For those unafraid of death, adventure is a profitable profession, paying gold for feats of blood and heroism.

What, then, do adventurers spend their money on? Where can they part with their hard-earned coin? And, should they track one down, what goods could a given merchant be expected to have?

Initially conceived of as an expansion to the Fortresses, Temples, & Strongholds ruleset, the Traders & Merchants rules option includes rules and inventories for 28 different types of merchant across five different merchant qualities, and includes rules for randomly generating and adding distinct personalities to each.

The profoundly fortunate (or unfortunate) adventurer may even encounter elusive Legendary merchants! Bargain with the fey, make deals with the devil himself, or exchange coin for items displaced across space and time!

Whatever your fancy, these merchants have it in stock. Take a look, and browse, barter, and buy to your heart’s content.

what does the ever tag on many of the items mean? do they never restock even with a different trader?

If a player buys that particular item, it never restocks, yeah.

It's mainly there to prevent players from buying multiples of powerful magical items, and keeping magical items distinct.

It says "Failed to load PDF document" when I try to open it. Even in Acrobat Reader. A suggestion for a fix would be awesome.

I tried to download it just now, and the first time I did, it cut out at about 6.4/10 mb. It's a large file, and I wouldn't be surprised if the DM's Guild was having problems with that.

I refreshed my browser and tried downloading again. After a bit of a lag hiccup, it allowed me to download the file just fine, and the file opened properly in Chrome for me once it was on my computer.

Honestly, I'd recommend refreshing and trying again? I'm guessing you experienced a similar hiccup in the download and didn't end up getting the whole file. If that doesn't work, let me know, and I can just e-mail you a link.

Lots of different people, you can see most of them in the artist's section on the right (character limit keeps me from listing all of them), or attributed in the credits at the end of the product in full.

I like to use public domain art for my content here, as it has a really solid feel to it while (naturally) being free and legal to use. The only drawback being I can't use work published after 1923, but that's not as much of a hindrance if I do the proper research first.

Who did the art for this supplement? It's great!

A lot of people, all pre-1923, so it's public domain. You can see all the titles and artists in the credits section at the very end.

Hi,

I wanted to let you know that I included this in my monthly roundup of the best new products on DMs Guild. I'm really happy to see it hit Silver - it's a great product, and that's well deserved! If you're interested, you can find the post on www.loottheroom.uk.

Cheers!

Would it be OK if I use some of your content to supplement my Random Resource spreadsheet? (http://www.dmsguild.com/product/209264/Random-Resource)

Maybe. What would you be looking to use?

Before I started hosting on the DM's Guild, my answer was usually more "sure, take whatever you need, just as long as I get credited." My stuff is more product-for-sale than personal project now, though, so I'd like a clearer picture of what'd be used before I give the go-ahead.

Drop me an e-mail and I'll go into it a bit more (Gadget2020 at hotmail.com) - it just seems that tables like this are perfect to be put into a random generator.

My first thought when downloading this file was blimey, this needs some optimisation! 22.8 mb is a lot for a 32 page document.

Turns out optimisation is not the problem (or not the big part of it). The dimensions of this pdf are LUDICROUSLY huge. I checked the file's properties in Acrobat and it says the page size is 24.11 x 34.11 inch.

To put this in perspective, the 5th edition core books are just shy of US Letter which is itself a little smaller than A4.

The pages of this file, meanwhile, are LARGER than an A1 sheet (which can fit exactly 8 A4 pages).

Unless you're expecting people to print these pages as posters for their wall at their local print shop, please scale it down to a more appropriate size!

Good point, this.

The file size is the result of me fighting with the PDF's compression settings, fixing it in a stupid way (just increase the file size, that solves everything), and moving on long, long ago.

It hasn't been a problem until I had to make a 30+ page document with my terrible settings, as even a small size problem present in a 5 page document gets blown up monumentally when it's expanded to 30 pages.

Rest assured, I'm working on it. Lowering the dpi from 300 to 150 while slightly modifying the document's proportions, and saving the individual files as PNG-8 rather than PNG-24, seem to be doing the trick with a very minimal loss of clarity. Expect a fix for this today or tomorrow.

Fixed it, reduced the file size from 22 mb to 10 mb with only a minimal loss of image quality.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
