Alchemy: Defined, Refined, and Usable

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Alchemy is the most arcane of traditions, from the study of the fire to the creation of gold it all begins in the labs of the alchemist. The creation of elixirs is only beginning when a character starts down the path of alchemy. Alchemists can create unheard of materials stronger than steel, oils that alter the fabric of reality, and mundane items with quasi magical properties.

With 46 new alchemical creations, and 26 pages of explicit rules for crafting new inventions; this is the ultimate authority on the Alchemy Proficiency. This is an absolute must have for any player who wishes to use the skill and any DM who wants to see his villains do more than swing a sword or cast a spell.

Worried about the dollar, see Herbalism: Defined, Refined, and Usable.....YOU WILL BE BACK!

Hi Chris, great guides thanks so much. I have purchased alchemy, skills, herbalism and potions. Are all rules sets designed to be used together or is it a pick one thing?

Hey there! I made a review, but I don't exactly know how to send you my email or respond to your comment. I would love to receive more of your content! My email is noahalanbenedict@yahoo.com. I'm not picky when it comes to what you have, so anything you're willing to send is fine for me! Again, thank you for your Alchemy content, it's gonna help so much to have more comprehensive rules.

Chris, I bought the Alchemy, Potioneering, Herbalism, and Blacksmithing products you created and really like them. However, I noticed some inconsistencies between the products. Common ingredients have an average cost of 4gp per ounce in Alchemy and 2gp per ounce in Herbalism, while Potioneering doesn't have an ingredient cost list. Uncommon, rare, and special ingredient prices also varied between the different products. When I calculated the cost to create a Potion of Healing using the average cost per ounce prices, it had a different creation cost depending on which skill/tool I was using. Specifically, it cost 36gp to create using Alchemy, 20gp using Herbalism, and according to Potioneering it costs 50gp to create. Which one is correct?

Jeramie, thanks I am glad the product is working for you and hope it expands your game. Yes, there is a difference in cost dependent upon the kit and skill used. The herbalism does not offer an exact price for ingredients, whereas alchemy offers exact prices; the average cost is different because the list for alchemy subsumes herbalism's ingredients and adds many more ingredients and most of the added ingredients are of higher value which are preset and this alters the average value. In the case of potioneering, the difference is the ingredient is primarily the spell and the cost of magic item creation is set by the DMG; as such I cannot alter the price. In a gaming frame, think of it as skill/tool set has a different method of crafting and thus has a different cost, akin to spells like "Light" which are functionally the same but cast differently by wizards and clerics. All that being said, you are a gamer after my own heart and if you give me an address, I will send complimentary copies of my other...See more

Chris, thanks for getting back to me so quickly! Ok, I see what you are saying. I took another look and it does look like specific ingredients have the same cost regardless of skill/tool used. Strawberries and athelas, for example, cost 2gp per ounce in both Alchemy and Herbalism, and bananas cost 4gp per ounce, with the inclusion of a price for Balm of Gilead in Alchemy it actually brings the ingredient cost for a common healing concoction (balm or elixir) to the same total. We'll use the exact ingredient prices out of Alchemy for creating items, regardless of specialty, and use the creation rules in each specialty for the actual process of crafting the items. Thanks, again, for taking the time to create such a great product!

Thanks for the offer to send me the other products. That would be fantastic! Unfortunately, I don't see a way to send you a private message with my contact information. Am I missing something?

Chase I have had this issue with products I have purchased as well, sometimes I have had click the upper right hand button for "Account" and use the button for "All products awaiting review" to write a review. I hope you are able to post a review and that it is positive, thank you for your purchase and I hope this product was able to expand your game and give you new options in crafting.

Confused a bit... For example: item - Mother of Pearl, White: W/R; Abjuration, Charisma, Energy

What is the W/R since this is a Charisma thing, not wisdom. I am seeing this a lot, so is there a fixed update?

W/R, (Water/Rare), this denotes the elemental affiliation and the rarity level of the ingredient; this designation does not in any way reflect the sphere of influence the ingredient is associated with for the crafting process.

Awesome! I am stoked to be a part of your game, knowing that players out there use it is a good feeling. I really think that the two match up perfectly and possibly overlap in a few places. You will not be disappointed I assure you.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
