A horror-themed side-trek!

A scarecrow in a field can be a little unnerving, but what if the scarecrow is actually a young man close to death? Why has he been left to die, and what dark secrets do the farmlands hold?

This short adventure for 4th-level characters is designed to be used as the party travel through any rural setting, or as a sidequest during Curse of Strahd. It has a running time of 1-2 hours.

Interesting little encounter. Since the author mentions it could be incorporated into Curse of Strahd, I assumed it would be 5e-compatible. But I’m not sure how one would reconcile the setup with 5e rules for vampire spawn creation. 5e rules state that the vampire’s victim must be slain by vampire (specifically, being bitten and reduced to 0 max hit points), then buried in the ground. Only then will the victim rise as a vampire spawn he following night. (And unlike lycanthropy, this is not a curse.)

Can I use this adventure for an episode of my D&D podcast (with proper attribution and links of course)?

Could this be dropped into the Forgotten Realms easily?

Yes, very easily. It's pretty setting-independent.

What party level is this meant for?
I have a group of 6 level 5 players, what this fit into my campaign as a session?

It's meant for 4th level characters. It would probably fit, but level 5 plays a bit differently to level 4, which you may have to take into account.

Quick note: a couple of reviewers have touched on a certain plot point in the adventure, and wondered how it works in Barovia. The explanation can be found on page 26 of Curse of Strahd. Barovians believe a lot of things. Their beliefs doesn't always match reality. (If you don't have Curse of Strahd, it's unlikely the problem will occur to you!)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
