Discerning Merchant's Price Guide

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The Discerning Merchant's Price Guide is an organizational tool for magic items & pricing. It groups magic items together into categorical tables: melee weapons, armor, staffs, rings, and so on, similarly to how items were laid out in 3.5e. This should help DMs know exactly where to look and what their options are for handing out a given item. A reference column for book and page number for each item is also included, along with rarity, attunement requirements, and my own favorite feature: suggested item costs. Gone are costs that range from 5,000gp all the way to 50,000gp; you've now got a concrete number to start with that you can quickly adjust to suit the economy of the area at hand.

Version 5.0 includes the following new features:

  • 99 magic items added to the tables
  • Weighted d100 columns next to every table to quickly roll a random item
  • Tables and tools for DMs needing to quickly roll up their own discerning merchant. This includes random tables for (a) shop names and significant details; (b) the merchant themselves, with their current mood, basic personality, and quirk; and (c) the economy of the shop, from its gold-on-hand to items in stock, from price modifications to what sort of bartering works best against the merchant.
  • Azza Vice, a sample merchant made with the included tables

Updates for Version 5.0 bring the document up to date as of July 2022.

Hi, love this. However, is there any plans to put in the missing items from the Candlekeep Mysteries, which is listed as included by no items are there. Also, any plans to add in of the other missing source books?

Hi Jonathan, there are currently no plans for further updates. I won't completely rule out the possibility of a "final" edition once One D&D is out and it's clear 5e won't receive further material, but I make no promises at this time. Hopefully the doc will still prove useful to you in its current state.

Is there a good wealth by level to use with this? I love the pricing ability, but I have no idea how much gold my players should have.

This is a strongly subjective topic, as it'll depend both on your DMing style and the tone/magic level of your campaign. Personally, I come at things from a more OSR mindset of "they have as much gold as it makes sense for them to have" rather than "balancing" it, per se. But for the sake of a rule of thumb for a level-scaling approach, I'd suggest that the total value of a PC's magic equipment might equal (Level*Level)*500gp, i.e. level squared times 500. This means a level 1 PC might have 500gp to get an uncommon item, and a level 20 PC would have accrued 200,000gp worth of equipment. To be clear, this just a suggestion done off basic math, not some rigorously playtested algorithm, and your mileage may vary.

Any sign of an update beyond 5.0 for this?

Possible, but unlikely. I think if anything the most likely addition would be some sort of rubric for estimating item value for any given magic item. I do not guarantee such an update, however.

Hi, I'm not able to provide old versions due to some content that had to be removed. However, feel free to email me at feyrunelabs@gmail.com if there's a specific item or two you're looking for appraisals of (you'll get an autoreply, but I'll still see it).

Is the DMPG document accessible to screen reader software?

Hello. Does the $2.99 price include printing rights? Not for mass production. Just if I wanted staples to print a high quality version?

If not is there somewhere I can buy a printed copy?

You are certainly very welcome to print the document out for personal use, and a printer-friendly black & white PDF is included.

Hi, is there a reason that the Candlekeep Mysteries items were excluded?

That's an oversight, actually, as I certainly intended to include its magic items. I will make a note to ensure those get added in the next update. Thanks for catching that.

We love using this Guide. it is very useful, thanks for making it! Can't wait for Candlekeep Mysteries to be added. I have players inquiring about the price of the serpent scale armor.

Hi, just curious if there was a reason all of the Explorer's Guide to Wildemount content was removed in Version 5.0? (Similarly why Call of the Netherdeep wasn't added.)

Because the DM's Guild (unfortunately) has policies about what settings content can reference. So while those items were previously included by error, you could still reference v4.1 if you need a price for an item in EGW.

Are items from "Acquisitions Incorporated" also covered? I ask because some object present in 4.1 is not present in 5.0

Hi Ryan, I've owned a copy for a while and it's been updated a few times for free like when Tasha's came out, you just download the latest version from here, I just check this page after a new book comes out to see if there's been any updates

Is there a way to get this in plain text or a sheet that a screen reading program could use? I play with some friends who are visually impaired, and apparently PDFs don't work right with their text-to-voice software.

Glad to hear there's an update coming soon! Out of curiosity, will it include the new items from Fizban's? Appreciate the work, my group is constantly wanting to buy magic items so this has been a literal lifesaver!

Hello there! Just a quick question. Will there be an update to the price guide soon because of the new books that have come out (aka Fizban and Strixhaven)? Also, has it ever been thought of doing another guide that compiles all of the currently present magic items into their respective tables?

This is a great resource, and I’m glad to have it for my upcoming Eberron campaign. One question - how did you decide to put tattoos in with scrolls? I would have thought that as reusable ‘items’ tattoos might fit better with wands (very short, pointy wands that you absorb into your skin?)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
