The House of Poe

ADD TO WISHLIST >

A creepy horror adventure for Characters of Level 5-6.

Deep in the swamp, villagers claim something unnatural is happening at a large manor on the edge of town. A suspicious owner whose wife died years ago is attempting something dark and terrible, and it's up to the party to stop him. The true fun of this adventure lies in the house itself, which is filled with hidden references and homages to the works of Edgar Allan Poe, with the author himself filling the role as the suspicious home owner.

This sounds interesting, but... $5 for 11 pages.. is that right?? ..or did some DMsGuild page counter thing fail miserably? The description of the adventure sounds like it would take a fair bit more than 11 pages to cover it, so I'm not sure what to think.

I am planning on running this tonight with three of my players as two couldn't make it. I love the concept but saw how some had wished Edgar's journal was included. I took it upon myself to write up some short entries for my players to find. Here is the link if anyone wants to use what I made.

I ran this module last night with three level 4 - eladrin fighter, dragonborn fighter and human druid - modified their arrival to Illgard as The Raven Queen transporting their consciousness to this realm as a test as we are currently running the Rime of the Frostmaiden and two players cancelled last night. I loaded up some of Midnight Syndicate's eerie music, found some female screams and girl laughing clips on YouTube, dimmed the lights, lit some candles and we dove in. My players completed the module in four hours, were grinning ear to ear throughout the entire session. I went brutal mode during the fight with Edgar having him cast circle of death at the get go and then double blight. It was rough but my players survived. They raved about this module, it was probably their favorite thus far.

I recommend that DMs take a moment to develop the tavern at the beginning and then really plan out the entrance into the manor. My players decided to tear off the boards and chains and I wasn't prepared for...See more

I'm so excited to run this for some friends on halloween! I see it's recommended for lvl 5-6, if I have a larger party of 6 players would lvl 4 be better? Or will it be too difficult?

I start running this tomorrow with my party (they're so excited!), but I can't find dimensions for the maps anywhere? Can anyone help out?

About how long does this take? I figured a hook to set this up as a pop out during my on going campaign; I want to make sure we can clear the house in a 2 hour game.

I didn't run it with the fastest of groups but as a one shot it took at least four hours and my players skipped stuff. You'd need to pare down the house significantly or have speedrunner players to get it done in 2 hours or less.

Just ran this last night as my first time as a DM! My husband is generally the DM for our group but i wanted to try my hand. I'm a huge Poe fan, but my group isn't as familiar. They loved this one shot! I paired it with this playlist (https://open.spotify.com/playlist/73R66lsZ3bTU26idjjrBGQ) for some great atmosphere. I also made props for the spell scroll, the journal, the old love letters and the safe combo. I LOVED running this campaign and hope i get the chance to do so again. Excellent work, thank you for this one shot!

Ran as a very fun Halloween one shot (it’s great with the Syrinscape Deserted Desert House and Witchwood soundsets). Excellent self-contained adventure, but could easily fit into an ongoing campaign, too. Very well done!

Used this for last year's Halloween, my group LOVED it, utterly LOVED IT. It is one of the best modules I have played. Now off to find a Lovecraft one.

I like the look of this! I plan on running it for Halloween.

Question on the maps: what's the tiny little room/rug thing in the bottom right hand corner of the top and bottom floors? It looks like it might be a trap door or window or something, but it isn't something that's described in the PDF.

Those are stairs leading from where the servants live to get quick access to the kitchen area. Sorry if that wasn't clear!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
