The Alchemist (5e Class w/ 4 Archetypes)- pdf and Fantasy Grounds

The Alchemist is an INT based caster who uses formulae instead of conventional spells.  They require preparation, but cast quickly when needed (usually by drinking a mixture).  He learns these formulae similar to the way a wizard learns spells, but he has spell slots like a warlock.  He supplements these abilities with Alchemical Esoteries (special abilities and tricks he discovers as he advances in levels), Alchemical Bombs (a new cantrip formula unique to the Alchemist), and a variety of class customization options as part of the base class, as well as the archetypes, each with their own unique flavor to allow you to play the kind of Alchemist you want to play.

A fully developed class with unique mechanics, four complete archetypes, and dozens of customization options.  Made from the ground up specifically for D&D 5th edition.  Please see the full preview under the cover art for several pages straight from the write up and a full description of how the class works.

Updates:
01/19/17 - Now a DMs Guild Gold Best Seller!
12/25/16 - Now including a Printer Friendly version.
11/24/16 - Now including a Fantasy Grounds module in addition to the regular PDF so you can have all of the Alchemist class info at your fingertips in Fantasy Grounds.

Alchemist Changelog:
1.8 - 2017-02-20: minor wording chage in class table for clarity.
1.7 - 2017-01-19: minor formatting and diction corrections for clarity.
1.6 - 2016-12-25: simple typo correction.
1.5 - 2016-10-23: Removed an old placeholder in the spell list that should have been deleted previously.
1.4 - 2016-10-14: Corrected minor typographical inconsistencies.
1.3 - 2016-10-12: 2 minor typographical corrections.
1.2 - 2016-10-09: Fixed a minor typo and clarified that formulae can only affect the imbiber. You cannot give a formula's effects to someone else by touch or range, even if the corresponding spell normally allows for it. This is hopefully clearer now.
1.1 - 2016-09-26: minor formatting updates (spells in text italicized, etc.)

I'm sorry you're having issues. I just downloaded them from scratch 30 seconds ago upon seeing your message, and everything opens ok without issue on my end. Please try to redownload them (latest version is 1.7), as the files do not appear to have anything wrong with them - they worked fine for me. The pdf should open without issue in acrobat reader or any equivalent. Please try again and let me know if you're still having issues. Perhaps send a screenshot of the error you're receiving if it persists.

I really love this class I'm DMing a campaign with someone playing as a Mutant discipline, i was just wondering if there was a way you would make the PDF searchable and able to be copied from. I'm printing out spell cards for my players, and as lazy as It sounds I really don't wanna type out the entire Alchemical bomb cantrip.

Great to hear! Please leave me a review and a rating to let me know how it goes in your game. I'd really like to hear how it plays in your game!

Contact me on facebook and I'll happily send you the text of the spell (I'm sure you don't want to publish your email on here)

Unfortunately, the way I make these doesn't allow for a searchable pdf very well.

It looks like a really well put together class. Any chance of a printer friendly version of the PDF? at 19 pages that's a lot of ink that could be saved with a version lacking the images and background.

I've been collecting different 5e Alchemists and trying to find the "perfect Alchemist", and they all have their strengths. This one is in the running for one of my favorites. I have some immediate questions about it through.

One thing I am very concerned about is the Mutant. Right from the start you can get a +4 to an ability score and the maximum bonus is a +8, potentially reaching a temporary 28(!) Ability Score. You basically get the Barbarian capstone at 2nd level, only you choose which ability score you want to increase, the increase in temporary until level 10, and it just keeps growing over time. Even the original Pathfinder Alchemist has a flat +4 increase and that never changes over level progression. With the growing list of extra mutagen effects, I think the class would be fine with a flat +2~4. Could you please share your thought process for this?

In a more nitpicking, formatting sense, you explain the Mutant's level progression in twice in two separate paragraphs....See more

Hello, thanks for commenting and asking! I'd be delighted to explain. This class was made over the course of months, so please know that a painstaking amount of effort was put into balancing it.

For starters, the alchemist is not an overtly powerful offensive force, given the "spells" and abilities it gets - they are all basically self buffs, and concentration is still a factor. You can certainly build an offensive alchemist, but you will sacrifice a lot of utility to do it, or you'll have to multiclass. So giving them force damage with a limited area of effect and a limited range was one small way to help mitigate that lack of direct offensive power. They had to have SOMETHING directly offensive that wasn't easily resisted.

