An Introduction to D&D - The Wealthy Merchant

ADD TO WISHLIST >

This campaign was created as a response to comments from some friends of mine. Though they were avid board game players, they didn’t want to try D&D because it seemed like too much of a time commitment with too many rules to learn before getting started.

This campaign uses stripped down characters and a simple campaign, and was made to give them a chance to try it for half an hour on a regular board games night. I’m putting it online in the hopes that other people can do the same with it and expand the community.

I'm completely new to all this, I understood the normal character sheet but why are there X's through parts of this one? Id assume they aren't needed but it even has Initiative crossed out.

Could anyone please help a new and eager DM?

Great mini-adventure and the Level 0 pre-gen character sheets are fantastic. Just wondering if you were thinking of including Barbarian and Bard class character sheets as well?

This is an AMAZING resource for a group of new players and/or a new DM. I'm a teacher who has never DMed about to introduce a DnD club on my middle school campus. I've been wracking my brain on whether to use pregens (and then having to explain what the entire character sheet means while also teaching rules, which dice to roll, etc) or to slog through character creation before they get to play. Now I can have the best of both worlds! Having level zero sheets included is a fantastic idea, and the encounters really do touch on the multiple types of scenarios. Thank you for this!

Could we possibly get a more printer-friendly version of the actual adventure PDF? The background colors chew through printer ink like nobody's business.
Thanks for the great adventure!

Honestly, this has been my favourite Introduction-to-D&D adventure ever. Super simple premise, just enough choice and freedom to give the new players the change to digest what a role-playing game actually is.

Personally I turned both the High Road and Low Road into full-fledged encounters and used complete level 1 PCs, skipping the level 0 included here.

I also added goblin bandits on the high road, whose hobgoblin leader gives the party a chance to negotiate, and a group stirges enjoying the flooding of the low roads. That plus the negotiation at the end makes for a good hour or two for me, perfect length for an introduction.

I've run this twice now with different groups and will continue to do so in the future. Well done!

This one worked really well for my campaign and I was able to create more missions from this one! I just took the mission and let my players use their own characters.

I could be wrong but looks like you forgot to add Ranger Dex and proficiency bonus to the skills? (otherwise this is a cool idea!)

Mistakes on the mages sheet ... it's Fire Bolt, not Fireball in the spell description. It's Purple Cloak, not Purple Cload in the item description.

Aside from that, well done.

Thanks Ken. I've gone ahead and corrected them (though it may take awhile for DMsGuild to show the updates).

Hi Joel,

Just picked up your adventure and saw 1 mistake that was confusing to me:

In the adventure text, it says "Wayward fireballs will cause minor fires in the bar". I assume this must be Fire Bolts :)

Moreover, in the Wizard sheet, it says (at the Fire Bolt spell):"Roll a 1 sided die". Must obviously be a 10 sided die!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
