The Spiritualist - A 5e Custom Class

An original character class designed for D&D 5th edition.

This class draws loose inspiration from the Baten Kaitos video game series for the base ideas surrounding it. The class itself involves an individual whose soul is joined with that of an ethereal spirit to gain access to magical powers and martial prowess. The spirit serves as both a kindred soul and driving force for the player character as they adventure the world with the spirit at their side. The bond formed with a guardian spirit grants a spiritualist insight into an unexplored plane known as the spirit world and its residents.

Included alongside the full base class for this character are three different archetypes of spiritualists based on the nature of origin for their guardian spirit: Godling, Ancient Warrior, and Primordial Fragment.

Godlings are fragments of now-dead and forgotten gods who take up residence within creatures to regain some of their former strength. They bestow their vast knowledge upon the player character to grant them an edge in combat alongside a variety of magical elements to expose weaknesses in your foes.

The Ancient Warrior was a once proud and powerful warrior of times past who departed the world with deeds left undone. They serve a physically empowering role for their player characters providing them with enhanced martial prowess while enhancing their senses and reflexes.

Primordial fragments are shed portions of the powerful and ancient Primordials sent to the material plane with a mission for which they were granted their existence. They bestow their player characters with a greater influence over minor spirits permeating the planes allowing them to even manifest these spirits temporarily for greater control over the battlefield.

This character class was created with the intentions of providing more options to players open to using homebrew content within their 5e campaigns. Consultation with peers has been conducted with this class, but playtesting has not been performed yet and any who decide to use this class should remember to keep this in mind when playing it. I am open to any feedback regarding this class, both from those just reading and those who decided to give this class a spin in a campaign. If you have any questions about vagueness regarding this class I will be happy to answer them when I have an opportunity to. If any points are brought up regarding balance or vagueness that I feel need to be addressed, I will update the PDF when I can to hopefully deal with the issue.

Most importantly though, I hope any players who are interested in this class enjoy their time with it.

I'm really liking the idea behind this class, but I found a small problem. I can't seem to find anything under any of the minor spirit abilities that dictates how a player can regain an exhausted minor spirit. Is it supposed to be a thing that comes back on a long rest? Is it something that is basically gone forever until you reach level 14? It would really help for something like that to be included under the minor spirits class feature.

Hi Stephen,
Thank you for your interest in the class. As for your question, it is actually already mentioned under the rather meaty section regarding minor spirits in the second-last paragraph. "All minor spirits are no longer exhausted once you complete a short or long rest."
In other words, should you ever exhaust a minor spirit all you need to do to "regain" it is to complete a short or long rest.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
