DDAL00-01 Window to the Past

When a Thayan research expedition returns from the Glacier of the White Wyrm with only two survivors that are reduced to whispering about an ancient pyramid under the ice, perhaps it is time to discover just what scares the life out of a nation of necromancers.

A 4-Hour Adventure for 5th – 10th, 11th – 16th, or 17th – 20th Level Characters

This adventure's code was originally DDAO-01 - part of the "Author Only" program. Due to it's presence, I was able to attend dozens of gamedays, retail locations, and conventions across the United States. I ran nearly 100 tables of just this one adventure (never mind the dozens of other adventures for my regular local group and other adventures upon organizer request), and in the course of doing so met an unbelievable number of AWESOME players, DMs, and organizers.

Inside this download you can find not only an adventure that can be as fast as 4 hours or as long as 12 hours (the longest I ran it in one sitting!), but you will also see some custom art that was commissioned for this adventure, brand-new maps, and designer's notes on how to run this adventure at your selected tier.

As a bonus, I've also included the raw map files for use with Campaign Cartographer 3. Feel free to customize them as you see fit - and remember that across the 100 tables I ran, each table made an impact. I believe that this comment will make more sense when you read the adventure!

Happy gaming, folks, and let those dice roll!

- Alan

PS: seriously, check out my artists John Latta and Ian Wallace. Great people and super excited to work on these kinds of projects :)

How are the multiple damage tags (fire and necrotic) from the mythal handled when it comes to resistances, immunities and vulnerabilities?

Mythals are extremely high-level magic. If a mythal refers to two or more damage types, the character must be resistant (etc) to -all- the listed types or they take effect as normal.

While an interesting concept, I think the Enmity of Thay story award has some issues in terms of execution.

It's something of a headache logistically:
1. Every downtime day spent now has to be accounted for in front of a DM
2. Every adventure completed has the potential to be randomly extended by adding in an extra fight at the end. (When we often have difficulty wrapping stuff up within the assigned timeslot anyway.)
3. The stats on a Red Wizard aren't provided anywhere as far as I can tell, and normal AL adventures don't even expect the DM to own the Monster Manual.
4. If these extra enemies are killed, it's unclear whether extra XP should be awarded and whether they carry any gold or other treasure.
5. It's unclear whether they should kill a PC in a way that prevents raise dead from being used. If not, should killing a character that's later raised remove the story award?
6. If the Thayans are bought off by...See more

What is the season for this adventure? Like is this part of Rage of Demons?

as its ddal-00; not part of any season per say, seasons currently fall in DDEX-01/02/03 thru current nomenclature DDAL-04/05(SKT.)

Correct. This technically takes place after the events of season 2 (Elemental Evil), but can be enjoyed without the players having experienced those adventures. By using a season code of '00' it is not considered to be part of any specific season.

I played this as a 15 Evoker - at Queen City Conquest '16 at Tier 3, run by the man himself; It was a blast, I highly recommend playing or running it. I have plans to run this myself in the near future, but I would rather run T3/T4 as It seems a waste to use it on lower levels considering how much content is already out there for T2...YMMV.

My t3 tables seem to really enjoy themselves, and the handful of t4 tables have been... well, excited to say the least. Good luck! (and thanks for playing it with me already!)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
