Ravenloft Archetypes II: The Core Domains Adventurer’s Guide aims to do everything for Ravenloft that the Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide did for the Forgotten Realms, providing all the setting, story, and character options needed to portray brave adventurers facing ultimate evil in D&D's classic Gothic setting of high adventure-- including 20* new class archetypes, 13* new subraces/race variants, a new class, a new race, 56* new spells, new feats, new magic items, and detailed descriptions for Domains of Dread beyond the borders of Barovia. Click the preview to see the whole table of contents and more!

The current price includes all the added bonus content as well as all new content to come! This living document will continue to grow and improve based on your feedback, and has just added new race options as a thank you for bringing us to the Platinum sales level!

  • New Class Archetypes include: Barbarians whose rage is not merely primal instinct, but the unleashing of a dark alter ego; warlocks who weave eldritch cloaks of primordial gloom; druids who summon ancestral spirits and allow them to possess their flesh; clerics of hunting goddsses and gods as well-known for their bow-arms as their healing hands; paladins who swear an Oath of Defiance, waging shadowy private wars against tyranny; and rangers who rise up from black lagoons and cyclopean depths to bring nature's fury to their enemies; and many more.
  • New Race Options include: Tieflings tainted by Domains of Dread rather than fires of Hell; wild halflings made savage by apocalyptic wastelands; the half-orc-like calibans, born of humans but twisted by a fell curse; humans forever marked by their bloodlines and upbringing; and many more.
  • New Spells include: Cantrips that defy the law of gravity; divinations that extract omens of danger from the fragments of corpses; transmutations that unlesh your inner beast; enchantments that infect another's mind with your darkest thoughts; and more.
  • Dread Domains described in detail include: The fey-haunted realm of Tepest, caught up in witch-hunting hysteria; Lamordia, a godless land of mad science and living constructs; the lying dreams of an infamous death knight transformed into a waking nightmare of relentless truth in Sithicus; and many more.
  • New feats, revealed secret societies, unearthly faiths and cults, additional lore and history of Strahd's domain of Barovia, an overview of Ravenloft and the Dark Powers who rule it, magic items, and a completely new class-- the Metaphysician.

Ravenloft Archetypes II: The Core Domains Adventurer’s Guide  provides a broad look at the continent called the Core (which includes Barovia and the most classic domains), along with a general overview of the entire setting, a primer on the nature  and metaphysical rules of all the Domains of Dread, details on history and religion along with a special section for using this document with Curse of Strahd, a curated gazetteer of the Core as a region, with special emphasis on 12* of its domains (including Barovia), specifics on how the D&D races and classes fit into Ravenloft,  all the rules necessary to portray members of eight conspiring secret societies, and even a warped new take on familiars.

* = These numbers have gone up since the game was first released, as new content was added to this living document that will grow as new sales levels are achieved.

A content-packed resource for players and DM's alike, Ravenloft Archetypes II: The Core Domains Adventurer’s Guide is a must-have for campaigns set in Barovia or any of the other Dread Domains of Ravenloft, and a sinister treasure trove of darkly unique characters, setting information, secret societies, and magic for any D&D 5th Edition game.

CHANGE LOG

Ver1.4: Add new Fighter archetype (the Lamplighter) and re-distilled PDF of printer-friendly version to resolve downloading error.

Ver1.3: Added 5 new variant options for humans (since Ravenloft is such a human-dominated setting) based on humans shaped by their history and ancestry; and addressed various typos.

Ver1.2: Added 12 pages of new content including new domain info, 2 new archetypes, a new fighting style, and new equipment (see the new Appendix B, at the end). Also corrected numerous typos and unclear bits of text, added 6 new spells (including the two previously missing that were referred to under the Way of the Five Deadly Venoms monk) and used playtest input and customer feedback on social media to adjust the Circle of Spirits druid and Hunting domain cleric.

