DDAL05-07 Chelimber's Descent (5e)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Deep in the Marsh of Chelimber lie the ruins of a great wizard’s tower. SEER has received intelligence, which she imparts via her emissary Hsing, that deep beneath the marsh in the remains of an old tower is knowledge of older magics.

This could be just what Parnast needs to resist the onslaught of Bad Fruul and his armies!

A Two-Hour Adventure for 1st-4th Level Characters

We (Wizards) recognize that some of the legacy content available on this website does not reflect the values of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise today. Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice that were commonplace in American society at that time. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. This content is presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Dungeons & Dragons teaches that diversity is a strength, and we strive to make our D&D products as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This part of our work will never end.

Purchased by our local store for AL. Ran it for a group and they loved the puzzles and had some great 'a-ha' moments as they were figuring it out. Lots of great RP opportunities in it, and great to see a module focused on exploration!

I gave the whole document a quick read and thought it was going to be wonderful and flavourful and puzzling. I love the idea of a sunken castle... Unfortunately, I've been working on this all evening and I still cant make any sense of the summoning chamber/say the right phrase puzzle. It asks for the ally phrase, which I cant work out, as it's not the ally of that doorway given as the answer. I'm wondering if there's something that I'm missing? There's too many god names (at least 8) which for new players will be really confusing so I'd have to changing them to "air god", "fire god", which I don't like. The phrases are too long too, so I either need to wait for my players to write them down or make something for them to read them off, which slows everything down. A single word, hand symbol or representative item would be better I think. I also think my players are going to learn after the first room not to take anything valuable (if they even try in the first place), so the interesting traps...See more

The end of this module says that players may investigate the tower further. Does anyone know if there is an actual module that follows this, or is this just a "make it up if you want"?

The issue I have with this mod is that it writes itself into…several corners. The entirety of the chapel level and everything about it can be avoided by a super unlikely BUT POSSIBLE roll of 30 perception. A level 1 human rogue with expertise in perception and proficiency in masons tools, a 16 wisdom, and a helpful guidance from a level 1 cleric = a possible 31 to perception. An adventure shouldn't ever include a potential to avoid a massive chunk of it.
Everyone else has beaten the riddles into submission for being poorly written but I have to express my groups frustration with this.
Fire Wall - Sing OUR praise - Fire Phrase = Checks out and sets the trick for the puzzle
Air Wall - Sing ALLY praise - Air Phrase = What? No. Fire are the allies of air this goes against the first wall
Earth Wall - Sing OUR praise - Water Phrase = This matches the opposite world of the Air Wall but still goes against the Fire Wall.
Water Wall - Sing ALLY praise - Water Phrase = This matches the opposite...See more

This is by far the worst written module I've run. The overall story is fine, but the module is clearly in desperate need of editing. It refers to mechanics that don't exist in 5e such as resistance 3 and 5 . The puzzles aren't well written, and the box texts describing the Fire, Air and Earth summoning chambers are identical, which makes the rooms annoyingly repetitive, as well as impeding the player's ability to complete the puzzle.

I really wanted to enjoy running this module. Unfortunately, this module does not really present a challenge and the puzzles and traps present throughout are either trivialized by other parts of the module, or they provide players little incentive to participate.

While I encourage the creators to continue drafting multi-part modules, I would hope that they steer clear of puzzles and traps similar to the ones present in this adventure, few of which I found to be engaging, threatening or fun.

This module would require significant work to be made fun and engaging.

That having been said, the module that precedes this one is fun and I encourage prospective DMs to run that one regardless of the lackluster nature of the followup adventure.

5/5, got a copy from my FLGS to run for AL, so I didn't buy it. My biggest comment is that you should be open to a non-combat solution to it. If someone speaks Primordial, the gargoyles are perfectly willing to help them. And as for the wight at the end, as far as I can tell, he seems far more interested in maintaining the library than anything else. Given that the hobgoblins sent by Bad Fruul are dead, they don't need to actually steal all the books, or fight the librarian. If they have a clever solution, like trading knowledge (suggested by Oghma's shrine upstairs), leaving a party member as collateral, copying the information there, or working to establish a policy for borrowing books from the library, I say let them. It's a far more interesting endgame than just "hack and slash".

