Lords of the Nexus

Lords of the Nexus is a campaign framework designed for 5th edition Dungeons & Dragons. It is not a fully fledged adventure/campaign but contains the building blocks for both.

You Can Use Lords of the Nexus For...

... Crawling through hexes

Lords of the Nexus provides a system for running Hexcrawl-type campaigns with 5th edition Dungeons & Dragons. The system relies heavily on random rolls to generate dynamic content; neither the DM nor the players can know exactly what lies in the wilderness.
The system is aimed towards DMs with a good grasp of the rules already, who aren't looking for a gift wrapped, ready-made package, but rather something more like the raw ingredients – and recipe – for their campaign.

... Exploring the untamed wilderness

In Lords of the Nexus, players take on the role of daring Explorers, who set out from a wilderness outpost to see what hidden secrets can be uncovered in the area, bring back valuable resources to their base, and discover portals to other planes of existence – the most valued of all rewards. Gathered resources go to upgrading their home base, which allows them to get better equipment, research select topics, scout out the area faster, and travel farther before needing to rest, among other things.
The system can be used for different kinds of exploration-based campaigns in any campaign setting. It is well suited for handling warring factions within a single area, or you can concentrate on fighting the ravenous beasts that roam the lands.

... Setting up a game with minimal effort

The example campaign outlined in the document is almost ready to play as is, but it's only one of the many things you could do with Lords of the Nexus. Whatever you decide to do, the system will guide you through the process of setting up your campaign, and often very little preparation is needed ahead of time, as content can be generated on-the-fly.

... Playing on a virtual tabletop

The system is especially well suited for play on a virtual tabletop such as Roll20, as you can streamline the content generation tasks into just a couple or even a single macro. I provide some tips & tricks for how you can get the most out of Lords of the Nexus with Roll20, including some example macros.

Lords of the Nexus is currently available in pdf-format, which includes a fully linked table of contents, bookmarks, and page references within the text for easy navigation. There are also a few more-or-less printer friendly A4-size handouts at the end of the document.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
