Faction Folio: Waterdeep - Dungeon Master's City Guide

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Waterdeep, City of Splendors and Crown of the North! This iconic city is perhaps the most influential in all of Faerun. It has been a rough century, but she is quickly regaining her former glory.  What better place for your characters to call home?

Faction Folio: Waterdeep – Dungeon Master’s City Guide is a resource to help you bring this magnificent city to life. This guide describes seventeen NPCs including a friendly Thayan with revenge on his mind, a blind pirate with a secret, a rising gnome merchant queen, and an old crone in the darkest depths of the Downshadow.  Characters can visit more than forty locations, including a high-end private social club that fronts as a time travel gift shop, a bustling casino with a giant silver hippopotamus statue, or a quiet temple to Chauntea in an outlying farming village. Explore more than twenty rumors, ranging from an information-broker allied to the Lord’s alliance, a Calishite thieves’ guild operating out of Little Marekh, or a shadowy bazar that sells all manner of things for a favor or a piece of your soul.

This guide contains:

  • Simple suggestions for running a vibrant and complex city.
  • Brief overviews of Waterdeep’s Wards (Field, Sea, North, Castle, City of the Dead, Trade, Dock, South, Downshadow, Undercliff, and the Rat Hills).
  • Rumors, random encounter tables, and locations for each Ward.
  • Descriptions of NPCs representing all five major and a few minor factions.
  • Suggestions for using a Tarokka deck for fortune telling.
  • Organizers to help connect player characters to each other and to NPC contacts
  • A Player’s City Guide that removes the Dungeon Master’s secrets.

Author's Note: The structure of Waterdeep in this guide is based on previously published materials.  However, the vast majority of locations and NPCs in this document are unique, so you do not need to worry about causing conflicts with future official products.

Really love this content, thanks so much. One question, there are references to player archtype stats and some modifiers, where do these stat blocks come from?

The bolded "archetypes" refer to either a creature or NPC in the monster manual.

I started reading Greenwood's Death Masks. He burned down the Field Ward -- If you are using my "book," just move the stuff in the Field Ward to Undercliff. The two wards have a similar feel.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