A mini dungeon that I've enjoyed only because it was the second half of an adventure. My personal vote is a 3 on 5 because puzzles and foes wasn't really challenging.

Disclaimer: I do not typically enjoy puzzle modules. I realize some players think they are what makes DnD, that they have an important part in the history of the game, etc. but I have a hard time finding those players when I'm playing the actual module. Most of the people I run for or get to play with tend to find puzzle modules infuriating and this one has lived up to that expectation. Here's my review:

This module continues on the DDAL 5-6 module which does little for the season 5 story-line and provides the players with a goal that doesn't seem all that necessary. I often have had to remind players why they are out in the swamp and what they are looking for because it just doesn't seem all that important in the scheme of things. There are non-5e elements in this module such as 3 and 5 Resistance to elements, there is a lot of page flipping as the DM will have to refer to sections on previous pages for partial room descriptions, some of the puzzles are almost unsolvable or rely more on player...See more

Rating 2/5

A rather interesting adventure. There is a lot of lore that can play out here and most of the adventure is puzzles. That said it is a very short adventure with no real satisfaction.

1/5 I am so glad I didn't have to pay for this. I ran it at a Con, so I hope people weren't turned off DND AL after this mess. In the 70+ Expeditions I've DMed this is the worst by far. Confusing map, railroaded traps, secret doors which must be found to advance the plot, an entire floor which can be bypassed (not that there's anything of value there anyways).

I started DMing with the season 4 AL adventures. I found little inconsistencies and typos here & there, but had very little difficulty running the entire campaign. I expected the adventures for season 5 to have been better edited for consistency and spelling/grammar. Things weren't going as smoothly as I had hoped, but until I ran this one I was still able to cobble together descent games.

I have to say that after reading all of the errata I have seen published here on DMs Guild and elsewhere, I still found myself adrift as the DM of this adventure. It isn't even entirely the mistakes that disappoint as the entire story line is weak and the encounters underwhelming. I hope that corrections for the other adventures keep up with feedback from those of us who have paid good money for these official AL adventures. Really - In other adventures when I had questions, the authors mostly responded personally with explanations and guidance. I don't understand why the authors of this one remain silent....See more

I get the impression this author either wasn't familiar with D&D 5e rules, or still had their prior edition head on.

Case in point, during the adventure you get elemental resistance 3 or 5 (for the appropriate Element). What does this mean? Resistance is just 1/2 damage, adding a number is meaningless. What is the appropriate element, "Water Resistance" doesn't achieve much as a game term. Using prior edition knowledge you could rule it as cold resistance, but I see no reference in 5e to those being related, and the water effects in the adventure that deal damage do Bludgeoning?

In addition whenever you ask for a 'information' check, it would be nice to give a box to let us know what we're telling players, instead of us having to quickly skim through and look for references.

Since a quick check against the author shows most of the adventures to be 4-5 star, I can only their head wasn't in the game for this one.

It seems to me that the DDAL05 modules are all tier 1, except for DDAL05-05. Can someone explain why?

They aren't all tier 1....they just released several tier 3 and another tier 2 and they have two tier 4 coming out. We are still mid season. They roll out between 2-4 new modules each month.

Tier 2: 5-4, 5-5, 5-11 (not released yet 5-13, 5-17)
Tier 3: 5-8, 5-9 (not released yet 5-14, 5-15)
Tier 4: (not released yet 5-18, 5-19)

A wizard in my group asked if the Downtime Activity (Faction Copyist) was a repeatable activity or a one-off. I have no idea, based on the text. How are other people ruling or interpreting this?

For future reference—the AL FAQ has been updated to clarify that downtime activities such as these are not repeatable unless they specify otherwise.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
