"...brilliantly designed and everyone had a blast. Highly recommended!"

"...a lot of fun. My group and I really enjoyed it. Five stars!"

Our heroes are approached by Tristan Harpell, an entitled young mage and heir to a suite of rooms in Ivy Mansion, the ancestral home of the Harpell wizard dynasty. His inheritance is “infested” with the wacky experiments of his dead great-uncle, Siegfried Harpell, and Tristan needs the party to clean things up.

The party will have many wild and bizarre encounters while digging through Siegfried Harpell’s derelict magical concoctions - and along the way they might even discover the astonishing truth behind Siegfried's disappearance!

Into Ivy Mansion is a Dungeons and Dragons one-shot adventure for a 3rd-4th level party. It features exploration, role-playing and thrilling combat encounters...

This adventure was co-created with critically acclaimed DMs Guild author, Remley Farr!

Absolutely loved this adventure. I ran it as a fairly new DM for one complete newbie, one fairly experienced player and one very experienced player. They all really enjoyed it - the map especially because it gave the exploration a visual element. I really hope I get to run it again sometime for a different group of players because it was just brilliant.

When they started off, they really took Tristan’s request to heart, they absolutely annihilated the chairs, sofa and plants in the sitting room which was really funny.

In the library one of my players asked if there were any portraits and on a whim I said yes. They then asked if they could see anyone in the portraits wearing Siegfried’s cap that they had found in the sitting room. I improvised and said yes, there was a portrait of a woman wearing the cap, and she was holding a book - I randomly chose the ‘Confessions of an Assassin’ from the sample book titles list. They found this book, and I said that handwritten on the first...See more

Bought this as part of a package. Ran it with a group of mixed experience and it worked really well. I found a detailed map online and it added alot to our game especially since we were playing virtually. They were a party of 4 level 3 characters, the difficulty level was balanced for them, they needed a short rest and those health potions came in handy. One of the new players figured out the keys were swapped and was delighted with herself. They were all very wary of the telescope message so decided to tell Tristan (but not before getting their reward from him). Great one-shot adventure, cant wait to play the rest in the package.

Can't leave a proper review as I bought this as part of the Complete Adventures. Ran "Into Ivy Mansion" last night for a party of 5 level 3 characters (fighter, ranger, druid, warlock, rogue). Another excellent adventure from MT Black; players thoroughly enjoyed the variety of encounters and the atmosphere which was a mixture of amusing and creepy. Most combat encounters were of medium difficulty for a party of this size and level(party took one short rest; only one PC knockout occurred during the adventure) but required varying tactics. The players really enjoyed exploring the setting and figuring out exactly what was going on. Playtime was just shy of 3 hours. Highly recommended.

I bought this as the package deal here on dmsguild but it won't let me rate it since I didn't buy single adventure so I figured I would give my feedback here. My players loved this adventure! They never looked into the telescope and actually killed the Oni (they were 5 level 4s). We ran "Magic Village for Sale" prior to this one and then "Expedition to the Lost Peaks" which my players loved as well! Keep it up Richard Jansen-Parkes and M.T. Black!

We have videos of all three sessions up on our YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrem-4KgTeAUiwsspaqGylg and a 4ish minute highlight video for each as well!

My players did not look through the telescope. They decided to fight the Oni.

During the Oni fight, one of the players abandoned his friends. He went through the vault door, down the stairs, and started exploring (leaving his friends to fight OP monster). I had no idea what to do. I was so stressed out. In a panic, I pulled up the Mines of Madness adventure and inserted that downstairs so I would have something to tell the player. I had only half-read it months ago, but at least it was something. Eventually, the exploring PC returned to his dying party.

I had Oni knock a few PCs unconcious and then attempt to leave. The remaining PCs chased him everywhere he went. Oni was forced to TPK the entire party.

I was nice and didn't have Oni super dead kill them. Instead, I had him leave into the other wings of the mansion, and had the party wake up in the telescope room. I kept hoping they would do the telescope/arcane circle stuff, but they never did. They went down into the...See more

"They all had lots of fun, but I remain convinced I will never know what players will decide to do. " This should be tattooed onto everyone considering running any RPG. You cannot hope to control them. All you can do is adjudicate results of their madness.

I just bought this, it will be the first adventure I ever run - I'm going to use it as practice before trying to run my own story/world with some friends! I'm a little nervous.

Question - how many players is this for? I am thinking of running it for three players - should they start at 4th level since it is a smaller party?

It was designed with 4 characters in mind. Either start your PCs at a higher level, or give them a henchman.

It was based very, very loosely on the second floor of the White House residence.

