level, and so I was left with the task of bringing her down to a more appropriate level without much information in the original module, which gives a very basic stat block and description. In the original she had only 40 HP (which I found surprisingly low) and so I adjusted that upward to produce a challenge rating I thought would be closer to the mark. I also have no idea what the Nagas' stats are like in the monster manual of the time, since I don't...See more

Oh wow, I wasn't expecting to hear from the product creator! I'm glad to hear you found the review useful; as I said, I find the conversion to be really solid and valuable, and I plan to make use of it next time I run the module.

If you do update the conversion and Explicitica's stat block, I'd definitely be excited to check out the new version, so I can't wait to see! Thank you again for sharing your thoughts and the process behind developing this conversion of the reptile god; it was really neat to read about. I'll keep an eye out for X6 Quagmire and try to remember to check it out.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
