"Dead of Winter" is a 1st-level adventure

which can easily be adjusted to any level

It is designed as a side quest for Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition

(but could be converted to other editions with very little effort).

As the adventurers are traveling a lengthy road between destinations, a bitter winter storm blows in. Lucky for them, there is a small roadside hamlet just ahead, where the party can take refuge from the harsh elements. The mood in the local tavern is grave, as this is a sad night for the villagers. It is the first anniversary of the murder of a town hero; A murder that was never resolved.

Strange events begin as soon as the adventurers arrive and will lead them to clues which just may solve a year old murder and lay an anguished soul to rest.

This adventure is a side quest that can be run in a 2 - 4 hour session.

Hey, Patrick. Not sure if you follow this but I don't know how else to contact you. I wanted to let you know I converted Dead of Winter into Fantasy Grounds and I will be running it tonight, May 22nd at 6:30 pm MST on my twitch channel https://www.twitch.tv/gwydione. Stop on in if you want to watch it live! I'm running a number of players brand new to fantasy grounds through it. Seems like a cool short adventure to get new players familiar with fantasy grounds. Looking forward to it!

Excellent! It was a ton of fun! Anyone considering purchasing the module (which I think is well worth the price), feel free to check out a youtube video of the session I ran. Keep in mind the maps are mostly maps I own with the exception of the Winter Oak map which came with the module. It was great fun to run and easy to adjust the difficulty up or down as you'd like. I added a few encounters for my group. Here is a link to the youtube video of me running some players new to fantasy grounds through the module. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEg-yun3zjA&t=1960s

I originally did not plan to, due to being a side quest in a generic village, but I have been tossing around the idea. I think, I just might.

He is a warlock of whatever level you need him to be in order to best challenge your group's level. Basically just roll up a NPC of the appropriate challenge level.

WARNING Spoilers:
I edited the adventure to make it easier to get to Sherlyn's farmhouse. The dove now lures PCs there 1st instead of the barn. After 4 playtests with 4 different DMs, I realized the players did not opt to check out the farmhouse in any of the playtests. It still works, but the players were missing some information (such as the love letters) as well as the encounter with Sherlyn's restless spirit. The adventure now seems to flow much better as I originally intended it to! Thanks, Patrick E. Pullen

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
