Physician Class (5e)

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Suggested Price $1.00

Not all magic is made to cause harm, and not all healing stems from the mercy of the divines. Life begets life, after all, and thus a Physician takes upon themselves the task of curing ills wherever they may find them. Whereas others might take to adventuring by the sword or the bow, you take to it with a caring hand and beneficial magic.

Not all adventures end in death. Some end in life. The Healer's Arts provide a Physician with unique frameworks with which to practice their craft. There are the Menders, those who bolster their healing with the energy of the Positive plane. The creation of medical familiars falls under the domain of the Channelers, who use their summoned companions to facilitate their daily tasks. Finally, there are the Cleansers, Physicians who delve deep into the effluvial to research diseases and thus learn to spread healing among many.

The second version introduces the Art of Enhancement for Physicians who treat their enemies like diseases to be cured, and the Art of Reinforcement, whose Physicians take a more direct approach to preventing harm.

Current Version: 2.1

Changelog: Adrenal Infusion rebalance. Slight rebalance for Bloodbath. Tweaking of spell list.

Hey, question about Succor, is it meant to allow for upcasting of spells beyond 9th level?

Hey Mr. Tejada, just wanted to give my thoughts after purchasing and reviewing with friends:
-The true gem of the class is the "Art of Creation" subclass. This is everything the myriad forms of ritualist/shaman/spirit guide classes should aspire to, with a delightful application towards healing in general. Truly solid, A+ work. "Art of Purification" and "Art of Enhancement" are fun and different, both also worthwhile additions. "Art of Restoration" is bland, but can go toe-to-toe with Life Clerics, in terms of raw healing power, which is what some people will want.
-The flaw of the class lies with the "Art of Reinforcement" subclass, which seems very unbalanced. Take a standard level 3 character, with a +3 CON mod (this is the choice stat here, even over CHA). Averaged health is 23. This character easily starts out with an AC of 19, can negate 10d10 of any damage type with spell slots and succor, and doesn't even require reactions to do so. I like the look of this class, but am confused why it uses the Charisma stat, instead of intelligence. It seems like a cross between a wizard and a cleric, and there are so few uses for intelligence in the game compared to all the others, would be nice to see an intelligence based healer :)

Physicians' use of magic is more like an art form than the educated sciences. As an expression of one's will through performance, it is Charisma based. This allows physicians to forgo traditional spellbooks for any sort of mnemonic devices that evoke a familiar feeling in them, like prayer beads or a collection of photographs in a more modern setting.

I love this class and will be using it when I start my own campaign. I do have a request if it's not to forward: My wife as expressed an interest in trying the game out but hasn't liked any of the classes that I can find nor the ones in the PHB. She likes to play as an undead or a necromancer. Could you create a necromancer based on the Physician but in the opposite direction. It's difficult to explain what I'm looking for in a comment. lol

I have a lot of concerns for Adrenal Infusion it seems a bit to strong right now. I've toned it down a bit in my campaign by putting a limit on the amount of players it can effect. I wanted to ask what your thoughts on this was.

It's already just one person per turn, per use of succor, and it doesn't affect constructs or undead. How much more so did you want it limited?

So far I've play tested most of the archetypes in my groups they're well made. However i still feel strongly about the overall strength of Adrenal infusion is still way to strong regardless of whether or not you have to use some of your resources for it. For one the way it's worded would indicate that you can adrenal infuse an entire party if you wanted to, making some encounters that should be deadly completely trivial. It needs a limitation on how many people it can effect or have some of its boons taken out.

My group play tested it last night. I feel like the spell list is lacking at higher levels, and Adrenal Infusion is way too powerful, especially for only a single use of Succor. I'd suggest maybe giving the extra action the same limitations as Haste, as the fighter in the group managed to get 9 attacks in one round (Extra Attack (2), Action Surge, Adrenal Infusion)

While writing "Adrenal Infusion", I thought of the possibility of giving it the drawback of adding a level of exhaustion after use, or something like a worsened post-Haste "debuff", or even just increasing the cost. Any thoughts?

Also, which archetype did you play?

I played a School of Enhancement one. Doping was very good, I enjoyed that a lot. At my table, we've given the Adrenal Infusion's extra action the same limitation as the extra action granted by Haste, so limited to only one weapon attack, Dash, Disengage, Hide, or Use an Object actions.

I've been playing this class for a campaign and I am really enjoying it. The only thing is I feel like the path of creation is severely underpowered in comparison to the other paths- your familiar remains very weak throughout all levels of progression and seeing as they are mechanically supposed to be involved in battle, they need more survivability.

There is an extensive rework of the Physician in progress. I'll keep this in mind.

I really like this class but I do worry about it's ability to survive in combat. Honestly, while I'd love one of my players to play one, I know my enemies would target them first. I noticed there are also two good saving throws, I think that might be to up the chance of not dying. I'd suggest dropping the dex save to intelligence and adding in an armor ability. Maybe, rather than adding in armor proficiency, I suggest something like the monk's ability. Otherwise, I think it's way too tempting to multi-class into life domain cleric for one or two levels to get the heavy armor proficiency and some healing boosts.
Also, small mistake I found. Under Nurse Practitioner you mention the Medical Familiar feature, which I think is supposed to be Therapeutic Familiar.
Again, this is a great class, and I would love to play it or have one of my players chose so.

My group has been play testing your class, it's fun but we have all more or less agreed that the soothe can trip is severely underpowered. We found that is you removed the after immediate damage and give it a progression similar to other damage dealing cantrips it progressed reasonably and made up the physicians lack of hp and armor

Version 1.11 features leveling progression, actually! The "only on immediate damage" factor was added in to prevent abuse. Cantrips don't spend spell slots, after all, so you could just use Soothe indefinitely to bring people up to max hit points after a few moments. If it only works on recently lost hit points, then the chance for abuse is gone.

Quick question about Analgesic Veil, does it expend the allies Hit Dice, or just use that as a basis for the spell?

It doesn't spend them. It only uses them for calculations.

In the spell casting save doc and attack modifier you use intelligence instead of wisdom was this intentional

That's unintentional. It should be Wisdom.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
