Spawning Pool of the Elder Things

Watermarked PDF

SPAWNING POOL OF THE ELDER THINGS is the ultimate random monster creation tool, created specifically for the most recent edition of the world’s first and foremost Fantasy Role-Playing Game (FRPG).

This colossal 780+ page compendium contains the largest, most comprehensive, and most ambitious monster creation system ever devised.  If you feel that your game might be suffering from a lack of variety in monsters and encounters; if you want straightforward help and guidance in refining your own monster concepts; or, if you just want to inject some old school Gygax-inspired, Arnesonian, and Lovecraftian atmosphere into your modern FRPG, then this is the perfect resource for you.  Tap into the chaos, fear and madness of the Elder Things to animate, twitch and galvanize your game!

The SPAWNING POOL is actually a complex set of interrelated monster customization systems.  These systems follow the unifying principle of guided randomness, ensuring that your monster is otherworldly, but also that it makes sense and fits perfectly into your structured game world.  You can selectively pick and choose from the worksheets and various tools provided herein to supplement your own unique method of monster design.  Or, you can enjoy a guided and example-driven mentorship approach, which will lead you through all of the principles of monster creation, encounter development, and campaign integration from beginning to end.

Herein, to assist the harried Game Master (GM), you will find:

  • POWER:  Complete rules for creating any kind of monster (Abomination), from CR 0 to 30.  The variety of the monsters you can create is virtually infinite.
  • OPTIONS:  Over 260 articulated Abomination body types to inspire your brainstorming and the creation of ever more bizarre monstrosities.  Everything from worms to octopi to centaurs is included.
  • ARSENALS:  Nearly 700 unique monster abilities, quirks, and vulnerabilities, arranged into 30 monstrous themes, from Acidic to Water / Aquatic and everything in between.
  • MATRICES:  Interconnected systems to generate monster descriptions, senses, languages, alignment, movement, ability scores, hit points, armor class, and basic and special attacks.  All you need are percentile dice and imagination.
  • CULTISTS AND MADMEN:  Extensive guidelines for monster summoners, binders, worshippers, cultists, and minions.
  • NEW HORIZONS:  Suggested rules for monstrous events including otherworldly rituals, madness, parley, trophy harvesting, adventurer resurrection, and journeys to the campaign-widening Dream Worlds.
  • DARK HUMOR:  A Lovecraftian glossary of over 300 obscure adjectives and evocative terms, hungrily palpitating for your rugose and squamous delectation.
  • LAVISH QUOTES AND ILLUSTRATIONS:  This volume was made to honor and celebrate the golden age of fantasy and weird fiction, and features many quotes from the masters (Dunsany, Lovecraft, Machen, Poe, Verne, Wells, and so forth).  It also feature dozens of haunting masterworks from artists Clarke, Haeckel, and Sime.
  • And much more!

So, I am extremely interested in this product!
I just I have tiny question (I'm very new to the tabletop gaming scene).
Can I only create abominations and such?
Or could I also Create normal things like shaman orcs or lizardman warriors?
Awesome work by the way!

Hi there, welcome to the FRPG tabletop scene :) This product is specifically designed to create entirely new monsters at random, for variety. What you're seeking is probably a common monster templating solution. So far the best thing in 5E that I know of is DMG pp. 273-283. For upgrading humanoids, you can either use the Monsters with Classes guidelines at pg. 283 (adding levels of Fighter to create warriors, or Cleric to create shamans, etc.) and wing it a bit by comparing the various hierarchies of humanoid leaders (pack lords, bosses, etc.) in the MM. Spawning Pool will help you with determining the power level of special monster upgrades (poison, shape-shifting, invisibility, enhanced senses, etc.), but it would really be using a Swiss Army Knife when you just need a scalpel. ;) My book would help you, but there's probably an easier way to get what you're after! ~Kent

Hi there, I've uploaded the worksheets file to the DMsGuild library. It's technically Pay What You Want, but please don't pay for them - they're free.

Please refer to:

Hope that helps!

Wow, at first glance after buying, I'm very impressed and will leave a review as soon as I can read through this massive work. I was wondering if a printed version or better yet a printer friendly version will be done? It might be that I'm getting old or am old, but I prefer a printed copy to reading on the screen. It looks great on the screen as is, so that does not hurt a review, so the other things will only add to your great work.

Hi there Thomas, good to hear from you and I'm glad you're liking what you're seeing so far. I'm still getting accustomed to the DM's Guild interface, but I'll try to print out a printer friendly version later on if I can ... that will probably feature a removed background and pure black and white. May take me a while to figure it out. :)

That would work great. I'm not certain how DMSGuild works for printed version like some on rpgnow, but your product is one I would get a printed copy of in a minute. A black and white, no background version that could be used offline by printing cheaply, sounds good too, and would supplement the great looking version you already have, so either would be great.

Hi there Thomas, a quick follow-up ... I've been researching making a print edition of my book for DMsGuild, and unfortunately it looks like doing so is beyond my technical expertise. (I do have some of my other books as hardcopy print on demand via CreateSpace, but that's a different beast.) I haven't been able to figure out how to create an ebook edition with a removable background either, but you can feel free to e-mail me if you need a more print-ready copy. If something changes in the future and I can figure out a better approach, I will let you know! ~K

Actually, it wasn't as bad on ink as I thought, since I just replaced a printer and just used what was left of the test ink. It printed great on draft mode which helped, and still looked great. Any updates though, would be nice as an errata sheet to cover the updated pdf, so if someone prints it once, they need only print the errata rather than try to find the changes in 600+ pages. Just a thought, since as is, this gets five stars+

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
