Mac users, please be careful to never open the sheets with Preview. Opening them even once with Preview will cause the sheet's form-fillable fields and automation to be the subject to a disintegration spell.

Thanks Javier Aumente for being the magnificent mind behind the design of these sheets! Please check out his collection of awesomely designed sheets for several different systems, in Spanish (I'm not allowed to link to external sources here, so please Google "Hojas de Personaje - La partida del sábado" to find Javier's work).

These sheets would not have been in the state that they are in now, without to the work of some awesome people:

A big thanks to Gretkatillor over on ENworld.org. The code in this character sheet (since its redesign from v6.0 onwards) has partly been borrowed from and was otherwise inspired by Gretkatillor's work.

Furthermore, some people on ENworld.org deserve my thanks for their help with transcribing stuff: shmooel.yakov, Fitsou, Athinar, and Noah Ivaldi.

Lastly, Noah Ivaldi deserves a special mention for his help in making sure everything is proper English, which as a non-native speaker is very much appreciated!

It's a great sheet; About the only problem we've had with it is that when having a negative integer as your DEX mod (such as -1, from dumping Dex), the AC field for dex returns NaN or Not a Number. This, in turn, has caused the sheet to constantly pop-up "The value entered does not match the format of the field [AC]" whenever it reruns calculations.

Thank you for reporting any issues you find with the sheet!

However, I'm not able to replicate the problem that you are describing. Could you help me to reproduce it? Or might it be that you are not using the latest version (v12.998) with Adobe Acrobat DC (Pro, Standard, or Reader), which you can get for free (https://get.adobe.com/reader/)?

Can you please tell me the steps to take, starting with a freshly downloaded sheet, to make this bug apparent?

Two questions:

1) Is there some way to unlock the DMG firearms in the weapons drop down? I've tried adding them via script but they never show up. I'm not sure what to do at this point.

2) If I wanted to add scripts for variants to races (orcs and half-orcs in this case), will the sheet overwrite while the source is in use and ignore when not? I know that seems like a duh statement but I'm just trying to figure out how to get it to work properly.

Thank you for the review!

1) The DMG firearms are set to be excluded by default, just like the Unearthed Arcana articles. To use them, go to the Source Selection dialogue (the one that pops up when you open the sheet for the first time, or by clicking the "Sources" button in the 'JavaScript Window'-toolbar or by clicking the "Source Materials" bookmark). In that dialogue, go to 'Weapons/Attacks', and move the weapons you want to the Included section.

2) If you add material to the sheet that is already defined (e.g. define the RaceList["Orc"] entry), then you are overwriting that entry, so the sheet only knows the one you entered. If you add new content (e.g. define something like RaceList["Big Orc"]), than that content is subject to the normal rules of sources being included and excluded. The sheet will apply the race/class/background where the regular expression matches (regExpSearch) and it or its source is not excluded. If multiple fit these...See more

Hello I would like to submit a bug report.

It seems that whenever you update your class and select a druid archetype other than the circle of the moon, the sheet will not auto fill in the druids wildshape features.
I have been able to reproduce this every time.

BUG REPORT: This is a new one on me O_O/

From the looks of it, this is a display error and might well be resolved after a reboot. However, someone came to me before with a bug where all the fields of a page somehow got moved to another page. Maybe the same is going on here, but then the fields got duplicated? We were unable to reproduce that bug, as it was probably some kind of weird error that occurred during saving.

If you have a way of reproducing this bug, I certainly would love to know how. If not, then I suggest creating your character again with a fresh sheet and hoping that it doesn't happen again.

I'm happy to take a look at the sheet to see what is going on, but I probably won't be able to fix this kind of once-in-a-million freak behaviour by Adobe Acrobat.

The sheet does include the Theurgy wizard and all other classes/subclasses from the Unearthed Arcana articles. You do need to make sure that you include the relevant source (UA:TF) so that you can use the content of that source. By default, the UA sources are excluded, because they are playtest material.

This is a great sheet and use it for all of my AL characters. I have a wizard who's a little OCD, is there a way to add spells to the spellbook past the first Add Spells to Spellbook dialog box. It looks like the Wizard Spells dialog shows 20 of the lowest level spells, and then a second dialog comes up with an additional 80 slots. Any way to add spells beyond that?

You can always just give him a sheet with ALL of the Wizard spells available in your campaign and have him check/circle (etc) the ones he has learned. Either:

Click Spells --> Replace spell sheet with a "complete" spell sheet and select Wizard

or

Click Spells --> (Re)Generate a spell sheet and select "Full Class List" on the first screen that appears.

Either way, remember to hit Spells --> "Select sources to use" before doing this if you're not using specific books or UA's (e.g. most campaigns would leave out the Modern Magic UA list). For AL campaigns, it also allows you to restrict the list to only use AL spell sources, or a subset of those.

Multiple people have been running into this issue, but funnily enough only recently, while the limit for 123 spells in the Wizard's spellbook has been there since the spell sheets were added to the Character Record Sheet. I guess D&D 5e is now so old that the Wizards people are playing have accumulated too many spells for this limit.

You can rest easy in the knowledge that the next version of the sheet will allow you to add an unlimited number of spells to your wizard's spellbook!

