Dungeons and Dragons 5e Spell Tokens

Dungeons and Dragons 5e Spell Tokens

This is a pack of spell effects for VTT 5e dungeons and dragons. (thats virtual tabletop folks :D )

there are 72 spell effect tokens saved as .PNG files in two sizes, at 140 pixels per five feet, and at 70 pixels per five feet (for those huge AoE spells)

The tokens are persistent spell effects, so... anything with a CHARACTER DISCERNABLE effect, and a non instant duration should be covered here, although anything larger than 120' has been omitted as too large to be practical in VTT.

Walls with casting options have been provided as a 60' straight token, and also a circular or spherical token where appropriate.

They have been designed with transparency in mind, to allow the player and dm to select characters and monsters under the tokens easily, without resorting to layering plugins on the maps.

Additionally .MOD files for fantasygrounds have been included in the download package, to make use faster and easier :D

the spell list is as follows:

Can you print these to use with minis and maps?

I still love these but can you please add Watery Sphere (using Ice wall as a sub) - but still love these tokens

Will these work on roll20 as well as Fantasy Grounds?

I also would love to see a mod that allows the whole token to be selected - weirdly enough on FG running in Wine you can do that that - its only on windows you have to get the exact image

Any chance of getting transparent backings on these? Without that it's a huge pain trying to resize these on the fly since you have to find the few pixels in the ring, increase the size by one, zoom into the map, zoom back out, find the next pixels and repeat. :) Being able to resize anywhere from the whole token would be grand.

these were created WITHOUT a transparent backdrop or dropshadow, specifically because not everyone uses the community layer order extensions, and this in turn means that if you drop an effect with even 1% opacity ON TOP of a character, you can no longer select that character. i discovered this the hard way when creating these images and had to change everything accordingly. if and when FG release an update with a layer order mechanism, i will ALMOST CERTAINLY re-work and re-release these tokens. in the meantime this is the best fix for game utility.

Do you know how to go about doing this in gimp? I don't mind doing it myself for all the tokens because I really want to use them but am losing way too much time trying to select empty space
(I use the layers extension so would be able to put them on a separate layer from player tokens so a transparent but selectable backing would be helpful rather than harmful)
EDIT: Figured it out. I'm probably gonna go through and do low-opacity backgrounds for all the tokens to make it easier to select. Gareth J - If you want I can send you them when I am done if would like so you can offer them as an alternative for those who can use them?

i would hmm. clone them into a layer in photoshop lock opacity, floodfill white, dump them onto a black backdrop. merge, use that as an alpha. ive never used gimp, and cannot offer advice in this regard. im still waiting for the next iteration of FG. so i can update and release the much sexier version of all these guys. but theyre not complete, and until this happens, theyre unusable, as they will snarl up combat instantly.

Any chance of something like this made for printing? I'd snatch that up in a heartbeat.

id say thats unlikely right now as i have moved on to more creatively challenging projects. BUT if fantasygrounds adds the support, i WILL animate them as gifs.

I recently purchased your spell token but the modules will not load in Fantasy Grounds. Any suggestions on how to fix it?

Great tokens pack! But I miss Ice Storm:

"Hailstones turn the storm's area of effect into difficult terrain until the end of your next turn."

Customer avatar

the spell itself happens instantly, so after some consideration i decided it didnt make the cut of enduring effect.

Love the tokens. I'm just having 1 problem with them. The cone spells are 90 degree triangles, technically 5e uses closer to a 60 degree cone. The official rule; a cone where the width at any point is equal to the distance away from the player. Would it be possible for you to provide an updated versions with these added? It caused some confusion in my game yesterday when some players were drawing cones in fantasy grounds and they were different dimensions to your tokens.
Customer avatar
Tim H June 22, 2017 10:48 pm UTC
After further research I've found that in 5e the cone's angle is 53 degrees from the caster FYI
Customer avatar
gareth J June 24, 2017 10:01 am UTC
formerly FG used a 90 degree template, which is why i did a 90 degree cone. i will update this to sixty degrees. gimmie a couple of days.

Does the token pack have cones in it? I bought it because this exchange led me to believe it did...
Customer avatar
gareth J November 15, 2017 9:33 pm UTC
this tokenpack covers spell effects which are persistent. ie they last longer than 1 combat round... so fireball is out. but delayed fireball is in. the only persistant cone shaped effect i was able to find in the PHB was the FEAR spell. (and youll see that its in there). things like cone of cold, are instant effects and are neither listed, nor part of this token set.

