D&D 5e NPC Foe Expansion

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Suggested Price $1.50

Do you pit your party against humanoid opponents and wish you had a wider CR range from which to choose? Or do you dread when your players want to act on some color setting detail you casually mention--like when "resentment of the baron's unjust law" results in the party kicking in the castle door to confront the ruler, and all the book offers you is a CR 1/8 noble?

This booklet provides 30 NPC foes expanded across a wider range of challenge ratings. Now even experienced adventurers can still encounter challenging fights against corrupt noble lords and their elite guards, outlaws and brigand kings, hoods and their ruffian thugs, and other kinds of "arch" spellcasters besides mages.

Update (V.4, 12/21/17): Small corrections to hp of war lord, high lord, and warden; Con of brigand king fixed; removed a few typos throughout.

Update (V.3, 3/16/16): Important correction to Tribal Overlord; minor corrections to text descriptions throughout.

Update (V.2, 3/5/16): Minor but important clarification of Parry-Riposte reaction for the Swordmaster, War Lord, and High Lord.

Hi Scott, I'm working on adding the NPCs from this supplement to the Android app I use for DMing for my own needs. But when the work is complete, would you be interested in the export file for your own use? Or to include for others here on DMSGuild? Or maybe even include as an optional download from within the Android app (if I can convince the developer)? Let me know if any of those options are interesting to you.

Thanks, Nathan

Thanks very much, Nathan, I'm so pleased to learn that you find this document worth putting extra work into. I myself don't use the Android platform, but I'm happy if Android app users can have access to this product. I'm not sure I know how to make the Android file available here, but I'm certainly supportive of your ideas. And it would be fine to have them as a download within the app if the developer wants to make it possible.

That's great to hear. The developer is interested in providing this data as an optional download and including a link back to DMS Guild. Please send me an email and I can show you screenshots of what is built for your approval before publishing. Nathan at melinate NOSPAM dot com. ;)

Thanks,

My thanks to those who have left feedback. Balancing monsters and determining CR can be tricky. I personally have never gotten the number-range approach in the DMG to provide functional outcomes. I also question if all the monsters in the MM necessarily line up with the DMG's system, especially the NPCs. If you compare the durability and damage potential of a nonhumanoid monster of a CR to NPCs listed for that CR, the NPCs typically seem weaker overall.

I'm really sorry that a purchaser nearly had a TPK with some of my NPCs. However, could this have been due to the composition of the party versus particular effects of the NPCs? My approach to designing these NPCs (as with my other expansions) was to start with entries in the MM as points of comparison and then to create a variant--either in between two existing MM entries or scaling up from an existing MM entry. In the end, I still compared new CR 11-12 NPCs to the existing CR 12 NPCs (and sometimes monsters too) to ensure that their HP and damage...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