Thank you for the review!

I have no plans of adding any type of pre-generated character to the sheet's options, as that defeats the purpose of the automated sheets. As far as I can tell, the only difference between a surrogate's Adventure logsheet and the default AL logsheet is that you have to keep track of a soul being devoured and that the name of character field is for the character for which the surrogate is stepping in. I think you can get both easily by using the AL logsheet as this character sheet offers. You will simply have to use another PDF file for the surrogate's character sheet (or take the stand-alone MPMB's AL logsheet). I don't think it makes sense to create another logsheet, increasing the file size by another 3 MB, just for this season of AL.

Any reason you do not have the player reference sheet for the colorful version of your sheet?

Yes, of course! The colourful sheet came first and already has the important combat rules included on the third page. It was only later that I made the Printer Friendly player reference sheet and I have never gone back to make one for the colourful sheet. I also hate recursions, so if I every make one for the colourful sheet I will also have to remove those rules from the third page and think of something else to put there.

My spell pages disappear when I go to print preview and then don't print even though my saved version of the file has them on there. I got the top of the first page, the line with spellcasting ability, etc., and then it prints out two blank pages before printing out the player reference page. All of the other pages are fine; the spell pages appear fine in the saved file. Trying to print those two pages out doesn't work. I have tried to print out just those two. Nothing works

Good to see you figured it out!

But to reply on part of what you were saying, the Artificer is indeed treated as a completely separate class, because it is just that. Also, the sheet has no way of mix-matching classes, something needs to be defined as its own, separate thing for it to work with the JavaScript.

I put this out there on another thread but not sure where at this point but I am getting an error on importing a pdf that it is not recognizing it as a MPMB sheet pdf. I use the print function on the JavaScript popup control to print it as a pdf then use the import direct from pdf but it doesn't like it. Other than this and it seems anytime I load up my character I lose the custom languages and it defaults back to +1 for Scholar or whatnot, the sheet is really nice and thorough.

The first one may be an Acrobat issue -- Doesn't printing strip out all form-fillable fields? If you start from the MPMB PDF and print it to *a different* PDF file (I do this, "printing" as PDF to make much, much smaller files for emailing to my players), the original MPMB file with your character data should still work, but the new file you created will just be a plain document, as if you had scanned it in from a piece of paper.

I just replied to your comment at the Spell Sheets, but after reading your explanation here I understand where you are coming from.

You don't need to export anything to import into a new sheet. You can just go to "Import Directly from PDF" in the new sheet and select the old PDF. Don't first print to pdf, just select the original PDF.

What do you mean exactly with "anytime I load up my character I lose the custom languages and it defaults back to +1 for Scholar"? Do you mean any time you open the sheet? If that is the case, would you mind please sharing the PDF that exhibits this behaviour with me so that I can investigate this bug?

Kirk L July 26, 2017 3:08 am UTC

I just tried to recreate the language issue and it seems to work fine but I will look at my other instances and check them as well. It is possible that was fixed somehow in the passed.

As for the main issue, what I am reading is that there is no longer a way to export the sheets to a smaller format and "importing from PDF" is not reading from a 2MB output but from the 27+MB instance of another full sheet? The way I read the FAQ was that instead of exporting/importing it would read a base PDF with string manipulation and read it into the main sheet engine. Having these massive sheets seems bulky and sometimes locks up on some of my player's computers, and in my case I can't have more than one instance open at a time. Exporting to smaller files and the ability to read those back in for edit was really, really nice.
Customer avatar
morepurplemorebetter J July 27, 2017 5:29 pm UTC
CREATOR
I'm sorry to hear that the FAQ didn't do a good job of explaining this, but indeed, you can't import a PDF that is not the fully-automated PDF.

The function to export and import small text-files that contain all the content of the fields is not gone, it is right there in the Import menu, listed as Import/Export .xfdf file (depreciated).
Do note that this function is depreciated for a reason and that when you export-import with this method, data will be lost in the transfer. This is because that method can't (and thus never did) support any of the pages for which you can have multiple copies, such as the companion, wild shape, adventurers league, and spell sheets.

Alternatively, might I suggest you keep the 'bulky' 27 MB file somewhere and use the print-to-pdf file for your daily needs. Then, when you want to upgrade your character to a new version, you can use the original. 27 MB is big for a pdf, but surely it isn't big enough to store somewhere on your hard drive.

Just to add on to this, Kirk -- If you want a small PDF file you can more easily email, send via FB or whatever (to put onto a small flash drive, or to send to a player in a way that prevents him from changing anything so he can print it at home), *Print* the file and choose a virtual PDF printer as the printer type. While the resulting "printed" file cannot be modified (because the form fill fields are stripped out/flattened), it's usually 3MB or smaller. Printing to an XPS file (Windows' answer to PDF) or an OXPS file (Open Office XPS) works, too, but they're a little bigger.

e.g.: I printed a lv5, 4-page character sheet in all 3 ways. 26 MB for the base file. Results (all were "printed" as b/w):
PDF: about 2MB
XPS: about 2.5MB
OXPS: about 3.5MB

Side note -- "Printing" them all in color (starting from a full-color file) made little difference in file size (e.g, 2.2MB or so for a PDF)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
