The Sunless Citadel CRD

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The Sunless Citadel Combat Reference Document was created for DMs planning to run The Sunless Citadel from Tales from the Yawning Portal. The material contained herein has three purposes: (1) to speed combat by eliminating the need to flip back and forth between pages within the same book, (2) to organize the information about the reinforcement movements of creatures within the Sunless Citadel, and (3) to apply monster variants and adjustments to save you the time of having to do this yourself. The game is better when combat is organized, exciting, and quick. More dice rolling, less page flipping!

This reference assumes you have a Monster Manual (MM) and Tales from the Yawning Portal (TYP).

I found this extremely useful in running The Sunless Citadel. It did what it promised: eliminate a bunch of page-flipping.

Nope. Hobgoblins are absent. Skeletons are absent. The document claims to be a one spot to go to for all creature stats. While this is helpful, it is not complete. Please update with both sets of skeletons, giant rats, Calcryx, Durnn, Hobgoblins, Belak and any other creatures. I hoped buying this would mean less flipping between 2 sources. (TYP, MM). Now I've got *most* of the creatures in one source, but now I have to refer to 3 sources.

Not happy.

This document never claims to contain all the creature stats. The title page and description both say its first purpose is to eliminate page flipping within the same source, not to eliminate the need to look at more than one source. In the preview, the example in the first paragraph after the title page illustrates how it is to be used and includes having multiple sources open at the same time. The idea is that once you have your books open and the appropriate page from the CRD in front of you, you can run the entire combat encounter without flipping pages. Page 2 of the preview has a table that states what stat blocks are included.

I added the hobgoblin and Durnn. The giant rat and diseased giant rat were already there. Though it was never my intent to include all the stat blocks, I'll take a look at others I might add in some strategic places.

I added the bugbear, skeleton, and troll and made notes about their variants. I also added Belak (human druid), so the entire final encounter can be run with pages 11-12 from the CRD without having to refer to the MM at all. Each encounter can be run using either the CRD or the MM - you no longer have to use both at the same time for any encounter.

The following stat blocks are not included in the CRD, but the encounters that include them can be run by opening the Monster Manual to a single entry: fire snake (salamander entry), mephit (ice and steam), shadow, swarm of rats (disperses after one round), and white dragon wyrmling (Calcryx).

The goblin Grenl is 1st level spellcaster with 2 level 1 slots. Giving her 4 slots and moving her up unbalances the encounter against the party. Already parties are having trouble with the encounter. 3 Hobgoblins plus boss hobgoblin plus goblin shaman...

Yusdrayl the kobold shaman is the 2nd level spellcaster with four slots.

Also, is Durnn in here?

Not sure about your comment referencing giving 4 slots to Grenl - she has 2 slots in both my CRD and the source material. I gave Yusdrayl 3 slots since that's what a second level spellcaster should have. The 4 slots in the TYP are an error (probably a holdover from translating the adventure from 3E to 5E).

If you think Grenl is too much to have her in the encounter with Durnn, then try one of these options: have her enter area 40 and help the goblins there or have her hang back and attack Durnn at an opportune moment (since she hates him).

Durnn's not in there, but I'll add him. I'll throw in the hobgoblin stat block as well.

Would this work as a 5e conversion to the original module?

The Sunless Citadel in Tales from the Yawning Portal (hardcover) is the 5E conversion of the original adventure. You need Tales from the Yawning Portal to utilize this reference document and run The Sunless Citadel 5E.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
