Really great one shot. My players and I loved it. I added a few details as well. After they opened the invitation, I said that Elminster was their long lost godfather:

“You recall this name, Elminster, from a long, long time ago. Elminster is your godfather - you think you remember being told that he is a wizard. But you have never met him, you have never been contacted by him before, you haven’t heard his name for years. In times of loneliness in your youth you thought of seeking him out, but had no idea where to start, and eventually any dream you may have had - of seeking out an exotic, wealthy wizard who could have taken you under his wing - faded into the memories of your childhood. You decide to attend this strange party tonight, putting on your finest garments for the occasion.”

I also created a half-written speech hidden on Elminster’s body which revealed that he had actually invited each of the players’ characters to the party because they were his long lost illegitimate...See more

This game was perfect!! I had my players be the NPC: Kira, Diz, Pathos, and another one I added. I tweaked a couple of things, though. For example, I changed the bird's password and got him to tell the players clues in order to guess it.

Also, I was tempted to create clues for the original murder party (Diz and the poison and stuff) but that would have totally confused my players, so I didn't, and it was sooo fun!

Maybe a bizarre question, I'm getting ready to run this a second time and I just realized that there's not clue or indication for the password of the song bird. It gives the password but how would the players know/guess it? Am I missing something

This is why I'm in the comments! Writing the game to play tonight. My answer -
The bird, when picked up, asks for a password and opens a wing to reveal a keypad with number 0-9
The password will be a 4 digit number, a year.
The red herrings..
The players will go in knowing he invented a cure that he gained his fame from in 1266
The will know he was born in 1232
The picture of him and Roger will be dated 1246
Roger will inform the party he last saw him 126e
He moved in with Mrs owlbear in 1241
Hired diz in 1275
The animal statues (bar the chicken) will have a number carved onto the bottom of each.

The real answer... the wizards desk will contain a locker, containing a photo

Sorry pressed send too early!
Contain a locket with a picture of him and kira.
The locket will say 'the time I spent to you was the best of my life.'
Kira will reveal their relationship was in 1250.
Hioe this helps!

What I wonder is what was the plot to the murder mystery the old wizard had originally planned (whodunnit?) and did what kind of clues did he have prepared?

Haha actually now that I read it through more carefully... The original plan was Diz with some poison. But that alone feels a little bit underwhelming for a powerful old wizard to plan.

Just wondering as I'm a newb DM I read tru and the only actual fight is the boss right? Is it possible to make it a low level adventure instead? And for more players?

Was curious about this. From the DMsGuild support FAQ on OGL vs DMs guild publishing:
“Does Wizards own any unique IP that I create in my DMs Guild publications?

“Wizards does not own any of the unique IP that you create in your publications. Wizards does own the IP that they contribute, plus the DMs Guild agreement will grant Wizards and other DMs Guild authors a license to use your IP.

“That said, if your work merits incorporation into canon, Wizards will contact you about purchasing your IP outright.“

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
