The Dragon Prince

ADD TO WISHLIST >

This is a free one-shot adventure targeted towards new players, reveling in a few D&D cliches, but should also be enjoyable for veterans. Feel free to use and to adapt my work for your own purposes, I only ask you provide feedback so I may improve my work.

Summary:

Cathrax, a red dragon wyrmling, has grown quite ambitious and is seeking to expand the size of his treasure horde. To do so he has decided to lure a few adventurers into his lair in order to kill them and add their equipment to his treasure trove. Being the cunning creature that he is, he plots to attack the small village near his lair to catch the interest of any nearby adventurers, and then lead them a trail to his lair where he can slay them.

Being a prideful creature, Cathrax employs minions to do the work he feel he can’t be bothered to. He currently has a band of kobolds in his employ, whom he controls through fear. He does, however, have a right hand man in Pyjak, the leader of the kobolds. After attacking the village of Foxdale, Cathrax instructs Pyjak to ensure that any adventurers seeking him are to be led to the dragon’s layer, preferably weakened.

Once the players reach Foxdale, they may talk to the local townsfolk and find ways to prepare for the battle to come.

I loved playing this adventure with my 2 PCs (my daughters). I'd like to contribute a map of the dragon's mountain lair. How do I do that?

I figured I'd use the maps DarkWolf S. and Dan A. provided to make my own. It's kinda rough as it's on a whiteboard but it'll get the job done for today's session.

Hello ! I'm thinking of running this adventure for some people coming to D&D and/or tabletop RPG. If so, I'll probably make maps (which I'll share with you all) so I'm wondering : is this really doable in 4 hours ? Seems a bit tight to me from what I'm reading. I'll have only 4 to 6 hours available for my session and it requires to be an OS. Could anyone who has run it enlighten me please ?

My group got halfway through, but that's because they had to make their characters fresh. Actual play-time was probably 3hrs give or take. We stopped right before Attack on Black Mountain and pick up there today. I'll let you know how long it'll take to finish that portion up.

I made these maps for my group. Hope they will help. Btw, they are printer-friendly.

About how many hours is average for this campaign? I'm trying to sort my library of campaigns by whether they're one session or multiple for the people that don't have a consistent schedule or just want to try the game out.

Hey there, I enjoyed running your adventure. I made an interpretation of the lair in Black Mountain for use if anyone would like to use it for their own game https://i.imgur.com/4VrhUpx.jpg
The only room it's missing is the dragon's room which I took in a different direction, but you can easily use the bright cave exit as the entrance to the dragon's lair. I made it with Roll20 as my platform of choice so it is very compatible with that site.

So are the characters to supposed to level up mid-session? Seems like the CR 4 Wyrmling would demolish a group of level 1 heroes...

*Full disclosure, I'm a new DM, so I'm not criticizing... this is a legitimate question.

Hi, your adventure was fun for the first timer players and I see that you don't have a map for the black mountain.
I made this map for my session and I would like to give it to you so I wanna know how could I give this map to you.

Hello, Firstly love the module. Looks amazing.
I was wondering if you'd mind if I adapted it to 3.5 to share with other 3.5 players. I would, of course, make a fairly obvious note that you were the original author and that it was reproduced with permission. Also obviously id not try and claim any form of money on it either.

Does anyone have a map of everything starting with the ogre cave up through the end? I came up with maps of everything else but I'm struggling to visualize that.

My one problem was that the stats for the enemies weren't included in the adventure, I had to refer to the monster manual. I feel that all of the information pertinent to the adventure should be included in it. Other than it was a fun story and my group enjoyed it.

What is the level that the characters are supposed to reach by the end of the adventure XP wise?

By my calculations, there is a total of 6,640 XP for a party of four players. This means if you do everything they should end up with 1,660 XP each. Assuming a party of four players, each starting at level one, the PCs should be level 3, partway to level 4, by the end of the adventure.

600 feet deep seems extraordinary for a lake 1500 feet wide. See this report from Oregon State University (http://oregonstate.edu/instruct/fw456/lecture/pdf/lake_morphometry.pdf) - on page 10:

Relative depth (zᵣ) – ratio of the maximum depth as a percentage of the mean diameter of the lake at the surface
Most lakes have zᵣ of less than 2%
Deep lakes have zᵣ of greater than 4%
Crater Lake has a zᵣ of 7.5%

Your lake has a zᵣ of ~35.45%, assuming 1500 feet is the mean diameter and 600 feet is the max depth. (In the formula on pg. 10, √A₀ = mean diameter)

(50)(600)(√π) = 53173.615527165480818945024500234
53173.615527165480818945024500234/1500 = 35.449077018110320545963349666823

I would suggest, perhaps, making the lake 60 feet deep instead of 600.

That minor detail aside, I like the level of detail you've included, and I can't wait to give this adventure a whirl to kickstart my new 5e campaign!

Thank you for your comment! Now that I think about it, 600 feet is pretty ridiculous. I appreciate you taking the time to point this out to me and I will definitely fix this.

There are a lot of small crater lakes that are much deeper than 60 feet. Still, there's no need to worry so much about real-world nature. This is fantasy, after all!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