Download Note: Now includes a printer-friendly version, as well as the regular, full-color file optimized for on-screen viewing.

You can use this in a 5th edition DnD game right?

Absolutely! That's what it is for! For 2nd and 3rd editions, you can just use the awesome Ravenloft books they published during those days.

This excellent! Especially with the lore and guide to The Domains of Dread.

However, a lot of the variant features seem way too overpowered. Like the human variants where they still get a feat and all this other stuff. The Water Domain is also a good example. You trade Heavy Armor Proficiency for Proficiency with 3 weapons, you get 2 cantrips, and a language. Doesn't seem very balanced to me.

Not trying to disagree with your opinion, which I am grateful you shared, but I think there has been a misunderstanding. The human variants here DO NOT get a feat, at least not as intended. Which part of the text gave you the impression that the human variants also receive an extra feat? I actually think the armor proficiency trade balances out, since the weapons and cantrips given are very specific and not overpowered, but the opinion of another DM may vary. I am happy to discuss your critique further if you provide a bit more detail.

The 1.4 printer-friendly version isn't openable in Preview for me (I'm using a Mac), but the 1.3 default version and Lamplighter PDFs work fine. I see you're aware of an issue having been present, but just letting you know that something's still wonky.

So, the printer friendly version is the one that *doesn't* work? Oh man, that's supposed to be the one that was fixed... Thanks for the update, I will take another look at this.

Sorry for the delay, convention season had me offline for a while, and it took me a while to address this issue. I ended up having to change the software I use to make PDFs! Hopefully, I have solved the problem now, please try downloading the printer friendly version. If the fix works, I will upload a new version of the full-color PDF as well. As I thank you for your patience while I worked on this, I have added a new Fighter archetype, the Lamplighter, which will feature in a future product. Please let me know if this works!

Hi,Great book well worth the money, thanks.I have a few questions tho.Does the ''Savant'' gets the initial 4 cantrips as well as the two 1st level spells from the regular metaphysician progression, before using its intellect dice progression starting at 2nd level? If yes,do they add up with the cantrips gave with the narrowly focused spells skill? Also is the magisteria available to any metaphysician? And finally, there's something called recovery trance(page 101),it does not say at which level you get it?Again great work, thanks.BTW is this an updated version of the 1st book,or they are both totally diffrent books?Peace!
Customer avatar
Jeremy F January 25, 2017 9:39 pm UTC
CREATOR
Yes, the Savant gets all those cantrips. Yes, they also get the narrowly focused spells. The magisteria are only available to Metaphysicians of the Mentalist archetype (other archetypes receive additional spells from their features). The recovery trance is gained at 11th level, apologies for the typo! Finally, this is a separate sequel to the first Ravenloft Archetypes, with lots of new and different information. Together, the two give you a lot of content for your game!

All the lore and in-world information can, including the extensive details about Barovia and Dusk Elves for AL Season 4. All of that is based on D&D canon for Ravenloft. However, none of the archetypes, feats, spells, or new classes or races are legal, as those are game mechanics. No game mechanics from non-WotC products are usable in AL.

I am unable to replicate your error. I receive no message about a corrupted PDF. As for the printer friendly version, the book is 170 pages long, and still includes black and white art even in PDF, so yes, it is still a big file. Is there some other way I can help?

Hi, great work and I really like your file for use in my Curse of Strahd campaign. The Realmbound Tyrant Pact warlock in my group has the spell "Alienated Mind". It has a range of 300 ft. but an effect that is a "15-foot sphere originating from you." Can you please clarify what the relevance of the 300 ft. range is? It seems to me that the Range should actually be "Self (15-foot-radius sphere)" Thanks in advance for your response!

I think the 300 ft. range is an error, as you suspected. Thank you for catching that, I will look at updating the spell in the next revision.

Hi I don't know if it's just because it isn't created yet but the Archetype feature for the metaphyscian lists the materialist as an archetype but i can't find it. Is the materialist related to the magesteria? Because the magesteria don't seem like full archetypes on their own like they are missing something.