Yes, you get a +4 right from the start wherever you want it (to a point) with the Mutant. That's just a +2 modifier. You can put it on strength or dex and swing a sword better, get an AC boost, etc, but you're still a relatively low HP, light...See more

Thank you very much for the quick response!

Honestly, the rest of the class seems very well balanced. That's why I had a triple-take when I first read the Mutant because the value seemed so high for 5e (I actually forgot about expertise-type features). The fact that it does not directly affect damage output and that it requires an entire action are fair limiters. I also did not know all of PF's discoveries, so that was an unfair conparison as well. Thank you for clearing that up!

As for the level progression thing, when reading through it, it almost uses the same wording, which got me confused. Once you responded I was able to reread it and notice the difference.

I'm going to keep rereading this so I'll return if I have any more concerns. Thank you again!

Totally fair comments, to be sure. The similar wording was intentional, as I try to use exactly the same notation that the rule books use. It's definitely a class with a lot going on, and the Mutant doubly so, so I appreciate the honest questions rather than just assuming it's messed up. If I can be of any further assistance, don't hesitate to let me know.

Thanks again! Please consider leaving a rating/review if it really does make it to the top of your favorite list! And tell your friends! Also strangers.

I'm confused on how spells and spell slots work- I'm under the assumption all spells are automatically their max level- Then how does sacrificing a level 2 or 3 slot work then?

If I'm level 5 do I have two level one spells to cast, two level two spells, and two level threes?

Or do I only have two spells per day period- and treat them all as level three spells?
Customer avatar
October 24, 2016 7:31 am UTC
CREATOR
The spell slots work just like a warlock's. You have X number of spell slots (see the table), at that "max level" (again, see the table) per SHORT (or long) rest.

So at level 5, you have 2 spell slots. Each spell slot is a 3rd level spell slot. It's important to remember that you can use a 3rd level spell slot to cast a level 1, 2, or 3 spell, and the same applies to alchemists and their formulae.

So let's say you're level 5 and you use a formula of Aid (level 2) and a formula of Fly (level 3). You would have used both of your 3rd level spell slots to use those. Unless you multiclassed, that's all you have. Then, when you take a short or long rest, you recover those spell slots.

Can you explain how you intended the spells to work? Example: Heroism. The alchemist drinks the potion. Can he then touch a creature to give them heroism? Or was it meant to only be a self buffing class?
Customer avatar
October 09, 2016 5:09 am UTC
CREATOR
Self only. Only the imbiber of the formula may benefit from the effects of the formula, and they may not be conveyed to others. If he drinks a Fly formula, he can fly, but he can't make anyone else fly. the same is true of Bless, Heroism, etc.

Except in the case of the Apothecary. If the Apothecary makes a remedy formula, then he can hand it to someone and they can drink it, gaining the benefit of it. But only certain formulae can be remedies, as laid out in the subclass description.

Does that help clarify?

CREATOR
I've uploaded version 1.2 which makes this a little clearer. While it did address spells with multiple targets like Fly, it didn't address spells like Darkvision or Heroism specifically which are single target spells by touch. I've added a line (and fixed a minor typo) to make this as clear as possible that the Alchemist's formulae affect the imbiber only, and do not confer benefits to anyone else by touch/range, etc.

Thanks for the question and the opportunity to clarify!

Perfect! I was a little confused by something like heroism when giving it to an ally as an apothecary. I guess that makes sense as to why you took out concentration for remedies. Seems well balanced, now time to play and see for myself! I also came back and donated since I didn't the first time. Thanks! :)

Sorry, the only text copy of the final product is written with design notations all throughout, which ultimately enables the formatting you see here. Perhaps there is some alternative I can offer you.

Mostly I wanted to be able to copy and paste the descriptions of class abilities into a digital character sheet, so that I don't have to manually retype all the information. It's just a convenience thing and not a big deal if you can't do it for whatever reason, I was just wondering why the pdf was not OCR

Understood completely. If it were as simple as converting it to OCR (I've tried, trust me), I'd be happy to. The initial process doesn't allow for that once it's created, apparently, as I've come to discover. If you have an email address you wouldn't mind sharing, I can get you the next best thing, though, since you asked so politely.

Note from the author: I just uploaded version 1.1. The content in this version is the same, but I made some minor formatting changes with spell names and such and one capitalization correction - just to be more consistent. No need to download the new version unless you're a stickler for that kind of thing like I am.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
