High Forest Factbook

Suggested Price $4.99

A massive forest stands in the middle of Faerun. Easily accessible from the Swordcoast and yet.. where is the official sourcebooks for what lays within?

This book is intended for DM's wanting to run adventures within High Forest.  It is the result of quite a bit of research on official WotC supplements so should align pretty closely with other products released for the 5th edition setting.

Included within are:

  • Detailed history of the empires and struggles within the forest
  • Over 60 locations from earlier official publications marked on map with descriptions.
  • Multiple plot hooks provided for each region of the forest
  • Traveling encounters customized for each region
  • 15 new monsters (converted from previous editions)

Contains support information for associated modules M1 The Menace of Merric and M2 Raiders of Reitheillaethor

I really like this book, and I expect I'll be getting a lot of use out of it. I was wondering if you could cite your source(s) for me on Morndinvuddrrin. I really want to know more about this location, and I'm having trouble finding anything on the internet.

Sure, that is obscure and there isn't much detail about it.

On page 28 of the TSR Supplement "Silver Marches" it describes an unnamed abandoned dwarven settlement in the Lost Peaks. Many players speculate that this is Morndinvuddrrin.

The online fan pages further talk about this: https://www.worldanvil.com/w/forgotten-realms-phork37/a/high-forest-location

And its also referenced in the GMBinder fanpage: https://www.gmbinder.com/share/-L5EtGi0gjWpwWzlzlt3/-L5Pr81jcpqyOBSpdx6b#:~:text=,place%20the%20moment%20they%20died

What a great resource, at exactly the right time! I am starting a D&D5e campaign, and the Gold Coast material was too big (and didn't have enough maps), so the information in the High Forest Factbook is perfect.
I originally downloaded it for free, but the content and quality of this was SO GOOD I simply didn't feel right downloading it for free.
Kudos to the folks that made this. I even bought their adventure module in this setting, the Menace of Merric! (A module which has the awesome look and feel of an old school TSR AD&D module).

Cool book. The Centaurs are missing in the writeup for "Government" starting on page 8. Not sure if that's a mistake, but there is little of centaurs in the book, I thought I'd find something on that page listing the various factions.

Hey thanks, I didn't find any info on centaur government or rulers specific to High Forest. I marked out their territory because of the generalized comments I'd find that said "Centaurs roam these woods". I figured since Centaurs are intelligent and tribal, they would have territory they defended but there isn't canon lore that says anything useful. I personally play them as less ambitious Huns. Nomadic horse archers.

Another question... is this all actual canon stuff, or did you add some homebrew elements? Like the village of Merric for example, is that yours, or is that a canon location?

Also, here's some cool stuff from the 2e Savage Frontier boxed set....

Centaurs: There is one large, clanlike tribe of High Forest
centaurs that makes its home on the plateaus, cliffs, and isolated glades among the Sisters waterfalls at the headwaters of
the Unicorn Run. The tribe was once one clan led by one
leader, Motril Thewstrong, but his recent passing in 1366 has
nearly split the tribe into two clans, each camp led by one of
his twin sons. There is no strife between the two brothers, but
each sees a different direction for Clan Hoofmight.
Motril the Younger is an aggressive, warlike leader like his
father, while his brother Naryath is a more diplomatic,
thoughtful guide for their people. The split came with the
Mistmasters call to arms against Hellgate...See more

Wow! thanks! I have the boxed set and thought I'd scoured it for any relevant lore. I will absolutely update that next time I version the High Forest Factbook.

Funny that you spotted Merric. EVERYTHING on the map came from a canon book (not including the forgotten realms novels... no time to read those). I added Non-canonical Merric to the map so that if someone stole this material.. I could have that as a sort of watermark. I did my absolute best to only have things that came from TSR/WoTC.

Does this have any information on Elaacrimalicros and the DR he attacked the Star Mounts colony of aarakocra?

On page 13 it mentions that he did but not what date. I never did see a timeline on when that happened but since it was discussed as "recently" in the 3rd edition Forgotten Realms campaign book, I'm guessing it was shortly before DR 1370. If you'd like more info on that, there is a good archived log about it at

Thank you so much! This changes some things for a character of mine.
I honestly thought it was more recent to the beginning of 5e, but it being almost a hundred years prior to the 1490s makes me question if nearby villages would have any knowledge of the aarakocra or the colony.

Am I mistaken, or is the section on the Winterbole Forest (Southern edge, between Centaur Runs and The Old Trees) missing?

Well I'll be darned! This has been out for years and you are the first to notice! I didn't add a section for it because I didn't have any sites of interest in that region. I'll have to go back and see if I can find something of interest in there.

Thanks for catching that!

It won't let me review yet (have to wait a day)...but I am very surprised at how awesome this book is. The High Forest always seemed like it should be a fascinating place...but the entry in the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide is very brief. This has great maps, brief entries on the locations, plot hooks, etc. It really helps flesh out the High Forest. Thanks! I'll drop a review when I am allowed.

I think your work is very good and VERY useful BUT I didn't know that I had to own other books to reference the monsters. I ASSUMED (silly me..) that this referenced the CORE mm only BECAUSE I didn't see any warning that I needed to own other books. Unless I am mistaken you may want to mention that in your description. PERHAPS you can suggest CORE MM SUBSTITUTES for those of us who are running without the other volumes (yea, I can do this BUT I did buy your book so I wouldn't HAVE to) I realize there are quite a few. These other books are pricey. Even the PDFs. I wont pay what they are asking for a PDF. I will perhaps get the physical books someday.

BTW...Your maps are OUTSTANDING! Great USABLE detail! Exceptional work.

I see your point, I am an admitted monster junkie so like to have the variety in my random tables.

For anyone wondering, I have creatures from the Kobold Press "Tome of Beasts" book. It's a great resource (as is their Creature Codex).

Thanks on the map compliment. :)

Hi. Great book, with lots of information. Very useful.
Question. Would you have a higher resolution of the maps on page 4 that you could share with us? That would be great!

Thanks!

Specifically, I am thinking about the faction influences on page 8 and the regions on page 11. I am running a west-marches style game in the high forest so finding this is so wonderful. I'm definitely gonna pay you for this book later since I am so appreciative. I would like the others too, but those are the ones that I really really want.

I put the regions and influence maps up. The only ones I haven't are the village maps, they're purely homebrew and there are way better map drawers on Reddit.

Great book, I agree with the review about obvious use of the FR wiki for content leaving a lot of the more recent updates in SKT and SCAG out of this, but certainly that's hardly a stopping point for any DM. The backgrounds are a bit hard to read as they're darker, consider lightening them up.

Thanks! I'm certainly interested in what areas people would most like to see more info on. Chelimber might be do-able. I was considering doing the High Moor or Greypeak Mountains and could include it in those.

Thanks for the feedback, if you want to help out I'd sure appreciate if you'd review it. It gets tons of downloads but no one seems to add a review of it.

Cheers!

I haven't had anyone else comment they are having troubles with it, I just downloaded it myself to check and it opens ok for me. Maybe downloading a fresh copy of acrobat reader? If you message me an email address to send it to, I'll just email you a copy I've verified works. Sorry you're having troubles with it.

This is one of the best and most useful "factbooks" I have ever come across. I would love to see more of this type, perhaps detailing the Lurkwood or other areas of the Forgotten Realms that haven't gotten much attention. Regardless, this book is amazing and I would highly recommend it for any DM, whether they're running a game in the FR setting or not.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
