Layout Elements: Bleak Blue

ADD TO WISHLIST >

UPDATE:  Now there are new PNG versions of the files as well as the origninal JPG versions!  Two file formats for the price of one!

We've seen the layout of our favorite RPG products for years--wonderful content arranged in visually intriguing pages, often emulating worn pages or maps, and sometimes having a "torn paper" or stained look.  But unless your a graphic designer or expert layout person, it can sometimes be hard to make your material look like the polished work of the professionals.  These images are meant to help bridge that gap.  This collection of 22 stained and painted pages are intended to be used as background images when formatting the layout of your material.  They are not a substitute for illustration which is often visually substantive and delivers information to the reader in a visual form.  These pages are instead meant to emulate those pages that don't have beautifully illustrative materials on them (which, if you check carefully in your favorite RPG products, is usually the majority of the pages...).

These paint strokes done in deep slate blue, charcoal black, and dusty grey are meant to break up the visual fatigue that can accompany reading long pages of blocky text.  Sometimes a larger header or a section of boxed text simply won't do it, but you can't afford the material-specific illustrative art that would ideally do the job.  Think about how you might use these options instead.  Beautiful and simple blue lines frame the outer and lower edges of the pages, and painterly stains and brush strokes embellish the corners, sides or top depending on the page.  The collection also includes two basic images of pages that don't have any paint strokes on them, and it's highly encouraged that those two images be used repetitively with the more artisitic pages inserted sparingly.

These images can be used in conjuntion with these collections of graphic imagery as they are in a similar style and similar color palette:

Graphic Art Elements I, Graphic Art Elements 2, Graphic Art Elements 3, Graphic Art Elements 4. Find more information at Coreyartus Cartography at https://coreyartuscartography.wordpress.com/.

Each image is Letter-sized, 150dpi.  And as of 9/16/2017, in both jpg and png formats.  In addition to the images, a short guide and layout examples is included to help assist in their use.

Would it be possible to remove the solid color lines from the PNGs? They take away from the look I wish to achieve, so I thought I'd ask. I feel similarly about the other similar products of this type that I've bought.

David--Unfortunately, the original PSD files have been flattened, so I can't go back and remove the lines on any of them. My sincerest apologies. I can suggest, however, that there are many "blot, splatter, swish, grit, and stain" brushes available for Photoshop and various other graphics programs. It can be very easy to create your own papers nowadays, whereas when I originally uploaded these files in 2016 it was a bit more challenging...

Just create a file the size of your paper in a program of your choice (there are several free alternatives nowadays, and even some you can do in browsers without having to download an app at all). Make a layer using a stroke or stamp of your brush in black or your selected color in the corner. Then add an additional layer on top of your previous layer with the layer mode set to "Multiply" and do another stamp/stroke of a different brush in either black or your color. Changing each layer's opacity and lightness/darkness to your tastes, you...See more

I see. Thank you for the advice. I'll do my best to try to make my own as well.

I really liked those! One thing that would be nice is having the stains was smaller transparent images as opposed to full page with horizontal and vertical solid lines. I had to tweak them because of the lines but still, very good :)

Hey, Corey. I've purchased quite a few of these products - I wonder, would it be too much trouble to provide the material in this package as .png format files with transparency, rather than as full pages with lots of white space?

I'm creating pages with some background texture that I'd really like to spiffy up with this material, but I just can't seem to strip out the white space satisfactorily in Photoshop. Any chance you'd be willing to add .png versions of these elements to the product?

Ack, Jeff--this is what happens when one doesn't check in on any discussions for their products... It ends up being a year later before you reply. My sincerest apologies.

Unfortunately, I can't strip out the white as I stupidly built them as JPGs, not PNGs. A lesson learned that I will address if I ever put out more products. In my head, I always thought of them as the sole backgrounds--I'd never imagined them being used over the top of yet another background... My bad.

Again, my sincerest apologies. If there was a way to remove the white neatly and sufficiently (which I don't know how to do either), I'd do it.

JOSEPH (Sorry about calling you the wrong name below), I actually figured it out. Now there are new PNG versions of the images. Sorry it took me so long. I hope they're useful to you somehow! I will be going through all my products and adding PNG versions of the images.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
