Wyrmskull Throne (2e)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The Wyrmskull Throne - the ruling seat of the great dwarven nation of Shanatar - has been lost for five millennia. Now, rumors have surfaced that it has been found, and there are sinister parties that will stop at nothing to claim it. But the path to finding the throne is long and twisted, leading from a small village in the remotest regions of Tethyr to the bottom of the ocean! Those who follow it had best be prepared for the strange and wondrous - as well as enemies on every side - for it is no journey for the faint of heart.

The Wyrmskull Shrone is a companion adventure for the Forgotten Realms accessory Sea of Fallen Stars. It can be played as a stand-alone adventure or with the material presented in that volume.

Product History

"Wyrmskull Throne" (1999), by Steven E. Schend & Thomas M. Reid, is a Forgotten Realms adventure. It was published in September 1999.

Origins: The Fallen Stars Adventure. "Wyrmskull Throne" (1999) is a supplement for Sea of Fallen Stars (1999), published just one month earlier. It also was yet another support supplement for DMGR9: Of Ships and the Sea (1997), the latter-day nautical rules book for AD&D 2e.

Resurrected Races: Dwarves. Somewhat surprisingly, "Wyrmskull Throne" is also one of the major supplements for the dwarves of the Realms, following on FR11: "Dwarves Deep" (1990). That's because the whole adventure is a quest for a dwarven artifact, the eponymous Wyrmskull Throne. So, the adventure has plenty of background on the dwarves and their lost kingdom.

Adventure Tropes. Although the adventure admits that the idea is "much-cliched", the characters begin in a tarvern They're then sent on yet another artifact MacGuffin Quest, as they search for the Throne. Though the adventure is technically an underwater exploration, the mythal of Myth Nantar lets the GM handwave that because it has "many life-supporting functions".

Though there are lots of story-based encounters in "Wyrmskull Throne", the heart of the adventure is a pair of locale-based adventures: a ship delve and a tunnel delve.

The Media Tie-In. Sea of Fallen Stars and "Wyrmskull Throne" were complements to a Realm-shaking event, "The Threat from the Sea". The first book in the trilogy, Rising Tide (1999), appeared around the same time as "Wyrmskull Throne", but all three novels and the short story collected are advertised at the end of the book.

Eras of the Realm: 1370 DR. This is then a followup to "The Threat from the Sea", which is mostly set in 1369 DR.

Exploring the Realms. Early parts of the adventure focus on Tethyr. A small farming village called Torlath is the departure point for the characters, while the lost dwarven kingdom of Shanatar once lay beneath Tethyr (and the nearby realms of Amn and Calimshan).

However, the heart of the adventure takes place in the Sea of Fallen Stars and the realm of Serôs.

Artifacts of Note. This is another adventure from the late 2e period that focuses on an artifact recovery — and another adventure where the artifact was relatively unknown. The Wyrmskull Throne had been briefly mentioned before in "Dwarves Deep". Now, GMs got the full stats for the artifact, which can fly and throw lightning bolts(!).

The Throne makes a major return some years later in Storm King's Thunder (2016), but the modern-day authors seem to have forgotten that it can only be used by members of the Shanat bloodline.

Organizations of Note. Schend and Reid position "Wyrmskull Throne" as a struggle between "power groups" in the Realms. None of them are particularly notable, but it's nonetheless a good example of the importance of organizations in the Realms. The groups featured in "Wyrmskull Throne" are: dwarves of Clan Ghalmrin; the Knights of the Shield; Cowled Wizards of Amn; Dukars of the Nantar Alliance; the Morkoth of Olleth; and the Saratycoron.

About the Creators. Schend wrote numerous Realms supplements in the late '90s, from City of Splendors (1994) to Skullport (1999). Reid worked at TSR, then Wizards of the Coast, from 1991-2001 as a Designer, Editor, Creative Director, and Brand Manager (at various times). This was his only Realms book.

We (Wizards) recognize that some of the legacy content available on this website does not reflect the values of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise today. Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice that were commonplace in American society at that time. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. This content is presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Dungeons & Dragons teaches that diversity is a strength, and we strive to make our D&D products as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This part of our work will never end.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
