The Visionary class

"Visionaries are seekers of the truth, looking out into the cosmos in the hope of finding glimpses of the future. They devote their lives to the pursuit of hidden knowledge, to finding that which has been lost, and to uncovering the truths hidden by the passage of the ages. Through the magic of visions, dreams and the stars, the visionary seeks to perceive what is to come, and even to manipulate the future they see."

For those who seek the path of the oracle, seer, or sooth-sayer, there is the Visionary class. Devoted to the discovery of new knowledge, these Visionaries seek to discover the secrets hidden from our eyes by the passage of time, peering into the future to discern what is to come.

The Visionary class focusses on exploration, role-played interactions, and problem-solving, although it is not deficient in combat. As a Visionary, you will be able to choose one of three Visionary disciplines:

  • The Astrologer: Your search for hidden knowledge has lead you to contemplation of the stars and the heavenly bodies. You determine the nature of events to come through calculation and study.
  • The War-seer: You find that the greatest mystery in this world is the mystery of battle. You grow to master the art of foreseeing your opponent's actions through specialised use of the Premonition feature, eventually even learning to slow or hasten time itself.
  • The Dreamer: You seek the ultimate truth in the mysterious and hidden world of dreams. Your abilities are more intermittent, but they can reveal even the deepest secrets of this world.

Update: v2.0 (awaiting full playtest)

  • Removed spellcasting feature to offer a distinctly different class flavour and further differentiate this class from potential Wizard builds.
  • Minor corrections to Stargazer, Night Life, and Dreamless Clarity features.
  • Spirit of Battle feature reworked to moderate "hurry time" effect.
  • Astrologer 13th and 17th level features majorly overhauled to limit the preparation demand on DMs. Draw Horoscope replaced with a less flavourful but also less demanding Patterened Mind feature. Secrets of the Cosmos tied to use of spells.
  • Dreamer 6th, 13th and 17th level features significantly altered to limit demand on DMs. Vision feature tied to ability checks and proficiencies. Dream Trance feature tied to specific spells. Superior Vision replaced with more flavourful Dreamwalker feature.

This seems mildly overpowered from a DM standpoint. I'm concerned about the ability for a Visionary to be able to understand or know hidden things. That's part of my power as a DM. Other than that this class is fantastic and I will do some experimenting with it and hopefully come back with more constructive information in the future

Thank you, I obviously appreciate any and all feedback you can offer.

I can see your concern when it comes to understanding hidden things. I have attempted with each of the Visionary features to keep it within the bounds of what could be uncovered by some other feature or divination spell (such as Augury, Commune, Contact Other Plane, or the Cleric Knowledge domain features), whilst still offering new and interesting ways of accessing this knowledge.

If you can pick out any particular aspects or features which seem distinctly overpowered when compared to existing Divination magic, then please do mention them, and I will attempt to either weaken or readjust those features to maintain balance relative to other classes.

Thank you again for your feedback.

My apologies for the delay. I have now completed a new version of the class which hopefully helps to lessen the loss of DM control over this character, as well as giving it something more of its own flavour.

I hope you like this newer version, and obviously I would appreciate any further feedback.

If you wish to receive the updated version, then yes, a further download will be necessary. However, you should *not* have to pay to do so. If you go to "My Library", a secondary download should appear under the "Updated Only" section - this should be the current version.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
