Dungeon Module J3: Prison of Eternal Torture

ADD TO WISHLIST >

PRISON OF ETERNAL TORTURE is from the Just Because (”J”) series; like others in the series, it is meant to stand on its own and is a complete 5TH EDITION DUNGEONS & DRAGONS adventure. The recommended number of players is four to five, with levels starting at five.

Story: After staying a night in the city Leoben, you find you have been mysteriously poisoned and are told you will die in seven days. Try as you might you can't cure yourselves and the locals tell you that the old wizard Urthadar can help you. They tell you he dwells on the swampy island of Kisaga just south of the city. Gathering supplies you make your way there.

Adventure Synopsis: The players are to seek Urthadar for a cure. Along the way, they find they have been tricked and are to be sacrificed in order to hold an unstoppable monster. They must choose between death (holding the monster) or kill Urthadar and escape (freeing it).

  • Successfully play tested.
  • Contains new monsters and items for the adventure.
  • Contains background information, referee’s notes, player map, Dungeon Master map, and complete descriptions of items, spells, and monsters.
  • Contains a print-friendly version of the adventure.

-Disclaimer: If your players are unused to hack-proof dilemmas, they may find this adventure very frustrating. However, those who know how to use their wits should find it an intriguing balance of action and problem-solving.

Some might think this adventure is too hard and unfair. In truth, this is on purpose and there are certain encounters that a level 5 player cannot overcome. However, the adventure forewarns against any threats and dangers in a fair manner. I made this adventure hard so that players would think before jumping into a deadly situation. My overall goal was if you do stupid things you die.

About the Author: I started D&D with the classic adventure White Plume Mountain and loved it. I enjoyed the simple formula and the way we just jumped into it. The quest lasted a few nights, and we felt accomplished as players when we finished it. My ultimate goal was to capture what I loved so much with that module and classic modules in general.

Prison of Eternal Torture was made to emulate a classic Dungeons & Dragons adventure in the best way I could. Obviously, these are 5th Edition rules, and the pages inside follow that formula, but I've emulated the covers to classic modules, even made the traditional blue and white maps, and added in old school pictures to try to enhance the vintage feel to a degree. Like a classic D&D module there's a little background info, and then you're put straight into the adventure and go from there.

Prison of Eternal Torture is meant to be played as an adventure anyone can jump into and have fun. Finally, I would recommend having a pretty mixed group of characters. For example, a group of fighters will not be able to get far due to needing magic users, divine users, and rogues to complete encounters. I've tried to structure this adventure so that everyone gets a chance to shine.

HAVE FUN!!!

This adventure takes a little inspiration from here and here. Be sure to check them out.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