I am having an issue. The tokens are all one square (five foot in size). I thought they would be appropriate size inside of fantasy grounds? Am I doing something wrong? I have used the control key and mouse to resize them but that seems to lessen the usefulness and value? Should they automatically size to the map? I thought the tokens would be sized for # of squares? I loaded the large and small mod file trying both of them. I did that through the Token Mod load option. Any advice you have would be great.

I am a player on FG and not a DM, therefore i have very little experience with the DM side or back end of the software. having said that, i would qualify that all the tokens were created at the same RESOLUTION, so a fireball for example will be sixteen times the scale and detail of spiritual weapon (4*4=16), so if theyre all loaded at the same resolution everything WILL scale perfectly.

im offering you here the link to the forums where i discussed the creation of these images with some of the DMs who use them. they have been hugely positive and helpful, and i imagine youll get excellent advice from them in this regard. i will also repost your query there to save you a little time :D i hope this suffices for you with very little effort.

the forum link is:

id like to have better answer for you sir (maam?) so i will pay close attention to whether one of the guys can...See more

further: one of the guys there has created a layering mod for FG to keep the spell tokens UNDER the character tokens, in the map. and that may have load/size options of which im unaware. im eager to see what he comes up with next in this regard. there is a link to it, inside the conversation thread, and it is named : "enhanced images extention"
Customer avatar
gareth J January 07, 2017 4:15 pm UTC
current solution is: If you have a grid on your map, and you have auto-size turned on, then tokens will auto-size for PCs / NPCs. (not for token resolution)
Customer avatar
gareth J January 07, 2017 4:31 pm UTC
OR: right click on the token and click on the little circle at the top right of the radial menu that pops up (which is "reset individual token scale"). This resets the individual token to the size it should be without having to manually do the ctrl click thing. It also doesn't change the auto-scaling for the pc and npc tokens.

Awesome. I spent some time looking at it after I purchased it. I just couldn't find any settings. I searched forums but didn't find that message. If I turn off auto size that seems like the best solution now. Thanks for the assistance. I appreciate the timely responses. My players will be excited to have the tokens now :)
Customer avatar
gareth J January 07, 2017 11:44 pm UTC
if your gridsize is set to 70 pixels per square then they will fit perfectly, unless of course youre using the images from the 140 pixel set. odd that you couldnt find the message thread, if you scroll down the forums to the 5e catagory and then search for "5e tokens done" inside that subcatagory the thread should be easy to locate and contains more information, as people respond to my query.
best of luck sir.

actually after further experience. the "reset individual Token scale" works better.

Editorial rant (sorry): You use "VTT" without ever defining what it means. This could result in some folks not bothering to find out more about your product.

I have placed the mod files in my modules folder for Fantasy Grounds but it doesn't show up in the library? How do you use this mod file?

im not a DM and will have to get back to you on this one. but i WILL get back to you. gimmie 24.

Got it, probably obvious to some but here it is. Once copied into your modules folder in Fantasy Grounds go to your Token section and there is a modules sub section to open. You activate the token set there.

Thanks for the work! They look fantastic!

Are these to be used for an online game, or can they be used for physical game too?
Customer avatar
gareth J October 26, 2016 11:49 pm UTC
they have been designed for VTT, which means variable transparency and a map plate underneath, to display correctly. i would expect these to look aweful printed onto card for an ACTUAL tabletop, and i would have created the art in an entirely different style if that was my intention. you can use them however you wish of course, but i wouldnt recomend printing them.

I've already used these in 2 campaigns.
Amazing work.

I do wish, however, that other spells such as a thunderwave and sleep were included as well.

matey, in the campaigns i play, combat has some urgency, and therefore having to place tokens for temporary effects would slow down play massively, and only enhance gameplay for a few seconds at most. i have therefore focussed on longer lasting effects only, even so it was a colossal bunch of work to lay these out and draw them up :D furthermore many effects either have NO discernable visible effect, (like bannishment), or to many potential appearances...(like most illusions). theres a few in there which have no visible effect BUT ive done them anyways, because the players will need to be aware of them on the map. like mordenkainens hound, or silence.

I feel your choices here were spot on and made from an experienced GM perspective. Instantaneous effects are just not necessary and bog things down.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