Oh man, I thought I fixed that typo! The materialist was in an early draft of the class, but was absorbed into the Savant. Sorry for the confusion. If this product reaches the Platinum sales level, I will be doing another update, and I will fix that typo while adding the new content!

Well than if the Materialist isn't there what archetype is the Magesteria (I.E Pyrokineticist) contained under or is the Magesteria for all metaphysicians except the Savant?
Customer avatar
Jeremy F August 23, 2016 5:05 am UTC
CREATOR
Of the Metaphysician archetypes, only the Mentalist archetype uses the Magisteria (although you can gain some of a Magisterium's spells from the Focused Psychic Talent feat). Apologies if the text is unclear, I will take a look at revising it.

Can a monk that's multiclassed into Shadowcursed barbarian make their unarmed strike their shadowcursed weapon, or is that violating RAW?
Customer avatar
Jeremy F July 16, 2016 5:06 pm UTC
CREATOR
That is a DM call, but it wouldn't break the game in any way. If it were my campaign, I would let a multiclass monk do this, but I would still have the shadowcursed weapon be some kind of object-- a guantlet, a glove, a bracer-- that they wore while making unarmed strikes. That is just for the story flavor of the archetype, however, in terms of shunting the evil inside yourself into a separate object. Like I said, though, up to the DM.

Thanks to everyone who took this to the Electrum sales level! I just raised the price a little, but added lots of new content (2 new archetypes, 6 spells, a new fighting style, and new equipment) that everyone who bought at the early intro price gets for no added cost. If we hit Gold, I will add even more, and those who purchased early get it all for the same low price. Thanks again to everyone who purchased, and especially those who offered extra input here or on social media-- your guidance will help this product to improve.

Interesting product. I don't necessarily like all choices but never-the-less for those uninitiated to Ravenloft, this is a good start along with other products that expand the D&D next rules for Ravenloft.

I also liked the art. If I may ask, which parts are public domain?
Customer avatar
Jeremy F June 29, 2016 4:49 am UTC
CREATOR
The majority of the art is public domain, almost all from the public domain sources mentioned on the end credits page (specifically the generous releases of art from Sine Nomine Publishing). Non-painted line art is almost all public domain. Most of the art not called out specifically in the credits is either public domain or came from one of the free WotC art collections on this site.

I'd be interested to hear what choices you would've made differently. As it says, I tried to make this the Ravenloft equivalent of the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide, and hope I at least came close.

Thank you very much, haven't checked the credits! The differences are personal taste. I haven't found (from a fast reading) much that seemed "Wrong" (fantasy world). What I consider "meh" others may like. What I consider unbalanced, others may like consider OK.
As such, I won't leave comments that made dissuade people from getting this nice product at such a nice price because of personal taste. I'm a loooong time Ravenloft fan and I have the sources of the "fluff" used in this product. Some things I approach differently; again, it's a fantasy world.

Thank you for the reply.

Apologies! Those spells appeared in the sidebar of a domain section that was cut early on. They will be added in a future revision, for now, here they are:

Lesser Acupuncture
Necromancy cantrip
Casting Time: 1 minute
Range: Touch
Components: S, M (acupuncturist’s needles)
Duration: Instantaneous
Inserting needles into precise centers of ki in the body, you energize a creature’s natural healing abilities. The creature may spend 1 Hit Die, and it can roll 1d4 and add the result to any Constitution saving throws it makes before the end of its next turn. Once a creature benefits from this cantrip, it cannot be cast on them again until they finish a short or long rest. As you gain levels, the number of Hit Dice the affected creature can spend increases. When you reach 5th level, the creature can spend up to 2 Hit Dice, when you are 11th level they may spend up to 3, and when you are 17th level they may spend up to 4. This spell has no effect on undead or constructs....See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
