DDIA05 Storm King's Thunder: A Great Upheaveal (5e)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

An Introductory Adventure for Storm King's Thunder.

Characters of Level 1-5

As evening approaches, you spot a wooden signpost next to a trail that heads north into the hills. Nailed to the post are three arrow-shaped signs. The two marked “Waterdeep” and “Daggerford” follow the High Road but point in opposite directions. The third, marked “Nightstone,” beckons you to follow the trail. If memory serves, Nightstone is roughly ten miles up the trail.

Also included in the purchase of this adventure is a version specially converted for use with the Fantasy Grounds virtual tabletop software. The converted adventure features all the text and maps from the original adventure along with cross-linking of monsters, spells, magic items, equipment, and story elements, plus the powerful rules automation for which Fantasy Grounds is known.

We (Wizards) recognize that some of the legacy content available on this website does not reflect the values of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise today. Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice that were commonplace in American society at that time. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. This content is presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. This was a couple of great little encounters that we enjoyed. I had a couple of notes (mild spoilers). 1. The village seemed a little anemic with only 8 residences and none of them belonged to the keep guards and no lodgings for the guards in the keep. I have to believe some of the guards would have families. I added some additional residences to account for this. 2. Kella Darkhope should have a note of her action if attacked by the PCs. I don't mind RPing her with my own interpretation, but for a beginner DM, a small note would help guide the encounter.

One of the first adventures I ever played or DM’d, so it has a special place in my heart. I’ve done it several times now and feel like it has a very classic DnD feel- adventurers arrive in town to find it ransacked by goblins. There’s plenty of combat, exploration, and social interaction included. Now, if only I can get a group to stick around long enough to play the rest of SKT

This is chapter 1 to the Wizard's of the Coast official Level 1-11 adventure Storm King's thunder. This chapter will get you from level 1-5. But TBH you could jump into the campaign at level 5 and not miss much, chapter 1 is probably the most lack luster part of this great adventure. But all the same this is a great FAST way to get your players to level 5 and it is over all well put together. This chapter is all about goblins, the zentarum, the lord's alliance, some ogres, a Wizard Giant, it works to get you into a world where a civil war amongst the races of giants nearly destroys all the small folk under foot

"A Great Upheaval" is simply Chapter 1 of the StormKing's Thunder campaign. The first chapter is made free as a pdf, but for the rest you have to buy the module (as a book, on D&D Beyond, on Roll20, or on Fantasy Grounds). They did similar things with the introductory adventures to Curse of Strahd and Hoard of the Dragon Queen.

This adventure has been a lot of fun for my tier one players. There is a little bit of everything here for everyone. Lots of fighting, some puzzle solving and a bit of treasure. It is a great introduction to the rest of Storm Kings Thunder.

Does this count as a legal Adventurers League adventure?

I really enjoyed this opening adventure for STK. There was plenty of opportunity for whatever play style you enjoy. From Roleplay to dungeon crawl to saving a village. Add in meeting your first giant to set the theme for the rest of the season you can't go wrong with opening with this adventure.

This is a pretty good adventure if you want to get your players leveled up quickly for an upcoming campaign. The story line is pretty decent, though it falls flat against many of the others I have played, and there's not nearly as much room for creativity on the DM's part. Personally, I'd go for Sunless Citadel and Forge of Fury if you want to quickly level the players up. That said, it is still great fun and the players enjoy it. Not bad overall.

I would say I am a fan of this module. It is a great way to get players to high levels in no time. For my group, who went through everything on the map, it took us about 8 hours. However, for a more efficient group not trying to loot everything, it could easily take 4. Nothing too exciting story wise in the first half, its your basic save the village. The section with the cloud giant is very interesting and opens up a great amount of the story to be expanded upon in storm king's thunder. It's a very good introductory mod, I recommend it for power levelers and beginners

Kinda surprised they still haven't fixed the spelling in the listing title.

A decent adventure. Run if you want to get your players to 5th level in 3, 4 hour sessions. All in all a rather standard adventure with no curveballs or anything special.

I purchased the Storms Thunder book, is this just the first chapter from that book? Or is this a separate adventure?

Thanks for this. Will there be player versions of the maps? The included maps have the encounter numbers, etc...

I moved the .mod file to another directory and just tried to move it again. Now it won't let me move it or delete it and it says that I don't have permission to do so. Is this something anyone else has come across yet?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
