Goblin Ambush: A nasty little encounter designed by evil little minds

ADD TO WISHLIST >

This is a difficult encounter for PCs level 3-4. The Goblins adversaries have built an ambush that allows them to surprise stronger opponents and deal with more physically powerful enemies. They used nothing that they could not carry with them, and nothing that they could not afford to abandon. With shovels, hammers, rope, axes, a few small trees, and about 6 hours of work, they have made themselves into a serious threat.

In repsonse to community feedback, a new section has been added containing goblin translations of threats, shouts of panic, and pleas for mercy. More details about motivation and possible actions have also been added.

Should the XP calculation for this not use the "Encounter multipliers" from the DMG p.82?
Creature total = 800 XP, and since there are 12 enemies, multiplied by 3 for 2400 XP?
According to the "XP thresholds by character level" on the same page, that's 400 XP above deadly for 4 PCs of level 4.

You are right. This is one of the first adventures that I wrote, and I had not described everything the way I should, nor thought out the positioning and number of adversaries as completely as I would have liked. There should be fewer goblins. Would it work if the ones manning the horse-breakers were excluded, and the hiding goblins had to run into position to use the traps? The goblin boss could also be safely excluded from the encounter.

If anyone would like to see the adventure stubs developed, let me know. This is something that I would like to work on.

I'd like to see it. I think it could make for an interesting challenge for PCs, especially if it isn't just a room-by-room cavern crawl! Good work on this ambush scenario. I'll write a

Do you want to go into town after the merchant syndicate supporting the ambushers, or towards the goblin lair to rescue the mage?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
