ADD TO WISHLIST >

A conversion for the classic AD&D S3 Expedition to the Barrier Peaks

This complete conversion balances the adventure for four player characters of 8th level which is similar to the originals “An adventure for characters levels 8-12”. NPCs, numbers of creatures, and other encounter details have been modified where necessary to accommodate the appropriate degree of challenge.

Included are full 5E stat blocks for several new creatures and NPCs:

  • Android Surgeon
  • Auromvorax
  • Police Robot
  • Shedu
  • Eye of the Deep
  • Vegeypygmies
  • The dreaded frogehmoth
  • Trapper (CR 6)
  • … and many more!

In addition, all the original technological treasures have been converted for 5th edition gaming:

  • Blaster
  • Needler
  • And the legendary Power Armour
  • … and many more!

You will need a copy of S3 Expedition to the Barrier Peaks (1e) to run the converted adventure.

Thanks for doing this. Some comments for your future products:
Please do the following in the future:
Larger fonts. This is incredibly hard to read on paper.
There are no page numbers, but there is an index with page numbers.
Please skip the one and a half inch margins. It just wastes a bunch of paper.
Thanks again.

Hi Jay, thanks for the feedback. I uploaded v1.1 which has thiner margins (chopped 1.25 inches off) and page numbers. I left the fonts as is, as increasing them will require a full reformat of the pdf but will keep it in mind for future releases.

Everyone purchasing this should understand that you have to have the original module. These are just the conversion notes. That should probably be anticipated by the low price, but should still probably be made clear from the item description.

It clearly states this in the description:

"You will need a copy of S3 Expedition to the Barrier Peaks (1e) to run the converted adventure."

Originally this was a full conversion which included the original adventure, but WOTC removed it so had to cut it down to only conversion notes. To see that heavily modified version go here: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/200488/When-a-Star-Falls

How long does this adventure run? If I drop it into a sandbox, should I expect it to overtake my original content for several levels?

Yeah, it's a bit of a megadungeon. Six 4 hour sessions depending how your players play.

Thanks! I actually did a “return to the barrier peaks” which is a complete end-to-end conversion, update and faithful rewrite. These conversion notes come from that product.

Yes. Thank you indeed. How many 8th level characters would you say? And what do you think is the overall difficulty? Hard? Deadly?

I would say its hard but not deadly. Suitable for four level 8s or six level 6.

THANK YOU! This was to be my next conversion project! Question; what are the symbols at the bottom of the pages and do you have a conversion guide for them?

You are welcome. It's an Easter egg. Highlight them in Word (or similar word processor) and change it to a readable font :)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
