This is awesome! Is there a way we can get the code you used to make this on Homebrewery? Would like to make some tweaks to this and be able to hand it out to my players with all the correct content I am wanting them to have

Do you have a PayPal I can send you some cash? I saw a video saying it was free and then realized its "Pay What You Want" thing... Now I feel kind of bad and want to be a good sport and send you some love for this nice way of telling my player "Here's your toy, now F off and let me run my campaign"

Nice and succinct codification for potion brewing. I'm going to toss it at my wizard-turned-alchemist and see if he likes it.

First things I note are:

- No potion of resistance: it probably would be a little messy to implement as I suspect that it would be different plants based on the type of damage, but you could have a magical plant that quickly evolves different strains so deal with the prevalent damage type of it's environment. So you're in the tundra and can harvest some "Stalwart Vagrant (cold)" that can be used to make potions of cold resistance.

- The number of items needed for some potions seems excessive for the 1d4 gathering. It takes an average of 5 rests to brew a single potion of healing, for example. Maybe you can add some of the excess from your Survival check to the harvest roll, or for every 5 you beat the DC by, you increase the die size?

- The flavor of how to brew the plants sometimes reads almost as if the plants are useful on...See more

Awesomee guide :D Im about to play a character inspired by Geralt of Rivia, so this will be useful. NB. Only thing that could make this sweeter would be more potions, e.g. potions that add 1 or 2 points to a stat (perhaps still to a max of 20), or other base stat modifiers :D ...And just more awesome potiions in general in the same theme as the current awesome ones :P

Thanks for the great feedback Jonas! I'll totally be considering these ideas for a future update. I like the stat increasing potions, that would be awesome. Thanks for sharing!

Tried it in my game and the player really enjoys it. I don't know if someone mentioned this but how about good herb that can cause side effect or just bad one that can be make into poison?

I didn't touch on poisons here due to the DMG having some poisons called out. I focused on useful potions. I do like the idea of having some potions with side effects, that sounds hilarious for role playing.

Grom is a character I've played for several years now and he's a big Half-Orc Barbarian. He used to be a orc battalion commander and was sent to kill the Goddess Lurue (Queen of the Unicorns and mount to Mielikki). When Grom's batallion found her grove a fierce battle broke out between orcs and talking beasts. Lurue stabbed Grom through the heart with her horn almost killing him. With his last breath she made a deal with him, she would save him if he would send his battalion away, turn from his evil path and follow her. He vowed his loyalty and she healed him. The battalion was dismissed and Grom was stripped of his orcish command. He was then told by Lurue to go wander the world for a time and learn what it's like to walk in someone else's shoes. Lurue uses Grom as her personal emissary and speaks to him in his head (it's his quark and it's like he's talking awkwardly on a bluetooth ear piece). He is usually sent with adventurers to help them on their journey. He's been teleported across Ferun many times to aid...See more

AWESOME RESOURCE! I can't wait to give this to my players. I have already planted it for them to find. One question, though: for the OLUS VERITIS (Truth Potion), the recipient must make a Constitution save or be compelled to answer all questions. What is the save DC? Thanks for sharing this amazing resource!

Hi Mallory, thank you for the great review and the question! I can't wait to hear how you're players use the guide and what potions they end up making! Also, I love that you've planned for your adventurers to find it! Don't forget to throw some of the harvesting items at them as a way to reward their potion making efforts. Now with regards to the Olus Veritis (Truth Potion) I had originally left this up to the DM, but I think it would be a good idea to put a DC there to make it more clear and balanced. I would say with this being a moderately difficult potion to brew and 600gp price it should have a DC of 15. So a medium Con save. I would also say if you only got half of the potion in the mouth of the recipient that you reduce the duration of the effects by half, and keep the con save the same. Hope that helps. I'll update the guide and upload it today if you want to re-download a copy. Thanks again for reaching out and happy adventuring!

Thank you so much! I wasn't sure what mechanics to use for the save. The ranger found the guide in a bag of holding in a harpy's lair. It was in there along with some other items and two already made potions. I just described their color and smell and during a lull in the session, she used the guide descriptions to identify the pre-made potions (one of which was a truth potion)! It was a happy DM moment! Thanks again for making this awesome guide! I heard about it on the Pocket Mimic podcast and I know it's going to be so fun!

Great call out! I just realized that I used Supreme healing as the Heal spell, and not the 10d4 + 20 that the PHB states. Give me a couple days to think through this, and I'll update the table and potions. I might have them all be a mix of the base healing potion, and rename the Heal potion. I'll get back to you on this. Thank you for calling it out.

Thanks again for calling this out. We decided to redo how the Healing potions showed up. You now use just the Healwell fruit to create any of the healing potions. I added in the DMG potion table to show how this is done. Basically you use 14,28,42,56 harvested fruits to brew any of those potions (healing, greater, superior, supreme). We also made it so you can find this vine in All regions since healing potions are so needed. Also, since this edit took two of my potion slots away, I also added in a climb and speed potion. Seems like they were missing and could be fun to have. Take a look, and let me know what you think.

We got some great feedback so far. Lilfi made some great callouts about item weight, Sell price of individual plants, and what does # to Brew mean. I added weights to the items, and "Plant Sell Price" to each plant in case you want to just sell the individual plants to an herbalist. Then I updated the Brew potions section to:

To brew a potion, you must have the required number of plants as stated in the # to Brew section of the Potion and Oil table. Potions are brewed in towns only. The equipment to brew them can be found in an alchemist, potion, or herbalist shop. Not all potions are created equal. Ask your DM how many potions you can make during your stay in town.

Does that make more sense?

Thanks for this great resource. I've been flummoxed about how exactly to create potions equitably, and I can't wait to start using this in my campaign tomorrow.

I would remove the requirement, however, that players have to be in a town to brew potions (of healing), considering that it states in the PHB that the herbalism kit "contains a variety of instruments such as clippers, mortar and pestle, and pouches and vials used by herbalists to create remedies and potions." It is explicit that proficiency with the kit is required to create potions of healing. Maybe having a mechanic where it takes more time if you are brewing them outside of a town would make sense.

Aubrey,

You make a great point about brewing on the road. I've actually already done this for my campaigns and let players brew one potion per long rest, or two if they have the Insta-Boil Pot. I've liked this change to the rules I built, and so do the players. Go ahead and allow it for you're players and I'll try to get this updated. Thanks for the feedback!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