This was the first adventure I ever ran as a DM. I bought it on impulse when the collection first went on sale, and tucked them all away in case I ever wanted to run a game. I picked up a game when my group's regular DM was going to be out of town, and flipped through some of these in the complete collection, knowing them to be good one-shots, and picked this one because it seemed to have a really great start, and some interesting encounters.

I was not disappointed. The start had my players buying right in immediately, and it was the perfect amount of content for one evening. Sticking a mimic right there in one of the first rooms in the game's primary location was brilliant; the rest of their time there they kept shooting at random bits of furniture 'just in case' and it made things wonderful. The map was also brilliantly done, with the whole bit about it being labeled only about 20% correctly. One player picked up on this quickly; "A library? But it's labeled swimming... Oh I see, he's planning...See more

Thanks Joshua, I'm glad you had fun and welcome to the world of DM'ing! Those are some good suggested alternative endings - I always encourage DMs to adjust things to fit the party they are playing with. I agree that the Oni is a great villain, and well worth bringing into play.

I'm finding two glaring issues with this adventure, both involving places where the players might try to go. One is the 'main doors' that are west of the main hall. Presumably these lead to the rest of the mansion? The DM might have to come up with a lot on the fly if the players decide to wander that way. The other one is the 'lower level' in the vault room. This is where the Oni is originally but what about when he comes back up and is (presumably) defeated in some way? What is down there? I'm almost 100% sure the players will try to go down there since they have been hired to clean the place out after the Oni mucks everything up.

Hi Joshua, thanks for your question.

I've received a lot of play test reports on this adventure now, and this hasn't been a problem in actual play. The mission is fairly clear, and most players stick to that.

If your party walk back out through the main doors, I would probably have Tristan re-appear and demand to know where they are going - they made a deal with him to clear out his rooms, after all. The Harpell's certainly won't let them wander through Ivy Mansion at will - someone will either teleport them out or turn them into rabbits. Your call.

Regarding the lower levels, Tristan's warning that there is "nasty stuff" down there, and his instruction to lock the door, seems sufficient to deter most parties (in fact, I haven't heard of anyone trying to do it). If the PCs went that way, I would most likely throw increasingly difficult monsters at them. Start with CR 5, and increase the CR with each encounter.

Thank you, I had missed the part about him warning them off and to lock the vault door. Still, seems odd as to what the purpose is; why are there so many 'nasty things' down there and no one is concerned about it?

Also, there is a sentence that has me a bit confused. At the end of the section about locking the vault door, it mentions that it will take a player about a round to get back to the pantry; what is that in reference to? The players have both keys right? Why would they need to go back to the pantry just because they realize the keys are mixed up? I like the key swap thing, but it seems a simple and immediate fix to just pull out the other key.

Also, in your experience what is the most usually obtained ending? I feel that it would be the one where the players find Siegfried, in fact that is the one I would hope for, but I'm not positive whether or not that is a likely scenario.

"why are there so many 'nasty things' down there and no one is concerned about it?"

The Harpell's are very powerful, but also super eccentric. In my conception, all sorts of dangerous and weird things are happening in the mansion. "Freddie, remember to banish that chain devil when you are done with it." "Yes, grandma." That sort of thing.

"The players have both keys right?"

Not necessarily. They may have picked up the key in the kitchen, but they may not have. They may not even have visited the kitchen before going to the observatory.

"what is the most usually obtained ending?"

From the playtest reports, this has varied a bit, but most people seem to have figured out how to summon Siegfried. After some stress! But if it ends another way, that's completely ok and good, too.

You know what, I see now. There are three keys total, I thought that the 'pantry' key was the one included to be teleported into a character's pocket, but that's actually a key to the rest of the mansion.

I wanted to rate this adventure "Awesome" but because I bought it in Prelude to Thunder it wouldn't let me. Says I didn't buy it. LOL
I guess if you buy them in a bundle it won't let you rate them individually.
Good job M.T. on this adventure, tons of fun.

Thanks Monster! Yes, if you get the adventure as part of a collection, you can't rate the individual adventure (unfortunately).

If you get a moment, I'd be grateful if you could rate the collection.

"Prelude to Thunder" was removed, so I can't review anything bought in that Pack. I have DM's Guild tech support looking into this. My suggestion is not rearrange the packs, or at least leave up the older ones for a while.

Thankyou for the kind review. Good call about the maps. I am slowly reworking them to a consistent format, as I have time.

Hi Matt, that's quite a big jump. Doubling the number of creatures in each encounter will (very roughly) achieve what you want.

Alternatively, you might want to check out my adventures "Little Shrine of Horrors", "Expedition to the Lost Peaks" or "Magic Village for Sale", which are all aimed at higher levels

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
