CCC-BMG-16 ELM 1-1 The Sage of Cormanthor

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The grain has rotted in the town of Elmwood, which means people might starve, businesses and banks might fail, and endanger the town’s already-precarious existence. Brave adventurers are needed to travel through the wild forest to seek the advice of the Sage of Cormanthor.
A four-hour adventure for 5th - 10th level characters

Getting ready to run this remote. As noted below, the Ancient Elven Defenses map is cut about in half from what I can tell. From the description, just make another ravine wall to the South of the Ruined Shrine, and know there is another teleporter (Pink Star if you're looking at the print version.) that is about 60' to the other end of the ravine (this way the creatures can reach it easily.)

Thanks authors!

Hey, I ran this module recently, had great fun! However, according to the map the location of the sage's hut is close to the river to the east - what prevents the party from simply taking a boat down there and skipping most of the forest travel AND the first major encounter?
Still took me 4.5 hours to run it so not too bad, but I was wondering why everyone insist they travel through a dangerous and madness-infested forest when they could possibly skip that.

On P36 "Ancient Elven Defenses" it looks as though the bottom of the map is missing, as there is what looks to be an arrow and annotation bracket coming out from the bottom?

Don't know if this was addressed already, but I ran this last night and the "print friendly" version differs from the non-print friendly in the version I downloaded. The non-print friendly still excludes the Black Pudding stats and lists different DM rewards. Otherwise, great module!

Neither the map of the town of Elmwood (o. 34) nor the appendix "Elmwood at a glance" (pp. 25-28) include any mention of the Mystic Grove Brewery. The text of the adventure indicates that it is located "just south of the grove of Eldath and near the temple of Chauntea" (p. 9), where the map shows the "Druid Brewery". Not helpful.

Author here - Sorry about that. Due to our partnership with a real life brewery for the premiere, we renamed the brewery at the brewer's request because their beer was named "The Druid". I'll amend the maps in the next update. I'm sorry that this reduced your enjoyment of the adventure.

Great stuff from BMG as always.
2 things, They forgot to include the stats for black pudding and they need a map of Elmwood handout that doesn't list the key encounters.

otherwise, a lot of fun!

Author here - Good catch about the pudding. I'll ask how we change that.

The map on page 34 is encounter neutral. It just lists the names of various buildings in town.

Very nicely done module, looking forward to running it for my group tomorrow.
Really like the faction hooks at the end, just the right size to print out and roll up into little scrolls to give to my players for a slightly more immersive hook than "so, you suddenly decided to go to this town for some reason".
I am curious about the DM rewards though, they seem low for a 4-hour tier 2 adventure. Was this a mistake, or intended?

Glad you like the hooks. You're right, the DM rewards do seem low. I will look into that.

I am poised to buy this, but want to know first:
What is the Target Adventure Level?
Are the player and DM rewards correct as per the table in the ALDMG?
What's the magic item? (Joking!)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
