"This module was just great"

"An excellent adventure, full of interesting encounters!"

"I loved running this. It was an absolute blast"

"Everyone loved the adventure... It's a steal at the current price - I'd have easily paid at least $5"

The door slams open so hard that the wall shakes and the hinges groan. To everyone’s astonishment, a goblin staggers in. He is badly wounded, with dried blood covering about half of his body.

Only a moment before the air was full of the rattle of dice, the slap of cards, and cries of victory and defeat. Now the Gambling Golem is dead silent.

The goblin lurches toward your table then collapses right in front of you. “Help me,” he croaks, looking up at you with bloodshot eyes. “I’ll make you rich!”

Tower of the Mad Mage is a 4-6 hour adventure for 1st-2nd level characters. It features magic, mystery and thrilling combat encounters!

Hi,
I've been playing 5e for about 5 years now but have only recently started DMing (I still struggle with balancing combat). My sister in-law is having a board game weekend for her birthday, and I agreed to run a D&D game for board game fans who have never played D&D but want to try it. I brought this based on the great reviews saying it was a perfect into campaign. I read through it, and I already agree! I have now found out that there will probably be 7 players. I've said that this is a bit too many, but everyone's happy to give it a go regardless. I'm thinking of just doubling the enemies where appropriate, and tweaking the difficulty as we go. However I'm not sure how to handle the finale (Giving Talantha a friend seems too harsh, doubling the goblins might make Talantha too easy), and wondered if you had any suggestions for this?

If they are all new players, I wouldn't bother increasing the monster numbers. If you find they are waltzing through the fights, just have every monster do max damage on their attacks.

Hello! I'm getting ready to run this for a group (I must say, it looks absolutely fantastic and I am very excited to run it). But I did have one question, specifically about the encounter with the specter in the 1B room. There is this note in the module: "Note. The specter has been weakened by the close proximity of the chantry. Therefore, it cannot use its life drain ability". This is the only true attack a specter has; does this mean the Specter's main action in combat is to end it's turn in a creatures space to deal the 1d10 force damage to them? I see no other way for the specter to interact with the part (at least violently). Thanks for the clarification!

That was the intention, but I am a bit more gung-ho about monsters these days. I would run the specter at full strength.

Have I really not reviewed this? I *love* this module. It's easy to run and a ton of fun. It's got a great mix of RP, combat, and some things to figure out. Plus, the DM gets to run a dragon in a low-level adventure! I recommend this module on a regular basis.

Do you by chance have the map tiles as separate individual transparent pngs or anything? or at least a version without the letters on it? would be nice to be able to just toss those on as the battle map. I'm trying to set it up in Foundry and that would be a great help! (Awesome adventure btw, perfect little exciting intro)

well if you could it would be much appreciated! I'm using this for my first time DMing and I adore it so far, foundry makes it so much easier but i had to find a random tower image set that kinda matches it to make due.

Such a fun adventure! I ran it with a party of three, but I cut out the "Boar Attack" and "Naked Man" encounters because I thought they were a little too distracting. Instead, I had a pair of rogue goblins from the Deathrot tribe (along with two mercenaries of their own that they recruited) challenge the party on the road to the tower. I did cut out a couple of the rooms in the tower because we were running short on time, but the final encounter at the last room, was so much fun! The players all agreed that the campaign's strength is the fact that there's no clear cut right and wrong when it comes to decision making.

This is a very fun adventure, provides a lot of room for role playing as you have much interaction with goblins, which are fun to role play as NPCs.
The fact that you add a goblin to your party is brilliant. Our party really liked skwelch even though he was giving them hard time. They end up arranging a dual between him and glubnose, helping skwelch to get the upper hand with magic, just to see him claim leadership on what was left of the goblin clan instead of wandering homeless.

As I'm playing with kids, I removed some encounters in the second and third floor, just to get to the really interesting part earlier.

I have bought this module several years ago and have played it several times. It is very enjoyable. I recently created a Fantasy Grounds module using this content with custom maps I created using DPS. Please let me know what the procedure will be to get permission to publish this on DMSGuild.
Thank You.

Note to readers, I suck at reviewing but its fun adventure.
This is first adventure I DMed for new players to 5th ed. It supposed to be short but there was a lot of room for improvisation and adding random content. It ended being 3 sessions long with all distractions. Tower itself is nicely done, but what made all this really interesting is surrounding area and all the possibilities, knowing lore of region there is a lot to add. Also, Skwelch. He ended up hating LG cleric because he tried to control goblin with order and discipline. I gave him really hard time.
If you want something to start with new players this is very nicely done module and you can add whatever you want here because it is very interesting region. Had a lot of fun, my players had a lot of fun and hope to repeat this again to new group of players.
Thank you.

In the end, what does the constable want to have a chat about? Did I miss something?

My group enjoyed this adventure! Early on, Skwelch ended up getting infected with wererat lycanthropy and I decided to double his max HP for the rest of the adventure and if he ended up as a recurring character in future adventures I would have allowed him to master his curse. Sadly, Talantha reduced him to 0 hp and he rolled a natural 1 on his first death save. My party of 3 level 3 characters managed to kill the dragon in the end though, and they didn't have to split the hoard more than 3 ways! (It was harrowing for a moment though.)

I'm thinking about starting a party with a few of my friends(none of us have played before) and I was wondering if this is a good adventure for first time players and a first time DM?

Hi Logan, many first time DMs have used this adventure and have found it easy to run, so I think its a good bet. My adventure "Temple of the Nightbringers" is another good introduction for first-time DMs, and is probably even easier than this one.

Hello,
I just bought this in a bundle and am getting ready to run a couple of one shots for my group than maybe add some of these in a homebrew. The adventure looks great and the ongoing dragon villain idea is a good idea. The only thing that I am a little concerned about is the loot. Isn't a +2 shield a little powerful for a level 2 PC?

Your adventures really look like a lot of fun I will make sure to leave a rating after I run a couple.

You are right - I put a bit too much loot in those early adventures. I'd nerf it a bit

This one-shot was a great intro to D&D for two new players! We did the whole shebang in 5 hours, and everyone loved the twist at the end. I actually dropped the entire 2nd floor and added more goblin attacks to keep things moving. Lots of fun!

We played this last week and had a blast! Both myself and my adventurers are very new to DnD and this has been a great introduction. The party let an angry Skwelch escape and he might become a steady bad guy. We all had a blast!

Hello - reading through the adventure, I must say I'm very impressed! Sounds like a ton of fun and can't wait to play through it.
I am gonna use it to introduce two new players to DnD. I am also new to DMing and was wondering how to scale it for a party of only two. Should I make them higher level or tone down the monsters? Do you have any advice.

Thank you for making this nice adventure and at such a good price.

Cheers.

Oh, I like that idea, but more work on my part though. You think it would be viable to just bump them up to level 3?

It's really not much work. In fact, I'll do it for you now.

Lise & Dak Wolfmire (mercenaries, brother and sister)

AC 14 (studded leather + shield), HP 11, Attack: Scimitar. +3 to hit, Hit: 4 slashing damage

There you go - that's all you need.

Well, thank you, great! When I said more work, I was thinking RP-wise though. They need some personalities and there will be more dialogue and such. What I'm worried is, that it will drag the adventure out.

Currently running this for my party and they are loving it. However, the group has a paranoid rogue, who decided to make a pile of books (study) and burn them after seeing the one on the desk well they forgot to put the fire out haha.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
